Chapter 1

The familiar scent of pine and wild roses filled my lungs as I crossed the border into Silver Moon territory. Seven years of captivity, three years of struggling to belong again, and now I was finally coming home—if this place could still be called that.

Pack members milled about the grand den's courtyard, their conversations dying as I passed. I kept my chin high despite the weight of their stares. The whispers followed me like shadows.

"There she is..."

"The Alpha's daughter..."

"Poor Lily, having to deal with her again..."

My wolf, Nova, growled inside me. *Ignore them. We know who we are.*

I nodded slightly, acknowledging her strength. Nova had been my only constant companion through everything—the kidnapping, the years away, and the cold homecoming that followed.

The grand den's massive oak doors swung open before I reached them. Lily stood in the doorway, her golden hair catching the afternoon light like a halo. The perfect picture of concern.

"Autumn! We were worried when you didn't answer your phone." Her voice dripped with honey, sweet enough to make my teeth ache.

I forced a smile. "Battery died."

She linked her arm through mine as if we were the closest of sisters. "Well, you're here now. Everyone's waiting."

As we entered the main hall, my father—the Alpha—gave me a distant nod from across the room. No embrace. No words of welcome. Just acknowledgment of my existence.

Lily squeezed my arm, her nails digging slightly into my skin. "Isn't it wonderful? In two days, you'll be mated to Ethan, and our packs will be stronger than ever."

*She's enjoying this,* Nova snarled.

*Of course she is,* I replied silently. *She's been enjoying playing the perfect daughter since I returned.*

---

The formal dinner that night was excruciating. Crystal glasses clinked against fine china as my father discussed border patrols with his Beta. Brandon, my brother, sat beside Lily, both of them the picture of attentive respect.

"To alliances," my father finally said, raising his glass. "And to my daughter's mate ceremony."

The words sounded hollow. Not "beloved daughter" or even "Autumn." Just "my daughter," as if I were a commodity being traded.

I felt Lily's gaze on me from across the table—cold despite her warm smile. When our eyes met, something flickered in hers. Triumph? Pity? I couldn't tell.

"You should smile more," Brandon whispered, leaning toward me. "This alliance with Stone Ridge Pack means everything to Father."

"I'm aware of my duties," I replied, keeping my voice low. "I've been aware since the arrangement was made."

"Then act like it," he hissed. "Ethan deserves a mate who at least pretends to be happy."

I turned to look at my brother—this stranger who shared my blood but had chosen Lily as his sister in all the ways that mattered. "And what do I deserve, Brandon?"

He had no answer for that.

---

The night before my mate ceremony, tradition dictated a pack run. The full moon hung heavy and bright above the forest, calling to our wolves. One by one, pack members shifted and disappeared into the trees, howls of joy echoing through the night.

I chose to drive to the meeting point. My wolf was restless, but I needed the solitude of my car, just a few more minutes to prepare myself for a lifetime with a man I respected but didn't love.

The narrow forest path twisted sharply, moonlight dappling through the trees. My thoughts drifted to tomorrow—to Ethan's formal claiming, to the mark that would bind us forever.

A deer darted across the road.

I swerved instinctively.

Too sharp. Too fast.

My car skidded on loose gravel, tires losing their grip. The world spun in a blur of moonlight and shadows. The sickening crunch of metal against wood. Pain exploded through my body as my head hit the steering wheel.

Then darkness.

---

I woke to the bitter scent of healing herbs and the soft murmur of voices. My head throbbed, and every muscle in my body ached. Healer Maeve's den. I recognized the stone walls and the bundles of dried plants hanging from the ceiling.

"She'll be fine," Maeve was saying somewhere nearby. "The impact was severe, but werewolves heal quickly. She'll need rest."

I kept my eyes closed, not ready to face anyone. Then I heard them—two voices I recognized instantly.

"This changes everything," Ethan's voice, using his Alpha tone. Not for me, never for me.

"We can't tell her yet," Lily's voice, honey-sweet but laced with urgency. "Not before the ceremony."

"My wolf is going crazy, Lily. He recognizes you as my true mate. How am I supposed to mark Autumn tomorrow when every instinct is screaming that it's wrong?"

My blood turned to ice.

"Brandon agrees we need to wait," Lily continued. "The alliance is too important. We'll find another way."

"What about Jackson?" Ethan asked. "Is he on board with the plan?"

"He'll do what Brandon tells him. After the accident, we'll say she needs time to recover. Jackson will pose as her mate until we figure out how to break the news without causing a scandal."

I lay perfectly still as their voices faded down the corridor. My mind raced, piecing together their betrayal. Ethan and Lily were true mates. My brother knew. They had planned to deceive me, to use this accident somehow.

*They think we're weak,* Nova growled. *Show them how wrong they are.*

A plan formed in my mind—desperate, perhaps even cruel, but necessary.

When Maeve returned to check on me, I opened my eyes with deliberate confusion.

"Where..." I whispered, letting fear seep into my voice. "Who am I?"

The healer's eyes widened in alarm.

And so my deception began.
