Chapter 3

I sent the message to Renata on the fifth morning.

Not through pack channels. Through a human courier service—a small firm in the nearest city that asked no questions and kept no records beyond a delivery confirmation number. Renata had given me the contact information three years ago, at a cross-pack gathering, in the way she gave most things: directly, without ceremony, as though she assumed I'd eventually need it.

I think she'd always known I might.

She arrived that afternoon. No pack escort. No announcement. She drove herself in a dark gray sedan and met me in the small private study off the pack house library—a room Jackson rarely used, which meant it smelled only of old paper and cedar shelving and nothing else that would compromise my concentration.

Renata was compact and precise, the kind of wolf whose stillness made rooms feel organized. She set a leather document case on the table, sat down, and looked at me across the surface of the desk the way a surgeon looks at a patient who has already diagnosed themselves correctly.

"You said you had documentation," she said.

"I do." I placed Silas's first dossier on the table. Photographs. Timestamped audio transcriptions from the mind-link recordings. Two witnesses from pack members who'd been in the healing wing corridor and whose statements I'd taken quietly, over separate conversations, in the days since. "The unsanctioned marking is here." I opened to the relevant page. "Photographed. Dated. The bite mark on her neck, documented before she began wearing the high-collared robes."

Renata looked at the photograph for a long moment. Her expression didn't change. "How long ago?"

"Eight months."

She turned a page. Then another. She read the way she did everything—methodically, without performance. When she reached the end of the first section, she looked up.

"And the healer's wing incident?"

"Junior healer Cayson was present for the entirety of it. He hasn't agreed to testify yet." I paused. "He will."

Renata studied me for a moment. "You're certain."

"Yes."

She didn't ask how I knew. She simply made a note.

We spent two hours mapping it out. The ancient mate-bond dissolution rite—rarely invoked, almost never successfully, because most wolves who attempted it were already too weakened by the bond's severance to complete the formal language before the elder council. Renata walked me through every precedent. Every case where it had held. Every case where it had failed and why.

"The territorial claim is the strongest part," she said. "Pack law is explicit: an Alpha who violates the sacred bond through unsanctioned marking of a third party forfeits his exclusive claim to ancestral pack assets in any dissolution proceeding. The elder council has no discretion on that point. It's not a judgment call. It's law."

"I know."

She looked at me again with that surgical steadiness. "I've had clients come to me with evidence before. I've never had one arrive with a legal strategy already outlined."

"I've had five years to understand how this pack works," I said. "And three weeks to understand that I needed to be ready."

Renata closed her document case. "The accounts need to freeze the moment the summit broadcast ends. Not after. Not when Jackson's lawyers file a response. The moment the broadcast ends, before he can make a single call."

"Can you do it that fast?"

"I already have the filing prepared." She allowed herself a small, precise smile. "I drafted it on the drive here."

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist under the table where she couldn't see. Still here.

"Then we're agreed," I said.

She left the way she came. No announcement. No trace.

I was walking back through the main corridor toward the library when I heard the soft footsteps behind me.

"Luna Cassandra."

Jasmine and ash.

I stopped. Turned slowly.

Jaylani stood in the corridor, hands folded, healer trainee robes perfectly pressed. Her expression was everything it always was—soft, sorrowful, trembling at the edges with a grief she had manufactured so thoroughly it had probably started to feel real to her.

"I wanted to check on you," she said. Her voice was very gentle. "I know these days have been—" She paused, like the words were too heavy. "I thought perhaps some herbal tea. Moonpetal and ginger. It helps with—" Another pause. Weighted. Careful. "—recovery."

I looked at her.

Not at the performance. Through it.

I had spent five years learning to read this pack—every flinch, every averted eye, every body angled away from truth. I was good at it. And what I saw beneath Jaylani's trembling softness was not grief, not guilt, not even cruelty. It was patience. The cold, architectural patience of a wolf who had run this calculation across three other packs and knew exactly how long the endgame took.

She was checking the board. That was all this was. She wanted to see how broken I was.

"Thank you," I said. Quietly. Evenly. "I don't need anything."

I turned and walked away.

I heard the precise moment her mask dropped.

It was barely a sound—just a shift in her breathing, a fractional pause before she resettled into the performance. But my wolf caught it. Filed it. That one unguarded half-second when the trembling softness fell away and something colder looked out through her eyes.

I didn't look back.

I didn't need to.

Silas's expanded report arrived four days later. Not through the stone-drop this time—too much material. It came through the courier service, in a sealed envelope, and I read it in the Omega recovery room with the door closed and the window facing the bruised eastern sky.

Ironclaw Pack. An Omega healer trainee, quietly expelled after the Beta's mate reported her to the elder council. No official documentation. The kind of thing a pack buries because the alternative is admitting their Alpha was compromised.

Duskhollow Pack. An identical pattern. A healer trainee who grew close to the Alpha during a Luna's postpartum recovery. Discovered. Banished. No pregnancy confirmed, but the proximity had been documented by two pack warriors who'd been ordered to stay quiet.

Thornfield Pack. A former Gamma who'd spoken to Silas without hesitation—a wolf with nothing left to protect—described a she-wolf who claimed to carry the Alpha's pup. The claim dissolved when she refused the pack healer's examination. She was gone within the week.

Three packs. Three Alphas. Three attempts.

Silvercrest was the fourth. The most precisely targeted. The most patient. The one where she had finally found an Alpha weak enough and a Luna's struggle long enough to give her the opening she needed.

I set the report down on the narrow cot.

My wolf lifted her head.

For the first time since the floor of the healing wing corridor, she didn't sit in cold watchful silence. She growled. Low and steady and certain, the way a wolf growls when it has finally located exactly what it's been tracking.

I pressed my fingers to my wrist. Felt my pulse.

Still here.

And now I knew exactly what I was carrying.
