Chapter 3

I stood in our quarters, my hands trembling as I gathered my courage. The morning light filtered through the windows, casting long shadows across the floor. Grayson had returned from his training session, his aura still carrying traces of Kylee's floral scent.

"We need to talk," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "About Kylee."

Grayson's shoulders tensed. He turned slowly, his eyes narrowing. "What about her?"

"I want you to stop mentoring her." The words hung in the air between us, heavy with meaning.

He laughed—a short, harsh sound that made Luna growl within me. "That's ridiculous. I was assigned to train her by Alpha Marcus himself."

"Then I'll speak to my father," I countered, stepping closer. "There are other wolves who can train her."

"This isn't just about training, Lilith." His voice dropped lower, defensive. "Kylee needs guidance. She shifted late, and she's struggling to find her place."

"And I need my mate!" The words burst from me, raw and desperate. "I need you to look at me the way you used to. I need you to remember our bond."

Something flickered in his eyes—guilt, perhaps, or regret—but it vanished quickly. His aura wavered, revealing the conflict within him.

"I can't just abandon my responsibilities," he said, his tone hardening. "My honor as future Beta means something."

"And what about your honor as my mate?" I whispered.

He looked away, jaw clenched. "This isn't about choosing between you. It's about doing what's right for the pack."

But we both knew the truth. In that moment, he had made his choice.

---

Later that week, dark clouds gathered over Black Moon territory. Thunder rumbled in the distance as pack members assembled for the mandatory monthly run. Rain fell in sheets, soaking through our clothes within minutes.

"Everyone in position!" Alpha Marcus called over the howling wind. "Betas to the front, Deltas behind, Omegas at the rear!"

I stood among the other ranked wolves, my eyes searching for Grayson. He took his place near the Alpha, his powerful form silhouetted against the lightning flashes. Once, he would have looked back for me, made sure I was safe. Now, his gaze swept past me as if I were invisible.

The pack moved as one into the forest, paws splashing through puddles and mud. The rain intensified, turning the ground slick and treacherous. Through the downpour, I kept my eyes fixed on Grayson's silver-gray fur ahead.

That's when I noticed it—the pattern that confirmed my worst fears.

Every few minutes, Grayson would drop back from his position near the Alpha. At first glance, it might seem like he was checking on the younger wolves, but I knew better. Each time, he circled back toward the rear of the formation, where Kylee ran with the other Omegas.

His protective instincts—once reserved for me alone—were now directed entirely toward her.

Luna howled within me, a sound of such anguish that I nearly stumbled. *He doesn't even look back for us anymore.*

---

The pack emerged into a clearing, mud splattering up our legs as we ran. Lightning split the sky above us, illuminating faces tense with exertion and determination. Thunder crashed almost immediately after, shaking the ground beneath our feet.

I couldn't take it anymore—the pain, the betrayal, the endless pretending that our bond could be salvaged.

"STOP!" I shouted, my voice cutting through the storm.

The pack halted abruptly, wolves turning to stare at me in confusion. Alpha Marcus's aura flared with surprise.

"Lilith?" he called over the rain. "What's going on?"

I stepped forward into the center of the clearing, rain plastering my hair to my face. My clothes were soaked through, mud splattered up my legs, but none of that mattered now.

Grayson moved toward me, his expression a mixture of anger and concern. "What are you doing?"

I raised my chin, meeting his gaze directly. The words came from somewhere deep inside me—from Luna, from the Moon Goddess herself.

"I invoke the sacred right of rejection," I declared, my voice carrying above the thunder.

Gasps rippled through the pack. Grayson froze, his aura suddenly unstable.

"I, Lilith Boyd," I continued, each word strengthening my resolve, "reject you, Grayson Phillips, as my fated mate."

The effect was immediate. Grayson's aura crashed around him like a physical force, his wolf howling in shock within him. The mate bond—already weakened—shattered completely with an almost audible crack.

"Lilith, no!" he gasped, reaching for me.

But it was too late. The Moon Goddess had spoken through my cards, through my wolf, through the pain in my heart. And now, I had spoken her will aloud for all to witness.

As lightning flashed again, illuminating the shocked faces of the pack, I saw something I never expected in Grayson's eyes—fear.
