Chapter 2

I stayed in that hospital bed for seven days.

Dr. Vance called it "mandatory rest for emotional stability." It wasn't care. It was a prison sentence Esteban bought to keep me quiet.

The fetal monitor clicked and hummed next to me day and night. *Thump-thump. Thump-thump.* Every beat felt like a needle pressing into my skull.

Esteban visited once an afternoon. He brought white orchids, kissed the top of my head, and patted my blanket.

"The board approved the Pinnacle contract draft today," he told me on day four, adjusting his French cuffs. "Rest up, Hadley. A calm mother makes a healthy heir."

He never stayed more than eight minutes.

Freya didn't bring flowers. She brought Marcus Webb.

Marcus was an ex-NYPD detective who ran a private intelligence firm out of Queens. Freya hired him out of her own pocket the very afternoon she left my room. She didn’t ask me for permission. She didn’t ask for money.

"I have savings," she told me over the phone. "And I have a burning desire to watch your husband bleed."

On the eighth morning, gray rain hit the window.

The door opened. Freya walked in, shaking wet drops from her black trench coat. Her eyes were rimmed in red, but her jaw was set like stone. Under her arm, she carried a thick black binder.

She walked past the orchids, pulled my rolling tray over my lap, and dropped the binder onto it.

The heavy *thud* rattled my water glass.

"Marcus finished," Freya said. Her voice was terrifyingly calm. "Read it."

I looked at the black leather cover. My fingers were cold. I opened the first tab.

It was a financial breakdown. Wire transfers. Account numbers. Offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands.

Marcus had traced money from Esteban’s private subsidiary accounts. The recipient was an LLC registered in Delaware called *Blue Fern Assets*.

The sole beneficiary of Blue Fern was Araya Morales.

The payments spanned ten straight years. The total made my breath catch in my throat. Fourteen point two million dollars.

"The first wire went through sixty days after your wedding," Freya said, leaning against the metal bed frame. "He bought her a Cartier diamond watch for your two-month anniversary."

I turned the page.

There was a lease agreement. A two-bedroom penthouse on Perry Street in the West Village. Twelve thousand dollars a month, paid annually in advance by Carroll Enterprises as a "corporate guest facility."

The doorman logs listed only one permanent resident: Araya Morales.

The visitor logs showed Esteban Carroll checking in three to four nights every single week.

"Keep going," Freya whispered. Her hand rested on my shoulder. It was tight, almost painful. "Marcus pulled her cloud data."

I turned the divider. Glossy color screenshots filled the plastic sleeves.

It was an Instagram profile under a private burner handle: *@Velvet_A*.

The bio read: *Waiting for what belongs to me.*

I looked at the photos.

The first was from three years ago. A close-up of a wrist wearing a stunning sapphire-and-diamond cuff. I remembered that bracelet. Esteban had shown it to me after an auction, claiming it was bought on behalf of an anonymous corporate client.

Araya’s caption read: *He knows what I like. 💎*

I flipped the page. My chest went tight.

It was a video frame grab. The background was unmistakably the master bathroom of our penthouse. The marble tub was filled with rose petals. On the hook behind the glass door hung Esteban’s navy silk robe, his initials embroidered in gold thread on the breast pocket.

The timestamp was August 14th of last year.

I remembered that day with sickening clarity. That was the morning of my third egg retrieval. I had spent six hours in surgery, bleeding and cramping in a recovery room, waiting for Esteban to pick me up. He had texted me saying an emergency board meeting had run late.

He hadn't been in a boardroom. He had been in our bed.

The next printout was from our tenth wedding anniversary last month.

I had waited at home with a cooked roast while Esteban called to say he was stuck reviewing financial audits in Boston.

The photo showed two crystal glasses touching on the balcony of the West Village apartment, overlooking the Hudson River.

The caption was short.

*Ten years down. Patience is a virtue. Soon, I get the house too. 😘*

I stared at the screen capture.

I didn't cry. My hands didn't shake anymore. A strange, dead coldness spread from my fingers all the way down into my stomach.

The fetal monitor kept playing its steady rhythm beside the bed. *Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

For ten years, I had thought I was a partner. I had thought we were building an empire together. I had given up my seat at the executive table because his mother told me a Carroll wife belonged in the drawing room, not the boardroom. I had smiled at society lunches, swallowed my pride, and let my own dreams gather dust in a closet.

I had pitied Araya. I had made soup for her when she had the flu. I had held her hands when she cried about being an orphan.

It was never a secret fling. It was never a moment of drunken weakness.

It was an entire architecture. A quiet, vicious life built directly on top of my blind trust.

They had laughed at me. Every single day for ten years, they had looked at my face, eaten my food, and laughed.

"Hadley?" Freya’s voice cracked slightly. "Say something."

I closed the black binder slowly. The plastic sleeves clicked together.

I looked up at the sterile ceiling tiles, then down at my swollen stomach.

"Call Marcus back," I said. My voice sounded completely different. It was level, dry, and cold as iron. "Tell him to pull the clinic records."
