Chapter 3

The fifth night was when my body decided it had had enough.

I'd been patrolling the eastern border — not because anyone asked me to, but because sitting still in that hotel room made my skin crawl. The withdrawal symptoms had been building for days. Fever that spiked without warning. Nausea that came in waves. And the smells. God, the smells.

Everything was too much. The pine sap bleeding from the trees smelled like it was inside my nose. The deer trail a hundred yards away carried a musk so strong I could taste it. Even the dirt under my boots had a scent — mineral and old and alive in a way I'd never noticed before.

I made it to the tree line before my legs gave out.

The fever hit like a wall. One second I was walking. The next I was on my knees, gripping a tree root so hard the bark cut into my palms. My vision blurred. The forest tilted.

And then something inside me surged.

Not a gentle awakening. Not a timid pulse. A massive, rolling force that pressed against my skin from the inside out, like something enormous trying to claw its way through my ribs.

I couldn't breathe.

My chest felt too small. My bones felt wrong. Everything felt wrong.

I started whispering. Biology facts. The only anchor I had.

"Pheromone receptors in the olfactory cortex," I gasped. "Shift-trigger thresholds regulated by the hypothalamus. Cortisol suppression during transformation. Adrenaline spike at initiation."

The thing inside me didn't care about biology.

It pushed harder. My spine arched. My fingers dug into the tree root until I felt something crack — the wood or my hand, I couldn't tell.

"Muscle fiber restructuring," I whispered. "Bone density increase. Metabolic rate adjustment."

The pressure built until I thought my skin would split open.

Then, slowly, it receded.

Not gone. Just settling. Like a wolf curling up inside my chest, waiting.

I opened my eyes.

Sienna Voss was crouched beside me.

She held a water bottle. Her expression was careful. Not alarmed. Just watching.

"How long have you been there?" My voice came out hoarse.

"Long enough," she said.

She handed me the water. I drank without questioning where it came from or why she was here. The cold helped. My hands were still shaking.

Sienna sat back on her heels. "Whatever is happening inside you," she said quietly, "it's not nothing."

I looked at her. She met my eyes without flinching.

I didn't tell her about the recording. About Johanna and Eugene Fox and the wolfsbane-laced suppressants. I didn't tell her about the thing inside me that was growing stronger every day.

But I didn't tell her to leave either.

We sat there in silence until my breathing steadied. The wolf inside me hummed low and steady. Not gone. Just quiet.

Sienna stood first. "You should get back before someone notices you're out here."

"I don't answer to the pack anymore."

"No," she agreed. "But they're watching you. And Morgan's getting nervous."

I pushed myself to my feet. My legs held. Barely.

"Thanks," I said.

Sienna nodded once and disappeared into the trees.

I made it back to the hotel. Collapsed on the bed. The wolf inside me settled into a rhythm that almost felt like breathing.

I didn't sleep that night. But I didn't shake either.

They came for me three days later.

I was walking the eastern boundary at dusk — same patrol route, same restless need to move — when I heard them. Five wolves. Moving in formation.

Gamma Titus Roberts stepped out of the tree line first. Four pack members flanked him. I recognized two of them from the main hall gathering. The ones who'd laughed when Titus called me defective.

Titus smiled. It wasn't friendly.

"Audrey Daniels," he said. His voice carried the formal weight of pack authority. "You're trespassing on Shadowridge territory. As Gamma, I'm authorized to escort rogue threats off pack land."

"This is neutral border ground," I said. "Check the territorial maps."

"Maps can be disputed." Titus stepped closer. The four pack members spread out, forming a loose circle around me. "What can't be disputed is that you're wolfless. Scentless. Not pack material. You never were."

One of the pack members — a young Delta named Marcus — laughed. "She can't even shift. What's she going to do? File paperwork at us?"

They all thought that was funny.

I watched them circle me. Calculated distances. Noted positions. My leather notebook was in my bag. My phone was in my pocket. I could document this. Add it to the debt ledger.

Titus moved closer. "You should crawl back to whatever hole you came from. The pack's always known you were nothing. We were just too polite to say it."

The thing inside me went very still.

"You're not even worth the effort of a formal rejection," Titus continued. "Weston should've just ignored you from the start. Saved everyone the trouble."

Marcus stepped forward. "Maybe we should make sure she understands—"

Something inside me snapped.

Not emotionally. Biologically.

My bones cracked. The sound was like splintering wood. My muscles tore and reformed with a wet, visceral noise that made Marcus stumble backward.

I tried to speak. To tell them to stop. To tell them I didn't know what was happening.

But my jaw was reshaping. My spine was extending. My hands hit the ground and they weren't hands anymore.

The shift tore through me in seconds.

What emerged wasn't a timid late-bloomer's wolf.

It was massive. Towering. Nearly twice the size of a standard Alpha wolf. My coat shimmered silver — not gray, not white, but pure liquid moonlight that caught the fading sun and threw it back in waves.

The aura hit them before I moved.

Titus dropped to his belly. Face-first into the dirt. No hesitation. No resistance. Just instant, absolute submission.

The four pack members hit the ground a half-second later. Marcus whimpered.

I stood over them. My wolf's consciousness was clear. Sharp. Separate from mine but not separate at all.

And inside my chest, I heard it. The name. Whispered from somewhere deep.

My wolf's name.

I'd never heard anything so certain in my life.

I walked the border line. Slowly. Deliberately. My paws left impressions in the soft earth. The five wolves stayed flat on the ground, necks bared, until I was out of sight.

Then I shifted back.

The transformation reversed just as fast. Bones cracking into place. Muscles reforming. Skin settling.

I stood there in human form, naked and trembling, and heard my wolf's name echo one more time.

I couldn't speak. Couldn't move.

For the first time in my life, I had no words. No biology facts. No documentation.

Just silence.

And a wolf that was finally, undeniably mine.

By morning, every neighboring pack would know.
