Chapter 2

The diner smelled like burnt coffee and old grease. I sat in the back booth with Barnaby curled against my side, his warm weight the only thing keeping me tethered. He was getting bigger — not quite ready to shift, but close. His fur had started coming in thicker, silver-tipped at the ears in a way that made my chest tight every time I looked at him.

I'd been staying in the borderlands for two weeks. A rented room above a supply shop, paid in cash from the small stash I'd saved over five years of Omega wages. No pack. No bond. Just me and a wolf pup who trusted me without question.

It should have felt like freedom.

It felt like waiting.

The diner door opened. I didn't look up. Didn't need to. The shift in the air told me everything — two wolves, both ranked, both carrying the kind of confidence that came from never being challenged.

Footsteps approached. Stopped at my table.

"Hello, Olive."

Eli's voice. Smooth. Controlled. Like we were old friends running into each other by chance.

I kept my eyes on my coffee. Barnaby's ears flattened against his skull, a low whine building in his throat. I put my hand on his head. Steady.

"You're a hard woman to find," Eli said. He slid into the booth across from me without asking. Blakely followed, settling beside him with the kind of precise grace that looked rehearsed. Her red coat was spotless. Her smile was thin.

I still didn't look up.

"We need to talk," Eli said.

"No," I said quietly. "We don't."

Silence. Then the sound of paper sliding across the table. I glanced down.

A formal document. Ironvale Pack seal at the top. Heavy legal language in neat rows. My name in the center, underlined.

Rogue Brand Petition.

I stared at it. The words blurred slightly at the edges, my vision narrowing to the single line that mattered: *Olive Mercer, formerly bonded, currently unaffiliated, petition for formal rogue designation pending Alpha Council approval.*

Rogue. Legally killable on sight. Banned from every allied territory. No pack would shelter me. No neutral ground would protect me.

A death sentence with paperwork.

"It's already been filed," Eli said. His tone was almost apologetic. Almost. "The Council meets in three days. Once it's approved, every pack in the region will have legal grounds to eliminate you as a threat."

I looked up then. Met his eyes.

He didn't flinch. But something in his expression shifted — a flicker of discomfort, quickly smoothed over.

"It doesn't have to go through," he continued. "I can withdraw the petition. All you have to do is come back."

Blakely leaned forward slightly. "We're offering you a place, Olive. Omega quarters. Stable work. You'd serve under me directly, of course, but it's better than being packless. Better than being hunted."

Her smile widened. "Much better than being dead."

I looked at her. Really looked. At the woman who had stood beside Eli at the banquet, who had smiled while he called me defective, who had accepted him as her chosen mate like it was a transaction she'd been planning for months.

Maybe it was.

Barnaby growled — a real growl this time, deeper than his puppy lungs should have been able to produce. Blakely's gaze flicked to him, her smile tightening.

"You even picked up a stray," she said lightly. "How fitting."

Something inside me cracked.

Not broke. Cracked. Like ice under pressure, the fracture spreading fast and deep, and suddenly I could feel it — the thing I'd been burying for five years, the wolf I'd caged to make Eli comfortable, the power I'd swallowed down every single day because I thought love meant making yourself smaller.

It surged forward.

My eyes flashed silver. I felt it happen — the color blazing hot behind my pupils, the world sharpening into focus so intense it hurt. Every scent in the diner amplified. Every heartbeat. Every breath.

And then the aura hit.

It wasn't intentional. I didn't know how to control it. It just — erupted. A raw, unfiltered pulse of dominance that radiated outward like a shockwave, rattling the windows in their frames, shaking the glasses on every table, sending the silverware clattering to the floor.

Eli went rigid. His entire body locked, shoulders pulling back, chin lifting — and then his head tilted, exposing his throat in a gesture so instinctive he couldn't have stopped it if he tried.

Blakely made a choked sound. Her hand flew to her neck, pressing against her own throat like she was trying to hold it closed, her eyes wide and white-rimmed with a terror she couldn't name.

Every wolf in the diner froze. Heads bowed. Throats bared. Submission rippling through the room like a wave I hadn't meant to create.

The moment stretched. Held.

Then it passed.

The aura faded as fast as it had come, snapping back inside me like a rubber band pulled too tight. The silver in my eyes dimmed. The pressure in the room eased.

But the damage was done.

Eli stared at me, his face bone-white, his hand trembling where it gripped the edge of the table. Blakely had gone completely still, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps.

I stood. Picked up Barnaby, cradling him against my chest. He nuzzled into my neck, his heartbeat steady and trusting.

I looked down at Eli. At the man who had called me defective. Who had tried to brand me a rogue. Who had just offered me servitude like it was mercy.

"Withdraw the petition or don't," I said quietly. "It won't matter."

I walked out.

Behind me, I heard Blakely's voice, shaking and thin. "What the hell was that?"

Eli didn't answer.

I stepped into the cold air, Barnaby warm against my ribs, and kept walking.

Somewhere to the north, in the Lycan Court's war room, Cassius Valdren set down an intelligence report and told his Gamma to find the wolf whose scent had just lit up every territorial sensor within a fifty-mile radius.

I didn't know that yet.

But my wolf did.

She was already running toward him.
