Chapter 5

The rain has soaked through to my skin by the time the porch light comes on.

The door opens. Seraphina steps out in a silk robe the color of poured cream, belt loose at her waist, a glass of red wine held loosely between two fingers. Her hair is dry. Her feet are bare on the porch boards. She looks down at me the way you look at a stain on a rug you have already decided to replace.

"Quinn." She sips. "You'll catch your death."

I keep my hands flat on my thighs. The rain runs down the sides of my face and into the collar of my tunic. My knees have gone past pain into something numb and distant.

"Please," I say. My voice does not sound like mine. "The sanctuary den. Let it stand."

She tilts her head. "The crew has already been paid. Half in advance, as is customary." Another sip. "And in any case, the land sits under Shadowvale's easement rights. It has for forty years. There is no legal argument to be made, if that's what you're kneeling out here rehearsing."

"There are pups there."

"They'll be relocated." She smiles, small and pleasant. "To wherever Omegas go."

I look up at her. Rain catches on my lashes. "Please."

Her expression does not shift. "You're welcome to kneel there all night if you like, Quinn. It won't change anything. Truly." She lifts the wine in a small, almost affectionate salute. "But do consider a hot bath after. You look terrible."

She turns and goes back inside. The door closes with a soft, well-oiled click.

---

I kneel for three more hours.

No one comes. Not Dominic. Not Kasen. Not a single wolf from the pack house I have served for ten years. The rain does not slow. My splinted arm goes numb first, then my legs, then the space between my ribs where my wolf used to answer when I called her.

Somewhere past midnight, something inside me lets go.

It is not a decision. It is not a promise. It is the quiet, physical release of a thing I have been holding without knowing I was holding it—the last belief that love earned through suffering is love at all. That if I bled enough, knelt enough, endured enough, someone would eventually look down and say: yes, you. You are the one we keep.

That thread simply snaps.

I stand up. My knees do not want to hold me. They hold me anyway.

I walk back through the kitchen, past the sink where I scrubbed floors, past the storage room where I slept. I do not sleep. I sit on the cot in wet clothes until the shaking stops, and then I sit longer, and I make a list.

What I have: combat knowledge. Scarred hands. A healer's prognosis folded in my pocket. Four weeks. The silver in my marrow no one knows about but me.

What I am willing to trade: all of it.

Before dawn I go to Maren's door. She opens on the first knock, eyes already awake.

"Be ready," I say. "Move to the sanctuary den permanently within the week. Take the pups. Do not tell anyone."

Her mouth opens. Closes. She nods.

I cross the territorial border into Crescent Throne land at gray light.

---

The sentries find me within the hour. I do not fight them. I let them take my good arm and walk me through the pines toward the border garrison, and I do not look back at Shadowvale even once.

They bring me into a stone hall with high windows and a long table, and Levi is already standing when the door opens.

He sees me and something moves across his face—brief, quickly folded away, but I catch it. Recognition. Not the recognition of an ally noting a familiar name. Older than that. The recognition of a boy who once lay half-dead in a den and looked up at a girl who did not hesitate.

I have not seen him in twelve years. I did not know he was that boy until this moment.

He crosses to me and stops at a careful distance. "Quinn."

"Prince Levi." My voice is thin from the cold. I do not let it shake. "I have a proposal."

He waits.

"Stand me as your chosen mate at the Lycan Court gathering. Publicly. It gives you political leverage against your rival houses." I breathe in. "In exchange, place the sanctuary den in Shadowvale territory under Lycan Crown protection. Untouchable by any Alpha. Permanently."

"Yes."

The word arrives before I have finished my last sentence.

I go still. "You haven't heard the terms of—"

"I don't need to." He pauses. His voice drops, quieter, meant only for me. "I would have protected it for nothing, Quinn. You didn't need to bring me a deal."

I cannot look at him. My throat closes on something that is not gratitude and not grief and not any word I have language for.

I press my thumb into the center of my opposite palm.

His eyes drop to my hand.

He does not move to stop me. He does not name what he has just seen. He only holds my gaze a beat longer, quiet, and steps back to give the sentry orders about dry clothes and a healer, as though the most important sentence in the room has not just been spoken.

---

Two weeks before the ceremony, the doors of the Crescent Throne open on a delegation.

Six wolves in dark formal coats. At their head walks a tall man with pale silver at his temples and a smile that does not touch his eyes. He carries a scroll case sealed with black wax.

Lord Cassian of the Ashveil House.

He crosses the stone floor at an unhurried pace. Every wolf in the court has stopped moving.

He stops before Levi's dais, bows precisely enough to be legal and shallowly enough to be an insult, and breaks the seal on the scroll.

"By right of Ashveil," he says, "and in accordance with the seventh article of Lycan succession law, I formally challenge the claim of Prince Levi of the Crescent Throne to the reigning seat."

His eyes lift. He is not looking at Levi.

He is looking at me.

"On the grounds," he says, "that the Prince has no mate."
