Chapter 2

The formal notice arrived on heavy cream parchment, stamped with the Alpha’s wax crest.

*Luna Conduct Warning: Unprovoked physical assault upon Operations Head Rayna Dixon.*

Beneath Rayna’s typed statement sat Drake’s familiar, jagged signature. A new clause was scribbled in his handwriting at the bottom: *Until further review, the Luna’s authority to issue direct operational orders to pack Omegas is suspended without prior Beta approval.*

Rayna had made sure the entire pack knew before lunch. The Omegas dropped their gazes when I walked through the halls. The sentries shifted their weight, suddenly finding the baseboards fascinating.

In my private room, I stood by the window overlooking the frost-covered yard. Bodie was sleeping down the hall, his small chest rising and falling in heavy, hollow rhythms. He hadn't asked about his wolf since waking up. He didn't have to. The quiet inside him was loud enough.

I smoothed the warning letter against my design desk—the only piece of furniture in this house I had bought with my own savings. I folded the parchment into a neat, precise rectangle, slid it into the bottom drawer, and turned the brass key until it clicked.

By Thursday, Rayna’s takeover had teeth.

She had two Delta guards haul three filing cabinets and two rolling racks of clothes down the Alpha wing. She took the spacious suite right across from Drake’s master bedroom. "For organizational efficiency," she announced sweetly to the floor staff.

She began slipping into the 7:00 AM strategy briefings, sitting at Drake’s right hand with a leather notebook. Drake let her. When she poured his coffee, she leaned so close her dark curls brushed his collar. His scent—winter pine—was practically swallowed by her sweet clover perfume.

The public cut came at the formal Friday dinner.

I walked into the dining hall and headed toward my usual chair at the head of the oak table. But a little place card rested on the polished wood. In neat calligraphy, it read: *Rayna Dixon, Operations.*

My real name was twenty feet away, down at the far end, past the Gamma’s teenage sons and right beside the drafty kitchen door.

"Just a seasonal restructure, Luna," Rayna murmured as she passed me, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "To facilitate briefing updates during the meal."

I didn't answer. I didn't yell. I walked to the end of the table, pulled out the cold wooden chair, and sat down.

Drake never looked up. He carved his steak, laughed at something the Beta said, and let his knee brush Rayna's under the linen cloth. Across the mate bond, there was nothing for me. No guilt. No heat. Just a flat, greasy hum of complacency.

I picked up my fork and ate every bite in total silence.

Later that night, I took the back stairs down to the clinic.

The healer's quarters smelled of dried elderberry, rubbed alcohol, and silver salve. Seraphine Voss was cleaning instruments in the back sink. When she saw me, her shoulders stiffened.

"Hayden," she said softly, drying her hands on a clean towel. "You shouldn't be down here."

I pulled a small, foil-wrapped packet from my coat and laid it on the stainless-steel counter. "This is the leftover turkey from Bodie's plate. I took it before the kitchen staff swept the bins."

Seraphine stared at the foil. "Hayden..."

"Run the panel, Seraphine. Please."

She hesitated, her jaw tightening, then nodded once. "Give me three days."

Three days later, I returned after midnight. Seraphine pulled the clinic blinds shut and slid a single sheet of handwritten notes across the desk. Her fingers were shaking.

"Trace wolfsbane," she whispered. "Deliberately purified. It was too diluted to trigger a standard kitchen toxin sweep, but high enough to scorch the undeveloped bridge of a pup’s inner core. It forced the dormancy cascade."

My stomach dropped into ice water. "Can you take this to the council?"

Seraphine looked at the floor. "The meat sat at room temperature for hours. The chain of custody is broken. Pack law requires sealed, immediate collection by an active guard. If I present this, the council will say you contaminated it out of jealousy. They'll throw it out, Hayden."

"Then Drake would call it a fabrication," I said, my voice dead.

"Yes." Seraphine touched my arm. Her eyes were red. "I'm sorry."

"Don't throw the notes away," I said quietly. "Keep your own secondary log. In your private ledger. Don't tell anyone."

Seraphine swallowed hard, opened a locked cabinet behind her desk, and slid the paper beneath her medical journals. "Done."

The next morning, Drake summoned me to his third-floor office.

Winter sun poured through the high arched windows, casting long, sharp shadows across his mahogany desk. He looked up from a stack of security reports, his expression perfectly composed.

He didn't look angry. He looked like an executive reviewing a bad quarterly report.

"The Allied Charity Gala is next weekend," Drake said, tapping a silver pen against the wood. "White River Pack territory. It’s an important diplomatic night."

"I know the date," I replied.

"You're coordinating external security for our convoy," he said, sliding a thick blue folder toward the edge of the desk. "Perimeter sweeps, shift rotations, transport routes."

I looked at the folder, then at him. "You stripped my authority to command Omegas three days ago, Drake. Now you want me running a security detail on foreign ground?"

"Rayna is handling internal relations and guest seating," he said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. "This is pack defense. Consider it a test of your continued usefulness, Hayden. The pack needs to see that you can still pull your weight without causing scenes."

*Usefulness.*

He spoke as if I were a cracked tractor or a rusted fence, not his fated mate.

"I'll coordinate the routes," I said.

"Good." He went straight back to his papers, dismissing me with a wave of his hand.

Through the bond, I felt a faint, careless ping of satisfaction—he was just pleased he wouldn't have to argue.

I picked up the file and turned toward the door. As I stepped out into the carpeted hallway, I pressed the pad of my thumb hard against the pulse point on my left wrist, feeling the frantic, silent beat of my own blood.
