Chapter 3

The ceiling of the healer's ward was white.

I stared at it for a long time before I understood where I was. The light was soft, the kind that doesn't ask anything of you. Someone had cleaned the blood off my arm and wrapped it in white gauze. The pain was there, but distant, like something happening in another room.

Clara Voss moved around the ward without speaking. That was the first thing I noticed about her—she didn't fill the silence with words. She checked my pulse with cool, careful fingers. She adjusted the IV line. She set a warm blanket over my legs without being asked. Her eyes were red at the corners, and she didn't try to hide it, but she didn't explain it either.

I appreciated that.

In the bed beside mine, separated by a narrow strip of floor, Grandpa Memphis lay with his eyes closed and his chest rising slow and steady. The silver wolf pin was still on his lapel. Someone had straightened it.

I pressed my thumb to the inside of my wrist.

Then I stopped. I lowered my hand to the blanket and spread my fingers flat and just let myself feel the weight of it—all of it, the marble floor, the blood, the way Julian had walked past me without looking down. The way Estelle had smiled over his shoulder.

I lay very still and I felt all of it, and I did not look away from any of it.

Across the strip of floor, Grandpa's eyes opened.

He didn't speak. He just looked at me, and I looked at him, and something passed between us that didn't need words. Then he reached across the space between the beds—slow, his arm trembling slightly from the seizure's aftermath—and set his hand over mine.

His palm was dry and warm and very heavy.

I did not cry. But I held onto his hand like it was the last solid thing in the room.

Clara came to stand at the foot of my bed a little while later. She held her clipboard against her chest. Her mouth was pressed into a line that told me everything before she opened it.

"Zora." Her voice was very gentle. "I'm so sorry. The pup—" She stopped. Started again. "There was nothing I could do. By the time they brought you in—" Another stop.

She didn't finish the sentence. She didn't need to.

I nodded once.

The room went very quiet inside my chest. Not the quiet of grief, not yet—that would come later, in waves I wasn't ready to name. This was a different quiet. The quiet of something being finished. Of a door closing on a room you will never go back into.

I pressed my free hand flat against my stomach, under the blanket, where no one could see.

Grandpa's hand tightened over mine.

Julian came hours later.

I heard him before the door opened—his footsteps in the corridor, the particular rhythm of them, the weight I had learned to recognize in the dark. My body knew him the way bodies know things they were never asked to learn.

He stepped inside and stopped. He looked at me, then at Grandpa Memphis, then back at me. His face was a wreck. His shirt was still the dress shirt from the banquet, the collar open now, and there was something hollow behind his eyes that I had never seen there before.

He started talking. Fragments, mostly. *He hadn't known. He hadn't understood what was happening. Everything moved so fast. Estelle was—* He said her name and then seemed to hear himself say it and stopped.

I did not look at him. I kept my eyes on the ceiling.

When he went quiet, I let the silence sit for a moment. Then I turned my head and looked at him directly, and I spoke in the flattest, most even voice I had.

"I, Zora Anderson, reject you, Julian West, Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack, as my mate."

The bond broke like a cable snapping under tension—I felt it go, felt the absence of it like a sudden drop in air pressure, like something that had been pressing against my chest for years lifting all at once. It hurt. Of course it hurt. But underneath the pain was something that felt almost like breathing.

Julian made a sound I had never heard from him before. His hand shot out and caught the doorframe. His knees bent. The first wave of bond-sickness hit him visibly, physically, his Alpha aura flickering like a light with a failing connection.

I watched it happen and felt nothing except that quiet.

Then his eyes landed on the bedside table. The folded ultrasound image, still creased from my coat pocket, sitting where Clara had set it when she emptied my things.

He stared at it for a long moment. Then something in his face simply gave way.

He reached into his jacket and produced the moonstone necklace. Estelle's perfume was still on it—I could smell it from the bed. He held it out toward me with both hands, like an offering, like a man who has just understood what he burned down and is holding out the ashes.

I turned my face to the wall.

I did not speak again. There was nothing left in me that belonged to him. Not a word, not a glance, not even the energy of anger.

Behind me, I heard him sink into the chair beside the door. I heard him breathing. I heard the chain of the moonstone clink softly against itself as his hands shook.

I stared at the white wall and thought about nothing at all.

Grandpa Memphis's hand found mine again in the dark.
