Before the pack, he vows their bond is eternal, blessed by the Moon Goddess, and names her his Luna. The celebration roars—yet the pendant hangs heavier than it should, a quiet warning beneath the triumph. When Liam's betrayal shatters their sacred mating bond, Kairi is left with nothing but ashes and the unborn pup she carries. But she will not fade. From the wreckage of a broken bond, she rises to claim what was never meant to be hers: his pack.

Chapter 2

Kairi sat in the dark office long after the recording ended. Her hand rested on her belly. The pup kicked once, then settled. She didn't move.

The rage that had exploded through her chest an hour ago had transformed into something colder. Sharper. It didn't burn—it carved. Her wolf prowled beneath her skin, restless and furious, but no longer chaotic. Focused.

*They think we're weak,* the wolf growled again.

Kairi pressed her palm harder against her belly. "We're not," she whispered aloud. Her voice sounded strange in the empty room. Steady. "And we're going to prove it."

The wolf answered with something that felt like satisfaction. Like recognition.

For the first time in her life, Kairi could feel her wolf as a separate presence—not an extension of herself, but a partner. A voice that had its own name, its own fury, its own clarity.

"Kaia," she said softly. The name came to her fully formed, as though it had always been there waiting. "Your name is Kaia."

The wolf stilled. Then surged forward with approval so fierce it made Kairi's breath catch.

*Yes. And we don't break. We plan.*

Kairi's fingers found the pendant at her throat. She didn't rip it off. She didn't throw it across the room. She simply held it, feeling its weight, cataloguing the lie it represented.

She would wear it. She would smile at Liam. She would play the role he expected—the weak, late-blooming Luna who would accept her rejection quietly when the time came.

And while he believed that performance, she would dismantle him piece by piece.

By the time the first pale light touched the windows, Kairi had made her list. Not on paper—nothing that could be found. She held it in her mind, each item precise and immovable.

First: her mother.

Second: evidence.

Third: allies.

She logged out of the terminal, erased her access history with the efficiency Liam had taught her during Luna training, and walked upstairs to shower. When Liam returned from wherever he'd actually been, she would be in bed, one hand on her belly, looking exactly like the exhausted pregnant Luna he expected to find.

She didn't have to fake the exhaustion. She was bone-tired. But beneath the fatigue, something new hummed in her chest. Purpose. Her wolf's presence wrapped around her like armor.

Liam came home just after dawn. She heard his footsteps on the stairs, the familiar rhythm of his movements as he undressed and slipped into bed beside her. His arm draped across her waist. His scent—pine and leather—filled the space between them.

Kairi kept her breathing even. Slow. She let him think she was asleep.

His hand rested on her belly for a moment. The pup kicked against his palm. He pulled away almost immediately, rolling onto his back.

"Good," he muttered under his breath. Too quiet for a human to hear. Not quiet enough for a she-wolf whose senses had just sharpened into something lethal. "Almost there."

Kairi's wolf snarled silently. Kairi pressed her lips together and did not move.

She waited until Liam's breathing deepened into sleep. Then she rose carefully, dressed in the dim light, and went downstairs to the small office. She pulled out her phone—the personal one, not the Luna line—and composed a message in the old Moonveil pack script her mother had taught her years ago.

It was a language Liam had never learned. He'd dismissed it as outdated, unnecessary. "We speak modern English in Silverfang," he'd said once, waving off her suggestion that he might want to study it. "No need for old pack dialects."

Kairi had learned it anyway. Nia had insisted.

Now she understood why.

The message was brief. Clinical. *Evidence confirmed. Timeline clear. Need your eyes. Come when you can. Don't call first.*

She sent it. Deleted the message thread. Cleared her phone's cache.

Then she made breakfast.

Liam came downstairs two hours later, freshly showered, his Alpha aura filling the kitchen. He kissed her forehead. "You're up early."

"Couldn't sleep," Kairi said. She set a plate in front of him—eggs, toast, the way he liked it. "The pup was restless."

He glanced at her belly, then back at his plate. "You should rest more. The delivery's only a few weeks away."

"I know." She poured him coffee. Her hands were steady. "I'll take it easy today."

He nodded, already scrolling through messages on his phone. Distracted. Confident.

Kairi sat across from him, one hand on her belly, and sipped her tea. She watched him eat. Watched him check his phone. Watched him exist in the certainty that she was exactly what he believed her to be.

Weak. Dependent. Unaware.

Her wolf growled softly.

*Let him think it,* Kaia whispered. *Let him think it right up until the moment we take everything.*

Kairi's fingers brushed the pendant. She smiled at Liam when he glanced up.

"What?" he asked.

"Nothing," she said. "Just happy."

He smiled back—brief, performative—and returned to his phone.

Two days later, Nia arrived.

She didn't call ahead. She simply appeared at the pack house door just after sunset, carrying a single weathered bag and the kind of stillness that made younger wolves instinctively step aside.

Kairi opened the door. Their eyes met.

Nia stepped inside without a word. She set her bag down. She looked at Kairi—really looked, the way only a mother could—and her expression didn't change.

"Where is he?" Nia asked.

"Border patrol," Kairi said. The lie Liam had used so many times now felt like ash in her mouth. "He'll be back late."

Nia nodded once. She walked through the pack house with the assessing gaze of a warrior cataloguing exits and sightlines. She paused at the office door, glanced at the terminal, then looked back at Kairi.

"You have the recordings?"

"Yes."

"The timestamps?"

"Yes."

"Witnesses?"

Kairi hesitated. "Not yet. But I know who to ask."

Nia set her jaw. She crossed the room and gripped Kairi's shoulders—not gently, but not unkindly. Her eyes were fierce. Unyielding.

"Three questions," Nia said. "Answer me true."

Kairi nodded.

"Do you want him back?"

"No."

"Do you want revenge?"

Kairi's wolf surged forward. "Yes."

Nia's mouth curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Do you want to win?"

"Yes," Kairi said. Her voice didn't waver. "I want everything."

Nia released her shoulders. She picked up her bag and walked toward the guest room.

"Good," she said over her shoulder. "We start tonight."
