Chapter 4

The door banged open at noon.

Esteban marched in. His long black wool coat flapped behind him. His face was flushed red, his jaw tight as iron. He didn't look at the IV pole beside me. He didn't look at the pale color of my skin, or the dark circles under my eyes. He didn't ask if I had survived the surgery.

He came straight to the foot of my bed.

"You killed it," he snarled. His voice was raw with fury. "You killed my child!"

I sat propped up against two stiff hospital pillows. The plastic needle in the back of my hand still ached. Inside, my body felt empty and hollowed out. But for the first time in ten years, my mind was dead calm.

"Your child?" I asked. My voice barely rose above a whisper.

He gripped the footboard until his knuckles turned white. "Ten years, Hadley! Ten years we spent trying! And you flush it away because of a nervous breakdown? Because you were having paranoid delusions? You had no right!"

He sounded like a landlord whose favorite building had burned down. He was angry about lost property.

I reached over to the rolling tray beside the mattress. My fingers picked up a thick manila envelope.

"Take a look," I said.

I didn't hand it to him politely. I flung it straight at his chest.

The flap was open. High-resolution glossy photos and printed lab sheets burst into the air. They fluttered like heavy snowflakes, smacking against his expensive suit before scattering across the sterile linoleum floor.

Esteban flinched. He looked down, scowling. His shoe was resting on the edge of a color printout.

It was a still frame from the cryo-storage security camera. September 12th. 6:14 AM.

Araya’s delicate hands were clearly visible, peeling the paper label off a glass vial.

Right next to his other shoe lay the DNA paternity pre-screening report from the lab. The bold black text at the bottom was impossible to miss.

*Biological Mother: Araya Morales. Biological Father: Esteban Carroll. Zero percent genetic relation to Hadley Spencer.*

Esteban froze.

His mouth opened slightly. Nothing came out.

The heavy, arrogant air vanished from his chest in a split second. His eyes darted from the photos to the floor, then back to my face. The silence in the room was suffocating.

For the first time in our entire marriage, Esteban Carroll didn't have a single word to say.

"I know," I said quietly. "I know everything."

I reached out and pulled the rolling tray closer over my lap. On top of it lay two crisp white pages. Freya’s attorney had rushed them over three hours ago while the hospital anesthesia was still fading from my veins.

I set a black pen next to the paper.

"Sign it," I said.

Esteban stared at the bold letters at the top: *PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.*

The shock drained from his face. What took its place was pure, poisonous anger. The humiliation of being caught stripped away his smooth charm.

His jaw worked. His right hand went straight to his left wrist, frantically straightening his silver cufflink.

There it was. His tell.

He did it whenever he lied, and he did it whenever he was cornered. For ten years, I had thought it was just a polished, elegant habit. Now I saw it for what it truly was. Fear.

He snatched the pen off the tray.

"You think you’re teaching me a lesson?" he hissed, leaning over the metal rail. He pressed the pen down with so much vicious force that the tip ripped through the paper as he scribbled his name. "You think you have power here?"

He threw the pen against the wall. It hit the drywall with a sharp click and bounced onto the floor.

He leaned in closer, his hot breath smelling of expensive mints and sour venom.

"You'll be crawling back to me within six months," he snarled. "You have no job. No network. You gave up your entire life to play house. You’re nothing without the Carroll name, Hadley. Absolutely nothing."

He spun on his heel and stormed out into the hallway. The heavy wooden door clicked shut.

The room was silent again.

Out of ten years of muscle memory, my right hand lifted. It drifted toward the ring finger of my left hand. Whenever Esteban yelled at me, or whenever his mother made a cruel comment at dinner, I had always twisted my platinum diamond band to calm myself down.

Halfway there, my hand stopped.

I looked at my fingers. I pulled my hand back and rested it flat on the cotton blanket.

I didn't touch the ring.

Instead, I slid the platinum band off my finger, dropped it into a disposable paper cup by the pitcher, and turned my face toward the rainy window.

To Esteban, signing that paper wasn't a defeat. It was just quick housekeeping. An annoying chore he crossed off his list before his grand triumph.

The billion-dollar joint venture contract between Carroll Enterprises and Pinnacle Group was only two weeks away. It was the crowning achievement of his career. Wall Street was already buzzing about it. It would cement his place as the head of Manhattan’s elite.

With me out of the way, the masks disappeared entirely.

Araya didn't bother hiding anymore. She moved out of the West Village guest apartment and straight into our penthouse. The timid cardigans and shy, weeping orphan act vanished overnight.

Five days after the divorce papers were signed, Freya sent me a photo from the Carroll Enterprises annual board dinner at the Union League Club.

Esteban stood near the stone fireplace, smiling broadly with a glass of single malt scotch in his hand. Tucked firmly against his side was Araya.

She wore a backless emerald silk gown, her dark hair swept over one shoulder, exposing her bare neck. Her fingers rested openly on Esteban's forearm, showing off a new six-carat yellow diamond on her left hand. She looked directly at the camera with an easy, smug smile.

She wasn't his secret anymore. She was his partner.

Across the room, standing beneath an oil painting of Esteban's grandfather, was Diana Carroll.

Esteban’s mother held her crystal flute with thin, rigid fingers. Her lips were pressed into a tight, pale line. Her cold eyes tracked Araya as the girl laughed too loudly at an older board member's joke.

Diana wasn't angry about the affair. She didn't care that her son had cheated on his wife for a decade, or that my baby had been ripped from me. Morals were irrelevant to Diana Carroll.

What disgusted her was Araya's pedigree.

A penniless ward with no family fortune and no elite bloodline standing as the future matriarch of Carroll Enterprises was an insult to their brand. But Diana kept her mouth shut. The Pinnacle deal was too big to risk a public feud.

In the photograph, Esteban looked like a king who had won every battle. Untouchable. Powerful. Convinced the world belonged to him.

I stared at his smiling face on my phone screen.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel pain.

I deleted the photo, closed my phone, and picked up the strategy files Trace Ramirez had sent to my inbox an hour ago.

Esteban thought the war was over.

He had no idea I was the one holding the match.
