Chapter 2

Madison circled me like a predator, her silver heels clicking against the marble floor with each deliberate step. The crowd had formed a perfect circle around us, their faces alight with cruel anticipation. I remained perfectly still, my expression carefully blank despite the rage building inside me.

"Look at her," Madison sneered, gesturing at me with a manicured hand. "So plain, so... unremarkable. I've seen her wolf form, you know. Small, dull brown coat—nothing special. Certainly not worthy of a Beta like Dylan."

Laughter rippled through the crowd. I caught sight of Alpha Carter standing at the edge of the gathering, his expression uncomfortable but making no move to intervene.

"Is it true, Aria?" a female voice called out. "Did you really think you could keep a man like Dylan satisfied?"

More laughter, crueler this time.

"Her wolf probably can't even hunt properly," another added. "I heard she failed basic training three times."

The lies stung, but not because they were true. They stung because I had crafted them myself—carefully constructed rumors I'd spread over the years to maintain my cover as an unremarkable, borderline Omega wolf. The perfect disguise for a Royal Guard on an undercover mission.

Madison stopped directly in front of me, her icy blue eyes gleaming with triumph. "Nothing to say for yourself? No tears? No begging?"

I met her gaze steadily. "What would you have me say?"

My calm response seemed to irritate her. She wanted a scene—tears, screaming, collapse. The composed woman before her wasn't following the script.

"Dylan," Madison called, extending her hand without taking her eyes off me. "Come here, darling."

Dylan stepped forward, taking Madison's hand with a confidence I'd never seen in him before. For five years, I'd supported him financially, listened to his complaints, endured his growing disrespect—all to maintain my cover. Now he stood before me, chin lifted, looking down at me as if I were nothing.

"I want this done now," he announced loudly. "A formal rejection ceremony. Tonight."

Gasps and excited whispers filled the room. Rejection ceremonies were rare and typically private affairs—not public spectacles.

"And if you refuse," Dylan continued, his voice hardening, "I'll have Alpha Carter exile you as an Omega. You'll have nothing—no pack, no home, no protection."

I tilted my head slightly, studying him. "You seem to have thought of everything."

"We've been planning this for months," he admitted, his arm sliding around Madison's waist. "It's time I claimed the mate I truly deserve."

I nodded slowly, feeling my wolf stir within me. For years, I'd kept her subdued, her true power hidden beneath layers of careful control. Tonight, she was dangerously close to breaking free.

*Patience,* I told her. *Not yet.*

"Very well," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent hall. "I accept the rejection ceremony."

Dylan blinked, clearly surprised by my easy acquiescence. Madison's triumphant smile faltered slightly.

"But know this," I continued, my voice dropping to a tone that made several nearby wolves step back instinctively. "There is always a price for betrayal. Always."

For just a moment, uncertainty flickered in Dylan's eyes. Then Madison squeezed his hand, and his arrogance returned.

"Empty threats from a powerless wolf," Madison laughed, though the sound was slightly forced. "Prepare the ceremony circle!"

As the pack members rushed to arrange the formal rejection setting, I closed my eyes briefly, sending a carefully coded mind-link message—a signal I'd hoped never to use.

*Code Nightshade. Royal Guard Aria Blackwood. Cover compromised. Moonveil Pack House. Send immediate extraction team.*

I opened my eyes to find Madison watching me curiously.

"What was that?" she asked, suspicion coloring her tone.

"Just saying goodbye," I replied softly, "to the life I never wanted."

Across the room, several of the more sensitive wolves suddenly lifted their heads, nostrils flaring as they sensed something—a shift in the air, a change in my aura that I was no longer bothering to conceal.

The trap Madison and Dylan had so carefully set was about to snap shut—but not on the prey they had intended.
