Chapter 5

The message came through mind-link just after dawn. Border patrol, requesting I meet someone at the main gate. I was already dressed, so I went.

Declan stood just inside the threshold, travel-worn and grim. He didn't waste time on greetings.

"Northmoor walked," he said. "Lola tried to renegotiate the trade alliance yesterday. Demanded territorial concessions they couldn't give without losing face. The Alpha left mid-meeting and sent formal disengagement within the hour."

I went still. Northmoor had been one of my longest relationships—three years of careful negotiation, shared meals, remembered birthdays of the Alpha's children. I'd built that alliance on trust, not leverage.

"The winter supply routes," I said quietly.

Declan nodded. "Three border villages. No backup plan. Jude's scrambling, but he doesn't know what you built well enough to fix what she broke."

I took the report from his hands. The paper was official Ironvale correspondence, stamped and sealed. I read it once, then set it face-down on the gate's stone ledge.

"Thank you for bringing this," I said.

Declan studied my face. "You're not going back."

"No."

"Good." He turned to leave, then stopped. "The warriors are asking questions. About why you left. About what he did. It's getting harder for him to control the narrative."

I didn't respond. Declan nodded once and walked back toward the barracks.

I stood at the gate with the report in my hands. Three villages. People I'd worked to protect. Now vulnerable because Lola thought alliances were transactions you could strong-arm.

I wanted to fix it. The instinct was bone-deep, automatic. But it wasn't mine to fix anymore. I'd walked away. This was the cost of that choice—not just for Jude, but for people who'd never poisoned me, never rejected me, who were simply caught in the blast radius.

I folded the report and put it in my pocket. Then I went to the training yard and ran drills until my lungs burned.

---

Two days later, Cillian found me in the strategy room, reviewing border patrol routes. He set a leather folder on the table in front of me without comment.

I opened it. Intelligence reports. Ironvale's internal communications, intercepted through proper Council channels. I scanned the first page, then the second.

Jude's wolf was deteriorating. Visible fur discoloration. Aura fluctuations. Three separate incidents of night howling—the kind that carried through a compound, frayed and diminished. Pack members were documenting it. Some were defecting. Others were just watching and waiting.

"He's dying," I said.

Cillian sat down across from me. "Slowly. Rejecting a true mate has biological consequences. His wolf is starving for a bond that no longer exists."

I closed the folder. My hands were steady. "How long?"

"Months, maybe a year. It depends on how much his body fights it. But he won't recover. The damage is permanent."

I looked at the folder. Inside was a man I'd loved for six years, unraveling in real time. I waited for the satisfaction to hit. It didn't. What I felt instead was something colder and quieter—the specific relief of watching consequences arrive exactly on schedule.

"Lola had the master bedroom repainted," Cillian added. "Twice. Your scent is still in the walls."

I met his eyes. "Good."

He nodded slowly. "The Council is watching. If he continues to decline, they'll move to strip his title before he becomes a liability to the pack's stability."

"How soon?"

"Depends on how fast things fall apart."

I stood and walked to the window. The Blackmere grounds stretched out below, orderly and strong. Everything Ironvale was losing.

"I'm not going back," I said again, quieter this time.

Cillian rose. "I know. But you should know what's happening. You earned that much."

He left the folder on the table and walked out.

I stood at the window for a long time. Then I went back to work.

---

The third message came at dusk. Border patrol again. This time the request was urgent.

I met Declan at the gate. His face was tight, and there was blood on his jacket sleeve—not his.

"Eastern boundary," he said. "Skirmish. Three warriors injured. Lola overreached on territorial claims in a meeting last week, and the neighboring pack decided to test whether Ironvale could back it up."

My chest went cold. "Who?"

He handed me a list. Three names. I knew all of them. Two I'd trained personally—taught them formation defense, patrol rotation, how to read terrain for ambush points.

"They sent word to me before they sent it to Jude," Declan said quietly. "Thought you should know."

I looked at the names. My jaw was tight enough to ache.

"Are they stable?"

"Yes. Healer's got them. But Mia—" He hesitated. "They're asking why you're not there."

I folded the list and put it in my pocket beside the Northmoor report. Two pieces of paper. Two consequences of someone else's arrogance.

"Because I don't belong to Ironvale anymore," I said.

Declan nodded. He didn't argue. He just looked tired.

I watched him walk back toward the barracks, then turned and went to my quarters. I locked the door—then unlocked it immediately, the old reflex I still couldn't break.

I sat on the bed with both reports in my hands. Three injured warriors. Three villages without supply routes. All because Lola thought power was something you performed instead of something you earned.

I wanted to go back. Not to fix it for Jude. Not even to fix it for the pack. But for the people I'd trained, the ones who'd trusted me to teach them how to survive.

I didn't move.

Ghost limped into the room and pressed his nose against my knee. I scratched behind his ears and breathed until the tightness in my chest loosened.

It wasn't mine to fix. I'd made that choice when I walked out. And if warriors were getting hurt because of it—if villages were going hungry—that was on Jude and Lola, not me.

I told myself that three times before I believed it.

Then I lay down and stared at the ceiling until dawn, the two folded reports still in my pocket, the names of three injured warriors burned into my memory like scars I'd carry whether I wanted to or not.

---

The knock came just after sunrise. Sharp, urgent, not Cillian's usual measured rhythm.

I opened the door. A Blackmere runner stood there, breathless, holding a sealed Council summons.

"Tribunal," he said. "Emergency session. They're calling you as a witness."

I took the summons. Broke the seal. Read the first line.

*Formal investigation into Alpha Jude of Ironvale: suppression poisoning, alliance negligence, and failure to maintain pack stability.*

The hearing was scheduled for noon.

I looked up. The runner was still standing there, waiting.

"Tell them I'll be there," I said.

He nodded and left.

I closed the door and leaned against it, the summons still in my hands.

The Council was moving. Faster than Cillian had predicted. Which meant something had happened—something bad enough that they couldn't wait.

I dressed in formal Blackmere colors—dark gray and midnight blue, the ones that marked me as under Lycan protection. I braided my hair back. I did not wear anything that had ever belonged to Ironvale.

When I walked out of my quarters, Cillian was waiting in the hallway.

"Ready?" he asked.

I met his eyes. "Yes."

We walked to the Council hall together. The summons burned in my pocket like a live coal.

By noon, I would be standing in front of the Lycan King, the assembled Alphas, and Jude himself.

And this time, I would not be the one on trial.
