Chapter 4

The silver burns across my back pulled tight every time I breathed, but I didn't slow down.

Every morning at dawn, before the pack house stirred, I took Bodie by the hand and walked. The ground was hard with frost, crunching under our boots as we traced the outer tree line. It was the only hour we were truly alone. The guards on the night shift were tired, their eyes dull, and the morning patrols hadn't yet begun their rounds.

I walked the perimeter fence, watching the rhythm of the sentry rotations. I noted the blind spots where the chain-link met the rocky creek bed, and counted the minutes between patrols. Twelve minutes at sunrise. Plenty of time. I wasn't running yet, but I was building the blueprint. Quietly. Accurately. The way I built everything.

Bodie walked beside me, his small hand tucked into my pocket. He didn't ask to run or hunt. Instead, he carried scraps of paper and stubs of charcoal, crouching on flat stones to draw. He drew wolves—massive, wild creatures with dark eyes and thick fur.

"For you, Mom," he whispered one morning, pressing a folded sketch of a great silver beast into my palm.

I knelt, smoothing his dark hair. "It's beautiful, sweetheart."

Back in my room, I locked the drawing inside my design desk, laying it flat over the formal conduct warning and the flash drive of security logs. It was the only clean thing in that drawer.

The peace didn't last.

Two weeks after the gala, Rayna insisted on shadowing the southern perimeter inspection. She claimed she needed to audit border logistics for pack operations. Drake, blind to the absurdity of sending his operations head to a border line, ordered me to accompany her.

We never made it past the western ridge.

They came from the treeline like shadows—Rogue King Emir Castellano's elite scouts. It was fast, brutal, and coordinated. Our three Delta escorts were neutralized before they could even draw their sidearms. Cold iron collars snapped around our throats, dampening our strength, and rough hands hauled us into the bed of an unmarked truck.

An hour later, the tailgate slammed open.

Cold mist hung low over the neutral border clearing. Snow flurries drifted through the gray morning air. Emir’s rogues held us kneeling on the frozen earth, thirty yards apart from the Ironclad Pack boundary line.

Across the clearing, Drake arrived with a strike force. Marcus stood at his right shoulder, a rifle held tight across his chest, his jaw locked. Drake’s face was dark, furious, and radiating lethal power.

Emir Castellano stepped forward from the tree line. The Rogue King was lean, scarred, and completely at ease. He wore a heavy wool coat, his hands shoved deep into his pockets.

"Alpha Armstrong," Emir’s voice cut through the damp cold, flat and conversational. "You’ve made a mess of our shared trade corridors lately. Consider this a settlement. But I'm a generous man. I won't kill both."

Emir gestured with his chin toward us.

Rayna knelt on the frost, sobbing loudly, her silk scarf torn, her pale shoulders shaking. "Drake! Please! Drake, help me!"

I knelt in silence. The cold bit through my thin jeans into my kneecaps. My back throbbed where the silver lash marks rubbed against my shirt. I didn't cry out. I didn't beg. I just looked Drake dead in the eye, my face a flat, emotionless mask. I pressed my right thumb hard against the pulse point of my left wrist. *One. Two. Three.*

"The terms are simple, Drake," Emir said, amused. "You take one back to your den. The other stays with my wolves. Choose."

Marcus stepped closer to Drake, his voice urgent. "Alpha, the Luna—she’s your fated mate. Pack law dictates—"

"Quiet, Marcus," Drake snapped.

He didn't look at Marcus. He looked at me. His golden eyes flickered, cold and calculating. He looked at my torn clothes, the silent refusal in my posture, the defiance he had spent months trying to beat out of me. Then his gaze shifted to Rayna, trembling, broken, and helpless.

Drake took a slow, deliberate breath. The air around him dropped in temperature. He didn't hesitate.

"I, Drake Armstrong, Alpha of the Ironclad Pack," his voice boomed across the frozen clearing, carrying the absolute, crushing weight of pack authority, "reject you, Hayden Grant, as my mate and Luna."

The words struck my chest like a lead bullet.

Deep inside me, the mate mark on the curve of my neck flared with a sudden, searing white heat. Then, just as violently, it turned to absolute ice. The burning turned numb.

Inside my soul, my wolf let out a terrible, ragged sound. She didn't snarl. She didn't rage. She simply crumpled, collapsing inward like a building whose pillars had been kicked away.

Across our bond, where his heartbeat had thudded against mine for six years, there was suddenly... nothing. The channel snapped. A vast, echoing void opened in my chest, hollow and terrifyingly quiet.

Drake didn't watch me fall. He turned his back on me instantly, his eyes locked onto Rayna. "Release the girl," he ordered coldly.

Emir gave a short nod. A rogue shoved Rayna forward. She stumbled across the line into Drake’s open arms, weeping into his collar, burying her face against his throat. Drake wrapped his heavy coat around her bare shoulders, his movements tender, shielding her from the cold.

A rogue stood over me, his face twisted in a grin. He drew a serrated hunting blade from his boot.

"A souvenir from the Ironclad," the rogue sneered, and dragged the cold steel across my ribs.

Pain exploded along my side, hot blood soaking instantly through my sweater. I gasped, tumbling sideways onto the frozen grass. The iron collar was ripped from my neck, tearing my skin, and they kicked me toward the ditch at the territory marker like a bag of refuse.

Through the falling snow, I watched Drake turn toward the Ironclad transport vehicles. He was carrying Rayna in his arms, his back completely turned to me. He never looked back. Not once.

Emir stood at the edge of the clearing, watching the Alpha’s retreating back. The Rogue King slowly pulled a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and shook his head with quiet disgust.

"Fucking idiot," Emir muttered to the empty air, his tone entirely dry. "He rejected a diamond-furred she-wolf to keep a mutt."

I lay in the freezing mud, my fingers dug into the dead grass. Blood pooled under my ribs, warm and sticky, but beneath my collarbone, the bond was silent.

Dead.

I closed my eyes, and for the first time in six years, I felt the terrifying, absolute peace of having nothing left to lose.
