Chapter 5

Jackson's office smelled the way it always had. Cedarwood and rain.

I stood just inside the doorway and let it hit me before I could stop it—the scent that my wolf had spent five years learning as safety, as home, as the biological signature of a bond the Moon Goddess herself had designed. My wolf flinched. Not away. Toward. That was the cruelest part. Even now, even with the miscarriage still a raw hollow in my chest and Jaylani's moonflowers still perfuming the suite down the hall, my wolf recognized him.

I breathed through it and crossed the room.

Jackson was standing behind his desk when I entered, not sitting—a deliberate choice, the kind of body language that said *this is a gift I'm offering, not a command I'm issuing.* He'd always been good at the staging.

"Cassandra." He gestured to the chair across from him. "Sit down."

I sat. I folded my hands in my lap. I kept my face exactly where it needed to be—composed, attentive, the Luna register that the pack read as dignity and Jackson had always read as agreement.

"The summit is in four days," he said. He moved around the desk slowly, unhurried, the way he moved when he was confident the room was already his. "I'd like you to attend. At my side."

He paused, like he was waiting for the weight of the offer to land.

"The other Alphas will expect to see us together," he continued. "A stable pair. A united front. It matters, for the pack's standing."

For the pack's standing.

Not: *I want you there.* Not: *You are my Luna.* Not even the performance of tenderness he used to manage in the early years. Just the utility of my presence, dressed in the language of duty.

I looked at him. At the careful set of his shoulders, the practiced gravity in his expression. He was delivering this the way he delivered everything he considered magnanimous—with the particular self-satisfaction of a wolf who has decided his generosity should be visible.

"Of course," I said. Quietly. Evenly.

He nodded, like I'd confirmed something he'd already known. "Good. We'll travel together. The formal presentation is in the main hall—I'm giving the keynote address."

"I know," I said. "I saw the notice."

Something flickered across his face. Too fast to be readable. He recovered immediately, the way he always did.

"Wear the blue," he said. "The formal one. It photographs well."

I nodded once.

He looked at me for a moment—really looked, the way he almost never did anymore—and I watched him decide that my composure meant he was forgiven, or at least that I had accepted the terms of whatever this was. His shoulders dropped a fraction. The tension he'd carried into the room left him.

He believed it. That was the thing about Jackson. He had always believed what was convenient.

"We'll leave at seven," he said. "Don't be late."

I stood. Smoothed my hands over my robes. "I won't be."

I walked out.

I made it to the end of the corridor before I stopped. Put two fingers to the inside of my wrist. Pressed until I felt my pulse—steady, present, mine.

The cedarwood-and-rain scent was still on my clothes. My wolf turned in a slow, miserable circle inside me, caught between instinct and verdict.

I stood there until the sensation passed. Then I kept walking.

---

Renata arrived after dark.

She came the same way she always did—no announcement, no pack escort, a dark sedan in the service lot and a leather document case that she set on the Omega recovery room's narrow table without ceremony.

"Everything is ready," she said. She opened the case. "Account freeze executes the moment the broadcast begins. Not after. I've pre-authorized the filing remotely—it triggers automatically once the summit's livestream timestamp hits the three-minute mark of the keynote."

She turned a page. "Dissolution documents are notarized and complete. The elder council precedent brief cites seven prior cases, three of which involved unsanctioned marking. In all three, the council had no discretion on the asset claim. It's not interpretation. It's pack law."

I nodded. I'd read the precedents myself. Three times.

Then she reached into the outer pocket of the case and produced a sealed envelope. Heavy cream paper. A wax seal I didn't recognize immediately—and then did. The Thornfield Alpha's mark.

"Silas obtained it last week," Renata said. "A formal declaration from Alpha Cade of Thornfield. Confirming Jaylani's banishment from his territory, the nature of the scheme she attempted, and the circumstances of her expulsion. Signed. Sealed. Witnessed by two Thornfield elders."

I took the envelope.

It was heavier than it looked.

I held it for a long moment without opening it. I already knew what it said—Silas had given me the summary. But the weight of it was different. This wasn't a rogue tracker's report. This was an Alpha's formal declaration. Another pack's documented record of exactly what Jaylani was and had always been.

Not an allegation. A pattern. Verified, sealed, and signed.

I set it on top of the dossier and closed the file.

"Good," I said.

Renata studied me for a moment with that surgical steadiness. "Four days."

"Four days."

She closed her document case, stood, and left without another word. That was what I valued most about her. She understood that some moments didn't require anything said.

---

I couldn't sleep.

It wasn't the summit. It wasn't even the bond's pull, though cedarwood-and-rain still ghosted through my senses at the edges of consciousness, the way a wound aches in cold weather long after it's closed.

It was the inner pocket of my formal robes, hanging on the back of the chair across the room.

I got up. Crossed to it. Reached into the pocket and took out the ultrasound image.

I'd been carrying it since the morning after the miscarriage. I hadn't looked at it. I'd just kept it there—folded, precise, tucked against my chest every time I put the robes on—because leaving it somewhere felt like abandonment, and I had already watched one thing be abandoned in that healing wing and I would not do it again.

I sat on the edge of the cot and looked at it now.

The image was small. Grainy the way all ultrasound images are, that particular gray-white blur that requires a healer's trained eye to read correctly. I'd had a healer read it to me. I'd memorized the description. Eight weeks. A heartbeat confirmed.

I pressed two fingers to my wrist. Held.

My wolf stirred.

She'd been quiet for so long—weeks of cold watchful silence, the silence of a wolf who has been patient past all reasonable endurance. She didn't offer comfort now. I hadn't expected her to. She offered something else: a low, steady warmth that moved through me like the first light after a very long night. Not gentle. Not soft.

Done waiting.

We are done waiting.

I sat with it. With her. With the ultrasound image and the weight of the Thornfield declaration in the closed dossier across the room and the cedarwood-and-rain that still lived in my lungs like something I hadn't finished grieving.

I let myself grieve it. All of it. The bond. The pup. The five years I'd spent trusting a covenant that only I had honored.

I gave myself that one night.

Then I folded the ultrasound image with precise, careful hands and slid it into the inner pocket of my summit attire—the blue, the formal one, the one that photographs well—and I did not look at it again.

Four days.

I lay back on the narrow cot and closed my eyes and listened to my wolf breathe.

She sounded, for the first time in years, like herself.
