Chapter 4

The eastern border outpost was a twenty-minute walk from Ironridge's main compound, through a stretch of pine corridor that smelled like frost and old bark. I had volunteered for the supply run three times before Natalia stopped questioning why.

The real reason was the patrol patterns. I had been mapping them since my second week—not because I planned anything, not yet, but because mapping was how my brain processed a new territory the way other wolves processed it through scent. I logged timing, rotation gaps, the places where the coverage thinned. Old healer habit. Know the body before you treat it.

Buster had not come with me today. He was sleeping in the clinic, head on his grey blanket, and I had told myself he needed the rest. The truth was that I had looked at the supply route on the map that morning and felt something I could not name move through my chest—not fear, exactly. More like the particular stillness that comes before weather turns.

I should have listened to it.

The warehouse appeared at the edge of a service road three miles outside pack territory—abandoned, corrugated walls going orange with rust, one door hanging off its upper hinge. I had passed it twice before on supply runs. It had always been empty.

It was not empty now.

They were fast. I will give them that. Four of them, rogue-scented, the kind of wolves who had been living outside pack structure long enough that the feral edge had set into their movements. They came from the sides and behind simultaneously, and without a wolf I had no scent warning, nothing but the crunch of gravel a half-second before a hand closed on my collar and pulled me backward off my feet.

My healer's kit hit the concrete first. Then me.

The impact drove the air out of my lungs. I had a single clear moment of vision—rusted ceiling beams, grey light through a broken skylight, four faces arranged above me with the particular blank professionalism of wolves who had been paid to do something specific—before a knee came down on my chest and the weight made breathing a project.

I did not scream. I had nothing to scream toward.

One of them crouched beside me. He was holding something that glowed at its tip—orange-red, the color of a coal just before it goes white. The smell reached me before the heat did: wolfsbane, dense and medicinal and wrong, soaked into the metal of the brand until the smoke coming off it made my eyes water and my throat close.

Rogue property. I understood what this was. I understood exactly what Lyla Stevens had paid for.

I thought, with a clarity that surprised me: she didn't tell Noah.

And then I thought: it doesn't matter.

I reached for the mate mind-link.

I had not touched it since the ceremony. I had not wanted to. The thread was dead at my end—cold, thin, the texture of something that had been cut and left to dry—but the connection ran both directions, and rejection doesn't sever the channel entirely, not immediately, not until the formal bond-break completes on both sides. I could feel it still. Barely. Like a phone line with no signal, just static and the faint proof that the line exists.

I sent one pulse through it. One word, no more.

Help.

The brand was six inches from my shoulder.

I counted the seconds the way I counted heartbeats in the clinic. One. Two. Three.

His response came back fast. Faster than I expected, which meant some part of him was still monitoring the thread. Which meant he had known it was still there and chosen to leave it intact, and I filed that away behind everything else because it told me something about him I had not wanted to know.

A contemptuous scoff. Not even words at first—just the mental texture of someone rolling their eyes, the equivalent of a shrug so complete it was almost elegant. And then his voice, clear and unhurried, the way he had always sounded when he was performing unbothered for an audience of one.

*Stop your drama. You're not my problem anymore.*

And then the click.

Deliberate. Unhurried. The full severance, clean as a door shutting.

The brand touched my shoulder.

The wolfsbane smoke filled my lungs, and the pain was white and total, and somewhere in the white there was a sound I had never heard before—low, vast, and rising—and I realized after a moment that it was coming from inside me.

From a place that had been silent my entire life.

The rogue with the brand jerked backward. Not because of anything I did. Because the floor cracked under me—a sound like a gunshot—and my spine arched off the concrete without my permission, and the sound inside me became something that was no longer sound at all but pressure, and heat, and the sensation of something immense and silver and furious pressing outward from every cell I had.

My vision went gold.

The warehouse door blew open.
