Chapter 4

The migraine always arrived the same way — not with a bang but with a slow, gathering pressure behind my left eye, like the sky before a storm that never quite broke.

I was already sitting on the edge of the bed when Elijah came upstairs, still in his council shirt, collar open, sleeves rolled to the elbow. He didn't say anything. He just crossed the room and settled behind me, and his hands found my temples the way they always did — certain, unhurried, like a man who has done this ten thousand times and intends to do it ten thousand more.

I closed my eyes.

The pressure of his thumbs moved in slow circles, and I felt the tension start to unspool, vertebra by vertebra, until I was leaning back against his chest and the ache was something I could breathe around instead of something I had to fight.

"Still think it's the light in the studio," I murmured. "I had the north window open too long."

"Mm." His voice was low against my hair. Not agreeing, not disagreeing. Just present.

I turned my head slightly, and he adjusted without being asked. That was the thing about Elijah — he was always a half-step ahead of what I needed, and he never made it feel like a performance. It just felt like gravity. Like the natural order of things.

"Your wolf," he said, after a while, in the quiet voice he used for this particular conversation, the one we had in some version every evening. "She doesn't keep things that don't serve her. Whatever she let go of — she let go of it because she wanted room for something better."

I smiled without opening my eyes. "You've told me that before."

"I'll keep telling you until you stop needing to hear it."

"I don't need to hear it."

"I know," he said. "You just like it."

I laughed, soft, and pressed back against him, and let the dark honey and woodsmoke scent of him settle over me like a second skin. Outside the window, the Silverpine pines were black against a purple sky. Cooper was somewhere downstairs, probably rearranging the couch cushions.

I thought: this is what the Moon Goddess meant. Not the ceremony, not the title, not any of the grand architecture of it. Just this. Just a man's hands at my temples in the dark, and the feeling that the world is exactly the right size.

---

Manhattan was loud and bright and smelled of exhaust and hot pretzels, and I loved it immediately.

Elijah had warned me the summit would be dry — two days of cross-pack protocol and alliance posturing, the kind of thing that required a specific tolerance for men talking in circles about things they'd already decided. He wasn't wrong. But the hotel was beautiful, and I had my sketchbook, and on the second evening we walked six blocks to a restaurant where no one knew what we were and ordered too much pasta and talked about nothing important for two hours.

On the third afternoon, he had a closed session. The kind where mates waited in the hotel bar and pretended not to be bored.

I lasted forty minutes.

"Cooper needs air," I told the Silverpine warrior Elijah had stationed near the elevator, which was technically true — Cooper had been eyeing the revolving door with increasing intensity since breakfast.

"The Prince said—"

"The Prince said the boutique on the next block." I smiled. "I have my phone. I'll be twenty minutes."

The warrior looked uncertain. I was already attaching Cooper's leash.

The afternoon was cool and sharp, the kind of October light that makes everything look slightly more real than usual. I had a coffee in one hand and Cooper's leash in the other, and he was doing his thing where he stopped every four feet to investigate something invisible and deeply important. I let him. We had nowhere to be.

The boutique had a window full of autumn things — amber glass, dried botanicals, a coat I would absolutely not buy and was going to think about for a week. I was standing on the sidewalk looking at it when Cooper's head came up.

He didn't growl. He just went still in that particular way dogs go still when something has changed in the air before the humans catch up.

I felt it a half-second later — a prickling at the back of my neck, the specific sensation of being watched.

I turned.

The man was already crossing the street.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, moving with the fast, locked-in purpose of someone who has stopped thinking and started reacting. His eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that was immediately, viscerally wrong — not the look of someone who recognizes a friend, but the look of someone who has seen a ghost and cannot process the fact that it is standing on a sidewalk holding a coffee cup.

He reached me in three strides.

His hand closed around my wrist.

The grip was hard — not violent, exactly, but the grip of a man who is terrified of letting go — and he bent his head toward mine and made a sound low in his throat, something between a word and a growl, his voice cracking on it.

"You're alive." His breath was ragged. "You're — I can smell you, you're alive, you're my mate, you're my —"

I slapped him.

Clean. Hard. The sound of it cut through the sidewalk noise and Cooper barked once, sharp, planting himself between us.

I stepped back, yanking my wrist free, and looked at this wild-eyed stranger with his red-marked cheek and his shaking hands and his eyes full of something I had absolutely no frame of reference for.

"Security!" My voice came out loud and cold and completely steady. "I need security out here!"

He stared at me.

I stared back.

Nothing. There was nothing in my chest when I looked at him — no recognition, no pull, no ghost of anything. Just the clean, hard certainty that a man I had never seen before in my life had just grabbed me on a public street, and that Elijah was going to hear about this in approximately ninety seconds.
