Chapter 2

I stood frozen in the parking lot of the Crescent Ridge Pack House, my body numb with shock as Ryan's leather jacket settled around Chloe's shoulders. The gesture was unmistakable—a public claim in front of our mixed pack gathering. My wolf, Lyra, was howling so loudly in my mind that I could barely hear my own thoughts.

Ryan's voice slipped into our private mind-link, the connection we'd shared for two years now feeling thin and strained like a fraying rope.

*We need to talk, Madison.*

The drive back to my cabin was silent and suffocating. Ryan followed in his truck, Chloe conspicuously absent. Small mercies, I supposed. The moment we stepped inside, I whirled on him.

"Is it true?" My voice cracked. "Is she really pregnant with your pup?"

Ryan ran a hand through his dark hair, his Beta aura flickering around him like a dull flame. There was no shame in his eyes, only calculation.

"Yes," he said simply. "It's true."

The confirmation hit me like a physical blow. I staggered backward, my hand finding the kitchen counter for support. Lyra's pain merged with mine, a double agony that threatened to tear me apart from the inside.

"How could you?" I whispered. "We're mates."

Ryan's expression shifted, a businessman about to pitch an idea. "That's what I want to talk about. I've been thinking about this situation, and I believe there's an opportunity here."

"Opportunity?" The word tasted like poison on my tongue.

"A progressive three-way pack arrangement," he said, his tone maddeningly reasonable. "You, me, and Chloe. You could help raise the pup. It would strengthen our territory through multiple bloodlines."

Lyra screamed in my head, a sound of pure anguish and rage. I physically winced from the force of it.

"You want me to help raise your bastard pup with the she-wolf you cheated with?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Ryan's eyes narrowed. "Don't use that term. This is about pack strength and alliance. The Crescent Ridge and Shadowpine connection would be reinforced."

He began pacing, lecturing me as if we were discussing pack border patrol schedules rather than the complete destruction of our mate bond.

"Multi-bloodline alliances are the future of strong packs," he continued. "Your mother is the daughter of Alpha Marcus. Your lineage combined with mine and Chloe's diverse bloodline could create a powerful next generation."

I felt sick. "This isn't about pack strength. This is about you wanting to keep both of us."

Ryan's Beta dominance flared, his eyes flashing yellow. "Be reasonable, Madison. What are your alternatives? Severing our bond would leave you an Omega, vulnerable and without protection."

The threat was clear in his voice. In werewolf society, a she-wolf whose mate bond was broken often suffered a devastating loss of status. Without the connection to her mate's power, she could drop to the lowest rank—Omega—or be forced to leave the pack entirely.

"You'd do that to me?" I whispered, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. "After two years?"

"I'm offering you a solution that keeps you positioned as my primary female," he snarled, patience evaporating. "Many would be grateful."

I couldn't respond. The pain in my chest was becoming unbearable as our already weakened bond began to fracture further. Ryan must have taken my silence for submission because his expression softened into something almost pitying.

"Think about it," he said, heading for the door. "I'll give you time."

After he left, I collapsed onto my bed, curling into a tight ball under the blankets. The physical pain of our bond splintering felt like glass shards in my chest. I sobbed until I had nothing left, Lyra's whimpers echoing my own.

Hours passed. The moon rose high, its light filtering through my window. In the stillness of midnight, Lyra's voice broke through years of submission and doubt.

*Call him*, she urged.

"Call who?" I whispered into the darkness.

*Blake Harrison. The Silvermoon Alpha.*

The name sent an unexpected shiver through me. Blake Harrison—powerful, respected, and someone I hadn't spoken to in years.

"Why would an Alpha help me?" I asked, my voice hoarse from crying.

Lyra's response was simple but filled with a certainty I couldn't understand: *Because he's meant to.*

My trembling fingers reached for my phone. What did I have to lose that Ryan hadn't already taken?
