Chapter 2

I don't remember the drive.

I remember Mrs. Ford's voice, gentle as a weather report. I remember the taste of copper in my mouth from biting the inside of my cheek so I wouldn't make a sound. I remember stepping around Kohen the way you step around a sleeping animal, careful not to wake it into something worse. And then I was in my car, and then I was on the back road that cuts through the north ridge, and then I was pulling up to the little cabin at the edge of Ironveil territory that no one but Elara knew existed.

I didn't turn on the lights. I sat on the couch in my green dress with dried blood between my fingers and I let the dark hold me.

I didn't cry. I kept waiting for it to come, that ugly breaking-open thing I'd seen other women do, and it didn't. What came instead was quieter and colder. It settled in my chest the way ice settles on still water—slow, thickening, final.

I watched the clock on the wall. When the minute hand had crawled all the way around once, I picked up my phone.

"Declan."

"On my way."

That was it. No questions. No where are you. He had the coordinates already. He'd probably had them for years.

He arrived in twenty-eight minutes. I know because I was still watching the clock. When he pushed through the door he was carrying a leather satchel I'd never seen before, and his face was the face I remembered from the old years—the tactical one, the one that meant he had already run the room in his head before he entered it.

He took one look at my hand and set the satchel down.

"Kitchen," he said.

"It's fine."

"Kitchen, Ivy."

I followed him. He ran the cold water and held my wrist under it and cleaned the bite with a steadiness I couldn't have managed on myself. His jaw was locked so tight I could hear his teeth grinding, but he didn't say a word about it. He wrapped my hand in gauze from a kit he pulled out of a drawer I didn't know had a kit in it.

"How long have you been stocking this house?" I asked.

"Three years."

I looked at him. He didn't look back.

"Sit down," he said. "Marcus is fifteen minutes out."

"You called Marcus."

"I called Marcus the second I saw the package arrive at the pack house door this morning. I couldn't open it. I hoped I was wrong." His voice was flat. "I wasn't wrong."

I sat.

He unbuckled the satchel and laid the documents out on the kitchen table in the same forensic order I would have used myself. The Luna Compact, the original, ink faded at the edges where I'd signed it five years ago in a ceremony I'd believed in. Beneath it, three sealed archive folders stamped with Ironveil's insignia—records I hadn't asked him to pull, records he'd already pulled.

"Financial audits?" I said.

"Going back thirty-eight months. She's been draining accounts under six different vendor names. I couldn't prove routing until last spring. I've been sitting on it."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He finally looked at me then, and something in his face moved that I didn't want to look at directly. "Because you would have told me it was your problem to handle, and you would have handled it alone, and it would have killed you."

I didn't answer. He was right, and we both knew he was right, and there was no version of this conversation where I got to be angry about it.

I stood up. Walked to the bedroom. Knelt by the closet and pulled out the locked metal box I'd carried from house to house for five years without ever opening in front of another wolf. I brought it back to the kitchen and set it on the table between us.

Declan's eyes moved from the box to my face.

"Salazar," I said.

"Ivy."

"The originals. Never destroyed. Never filed as satisfied on his end—only on mine." I turned the key. The lid opened on yellowed paper and a wax seal the color of dried blood. "I don't know why I kept them. I told myself it was habit. I'm going to stop lying to myself tonight."

Headlights swept the front window. A car door. Marcus Reid came through the door without knocking, his silver hair damp from the night mist, his old wool coat still buttoned. He looked at the papers on the table. He looked at me. He looked at the bandage on my hand.

"Show me the infidelity clause," he said.

We worked at the table until the sky outside the window began to gray. Marcus read every line aloud in his slow, deliberate voice, the way he'd read it aloud at my mating ceremony five years ago, and this time I listened to what I'd actually signed. The clause was there. Ironclad. Alpha bloodright reverts, sole and undivided, upon proven infidelity witnessed by a pack elder. Marcus was the elder. The proof was on my phone, on Declan's audit sheets, in the scent-marked blouse still sitting in my car.

Marcus signed the reversion. Declan signed as Beta witness. I signed last, and my hand did not shake.

"It's done," Marcus said quietly. "On paper. The rest is timing."

I looked at Salazar's contracts, still open on the table. "How long do you need to draft the reinstatement?"

Declan's mouth moved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Give me forty-eight hours."

Outside, the first birds were starting. I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck without meaning to, and this time the burn there felt different. Not aching. Waiting.
