Chapter 3

The headlights swept across the pack house at exactly seven-thirty.

Elias's truck pulled into the drive with the same unhurried confidence it always did, the engine cutting off in the silence. I imagined him sitting there for a moment, checking his phone, maybe adjusting the collar of the shirt he'd chosen for tonight. The annual Thanksgiving Banquet. The whole pack would be gathering within the hour—warriors, their families, the elders who still remembered when Shadowvale had been something worth protecting.

He would expect me at the door. Or in the kitchen, aproned and flushed from the ovens, the way I'd been every year before this one.

I was two hundred miles north by then, my hands steady on the wheel, the Duncan ancestral territory deed already filed and sealed in a Lycan registry office he couldn't touch.

But I could still see it in my mind—the way he would push open the front door and pause.

---

The house was dark.

That would be the first thing he'd notice. No warmth spilling from the windows. No scent of roasted meat or rising dough. Just cold air and silence.

He'd call my name. Once, maybe twice. His voice would echo in the empty foyer.

Then he'd walk to the kitchen.

I'd left the pendant light on over the island. Just that one. A single circle of yellow falling on three pages of notarized rejection papers and the Luna pendant I'd worn for five years, lying across my signature like a period at the end of a sentence.

*I, Emily Duncan, daughter of the late Alpha Marcus and Alpha Elena Duncan of the fallen Duncan Pack, reject you, Alpha Elias of Shadowvale, as my mate, my bond, and my future.*

I wondered if he'd pick up the pendant first. Or if he'd read the words.

I wondered if his hands would shake.

---

Rowan told me later what happened next.

Elias didn't speak. He didn't call my name again. He just stood there, staring at the papers, the pendant gleaming dully in his palm.

Then his wolf howled.

Rowan said it was the kind of sound that shouldn't come from a living thing. Feral, broken, wrong. It brought him running from the east wing, along with half the warriors on patrol. They found Elias on his knees in the kitchen, the rejection papers crumpled in one fist, his body shaking like he was shifting but couldn't quite manage it.

Rowan tried to approach. Elias snarled at him—an Alpha command so raw it drove every wolf in the room back three steps.

"Where is she."

It wasn't a question.

Rowan didn't have an answer.

By midnight, Elias had wolves searching every corner of Shadowvale territory. By dawn, he'd sent scouts to the neighboring packs. By noon, he'd discovered the Duncan ancestral territory transfer.

Five hundred acres. Timber rights. Water access. The private den where my parents had lived and died. All of it gone, filed through Lycan legal channels with signatures he couldn't contest and a timestamp that predated my disappearance by seventy-two hours.

Transferred to Northreach Pack.

Rowan said Elias put his fist through the office wall when he read the registry confirmation.

I wished I could have seen his face.

---

Silvercrest smelled like snow and cedar and something I couldn't name—something old, steady, unshakable.

I pulled into the main compound just after sunset. My hands were cramping from gripping the wheel. My wolf was so quiet I had to check, twice, to make sure she was still there.

Aunt Winifred was waiting on the steps.

She didn't say anything when I got out of the car. She just walked down, took my face in both hands, and held me. Her grip was firm, grounding, the way my mother's used to be. I didn't cry. I couldn't. But I stood there and let her hold me until my knees stopped shaking.

"You're safe now," she said quietly. "He can't touch you here."

I nodded.

She stepped back, studied my face, and her expression shifted—just slightly, into something colder.

"Maren's inside," she said. "She's ready when you are."

---

Dr. Maren Thorne was not what I expected.

She was small, silver-haired, with the kind of face that gave nothing away. She looked at me the way a surgeon looks at an incision site—clinical, assessing, without pity or comfort.

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

She placed two fingers against the inside of my wrist, and I felt it immediately—a pulse of foreign power, ancient and cold, pressing into my veins like a probe. My wolf stirred, sluggish and wary.

Maren was silent for a long time.

When she finally pulled her hand back, her expression hadn't changed.

"Your wolf-blood is septic," she said. "Another month and you would have lost her entirely. Two months and you'd be dead."

I swallowed. "Can you fix it?"

"Yes."

She didn't smile. Didn't soften.

"But the treatment will hurt," she continued. "Your body will fight the cure as hard as it's fighting the disease. You'll spend the next two weeks wishing you were dead. And if you give up halfway through, you will be."

I looked at her.

"When do we start?"

Something flickered in her eyes. Not warmth. Respect, maybe.

"Now," she said.

---

The first session lasted four hours.

I don't remember most of it. I remember Maren's hands on my chest, her power flooding into me like ice water in my veins. I remember my wolf thrashing, panicked, trying to retreat deeper inside me where the foreign magic couldn't reach.

I remember screaming.

When I surfaced, it was dark outside. Winifred was sitting beside the bed, her hand resting lightly on my shoulder. My body ached everywhere, a deep, bone-level exhaustion that made even breathing feel like work.

"How do you feel?" Winifred asked quietly.

I thought about it.

"Alive," I said.

She smiled, just slightly.

"Good," she said. "That's a start."

I closed my eyes and let the darkness take me again.
