Chapter 5

The message came through Winifred's secure line just after dawn.

*Alpha Elias of Shadowvale at the north gate. Demanding entry. Invoking mate bond rights.*

I was in the garden when she found me, the frost still clinging to the rosemary. My wolf stirred—not with longing, but with something colder. Recognition. The way you recognize a scar.

"He's here," Winifred said quietly.

I didn't ask who. I already knew.

I set down the tea Gael had brought me twenty minutes earlier and stood. My legs were steady. My hands didn't shake. Two weeks ago, I couldn't walk to the end of the hall without needing to sit down. Now I could feel my wolf shifting beneath my ribs, curious and wary, but present. Alive.

"I'll meet him," I said.

Winifred's expression didn't change. "You don't have to."

"I know."

She studied my face for a long moment, then nodded. "I'll have warriors at the gate. And Gael."

I almost smiled. "Of course."

---

The walk to the north gate felt longer than it was.

I could feel eyes on me as I passed—warriors on patrol, pack members who'd heard the commotion, Winifred's enforcers taking up positions along the perimeter. But I kept my gaze forward, my steps even, my breathing controlled.

Gael fell into step beside me without a word.

I didn't look at him. I didn't need to. His presence was steady, grounding, the way gravity is. I'd stopped questioning why that mattered three days ago.

"You don't have to say anything to him," Gael said quietly. "You can turn around right now."

"I know," I said again.

He didn't argue. He just stayed close.

When the gate came into view, I saw him.

Elias was standing just outside the iron bars, his hands gripping the metal like he wanted to tear it apart. He looked—broken. That was the only word for it. His shirt was wrinkled, his jaw shadowed with days-old stubble, his eyes wild and red-rimmed. The Alpha aura that used to fill every room he entered was fractured, uneven, like a radio signal cutting in and out.

He saw me and went still.

"Emily," he breathed.

I stopped ten feet from the gate. Close enough to see him. Far enough that he couldn't reach.

"Alpha Elias," I said evenly.

He flinched. Actually flinched.

"Don't—don't call me that," he said, his voice ragged. "Emily, please. I need to talk to you. I need to explain—"

"There's nothing to explain," I said.

My voice was calm. It surprised me how calm it was.

His hands tightened on the bars. "You don't understand. Natasha—she lied about so many things. I was trying to do the right thing. I thought—"

"You thought you could redirect my Healer to your mistress's mother and I would just accept it," I said quietly. "You thought you could keep a secret daughter for four years and I wouldn't notice. You thought the mate bond meant I would forgive anything."

His wolf was howling. I could hear it through the bond—faint now, distant, like something calling from the other side of a canyon. My wolf didn't answer. She just pressed closer to me, wary and protective.

"I made mistakes," Elias said desperately. "I know I did. But we're mates, Emily. The Moon Goddess chose us. You can't just—you can't just throw that away—"

"I didn't throw it away," I said. "You did."

He stared at me.

"The rejection is legally binding," I continued, my tone even and final. "Filed through Lycan registry. Notarized. You signed nothing because you refused to accept it, but that doesn't make it less real. I am no longer your Luna. You are no longer my Alpha. The bond is severed."

"No," he said, shaking his head. "No, I can still feel it—"

"What you feel is an echo," I said. "And it will fade."

His face twisted. "Emily, please—"

"Leave, Elias," I said quietly. "Before someone makes you."

He reached through the bars.

I didn't move. I just watched as his hand extended toward me, shaking, desperate, possessive in a way that used to feel like love and now just felt like ownership.

"Don't," Gael said.

His voice was low, unhurried, and absolutely final.

Elias's gaze snapped to him. "Who the hell are you?"

Gael stepped forward. Not between us. Beside me. Close enough that I could feel the heat of him, the steady, unshakable presence that had been there every night for two weeks.

"Step back," Gael said.

Elias's lip curled. "I'm talking to my mate—"

Gael moved.

I didn't even see the blow. One second Elias was gripping the bars. The next, he was on the ground, blood pouring from his mouth, his jaw clearly, visibly broken.

Gael stood over him, his expression unchanged, his breathing steady.

"She is not your mate," Gael said quietly. "She is mine. Fated, recognized, and under Lycan protection. If you approach her again, I will not stop at your jaw."

Elias stared up at him, eyes wide, blood staining his teeth.

Gael's gaze didn't waver. "Do you understand me, Alpha?"

Elias didn't answer. He just looked at me, his expression shattered, pleading.

I met his eyes.

And I turned around.

I walked back toward the pack house, my steps even, my wolf quiet and calm inside me. I didn't look back. Not once.

Behind me, I heard Gael's voice, low and cold. "Leave. Now."

I didn't hear Elias's response.

I didn't need to.

---

That night, my wolf stirred.

Not the sluggish, painful shift I'd grown used to over the past year. Not the desperate clawing of something trying to survive.

This was different.

She was awake. Alert. And she was—happy.

I sat up in bed, my hand pressed to my chest, feeling her moving beneath my ribs with a joy I hadn't felt from her in five years. Not once. Not even in the beginning, when I'd thought Elias and I were fated and whole.

There was a knock at the door.

"Come in," I said quietly.

Gael stepped inside. He didn't sit. He just stood there, hands in his pockets, his expression careful.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

I looked at him.

"Did your wolf recognize me," I said. "The first time you walked into this room."

He went very still.

"Yes," he said.

My breath caught.

"When?" I asked.

"The moment I caught your scent," he said quietly. "White jasmine and winter rain. I'd never smelled anything like it. And my wolf—" He paused. "He knew."

I pressed my hand harder against my chest, feeling my wolf's joyful, insistent stirring.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I whispered.

His gaze was steady, unflinching. "Because you weren't ready to know. And I wasn't going to take that choice from you."

I stared at him.

"I've known since the first second," Gael said softly. "And I've been waiting for you to be ready to know it too."

My wolf surged.

And for the first time in a year, I let her.
