Chapter 3

Kieran didn't move closer. That was the first thing I noticed — that he stayed exactly where he was, hands loose at his sides, weight balanced like he was waiting for permission that might never come.

"I need you to hear something before you decide to stand there," I said.

"I'm listening."

"I don't want another bond I have to carry alone." The words came out flatter than I intended, but I didn't soften them. "I spent three years propping up a man who called it partnership while I did the actual work. I slapped him for it. I'm not doing a rerun with better cheekbones."

Something flickered behind his eyes — not hurt, exactly. Recognition, maybe. Like he'd expected worse and was recalibrating in real time.

"If you want to stand near me," I went on, "you make yourself useful. You don't make yourself another weight I have to hold up. I don't have the strength left to hold up anyone else right now. Including myself, some days."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "Understood."

No argument. No wounded pride. No mention of the scent still curling faintly off my skin, or the mark on his own composure that I'd watched crack and reset itself in under a minute. Just that single word, and the stillness that came after it, total and unhurried, like he had all the time in the world to prove it.

It was that — the absence of demand — that made me let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

I told him about the council notice. The suspension. The language too clean to be accidental, the corroboration requirement skipped entirely. He listened without interrupting once, arms crossed, eyes tracking my face the whole time like he was memorizing the shape of my anger.

When I finished, he said only, "I have a Beta who can trace that."

"Good," I said. "Get him."

He left within the hour. I told myself the tight thing in my chest when he walked back into the tree line was relief that he hadn't lingered, not disappointment. I was still telling myself that three hours later when he returned with a lean, sharp-eyed man introduced as Marcus Holt, a laptop bag slung over one shoulder like a soldier's kit.

Marcus didn't waste time on pleasantries. He set up at my mother's kitchen table, fingers moving across the keyboard with the kind of speed that made the whole exercise look less like hacking and more like breathing.

"Packhouse networks leave fingerprints," he said, not looking up. "Router signatures, timestamp patterns. Whoever sent that testimony didn't bother masking the origin point. Either arrogant or rushed."

"Both, knowing her," I said.

It was while Marcus worked that the rest of it came through — not through any device, but through the low murmur of pack gossip that traveled faster than official channels ever could, relayed by a Silverfang courier who'd heard it from a trader who'd heard it from someone crossing Ironveil's border markets that morning.

Greymoor had pulled out.

The alliance I'd spent four months building — territorial concessions negotiated in private, terms I'd deliberately kept off official record because Greymoor's Alpha preferred discretion over paperwork — had collapsed in a single renewal meeting because Callahan hadn't known the terms existed. He'd walked in blind. Greymoor's Alpha, insulted at being treated like a stranger to an agreement he'd personally shaken hands on, had withdrawn on the spot.

I sat very still when I heard it.

Not triumph. I wished it were triumph. What I felt instead was colder — a confirmation of something I'd known for three years and never let myself say out loud, not even to myself. Without me, there was no scaffolding left. Just Callahan, standing in a room, discovering the floor had never actually been there.

The courier said Callahan had told his warriors I must have withheld the terms deliberately. Sabotage, he'd called it. The warriors hadn't argued. They also, apparently, hadn't agreed — several of them, according to the courier, had gone quiet and exchanged looks that Callahan, too busy defending his own competence, never noticed.

There was more. Healer stock — bandages, tonics, the reserve medicinal supplies meant for injured warriors — had started disappearing from the infirmary ledgers, redirected instead toward the Luna's private quarters. Sienna's justification, when questioned, had been soft and reasonable: a Luna's household came first. Dara Voss, the senior healer, had recorded it in her private ledger and said nothing else, because Callahan's Alpha tone had made saying anything else impossible.

And Callahan himself, I learned, had authorized another transfer of pack funds — this one settling the last of Sienna's rogue ex-mate's blood debt. He was calling it generosity. Protection. Proof he was the kind of Alpha worth following.

I pressed my thumbnail hard into my palm and said nothing for a long moment.

"Got something," Marcus said from the table, breaking the silence. "Signal traces back to the packhouse's east router. Same terminal used for two internal transfers this week."

I looked up.

"Show me," I said.
