Chapter 5

Brantley waited until after dinner. He always did his worst work after I'd cooked for him.

He set his fork down with that careful precision that meant he'd rehearsed this, pushed his plate back an inch, and folded his hands on the table like we were about to discuss mortgage refinancing.

"Sky, we need to talk."

I kept eating. "Okay."

"I've been patient. You know I have." He paused, waiting for me to agree. I didn't. "But this situation with Sasha—it's gone on too long. If you don't transfer the funds by end of week, I'm going to have to involve lawyers. I don't want to. But she's threatening to sue, and that means I'd have to file for divorce to protect my assets from the judgment."

He said it like it hurt him. Like he was the victim of my stubbornness.

I set my fork down. Looked at him across six years of marriage and saw a stranger wearing a face I used to kiss goodnight. "I understand."

"You do?" Relief flooded his expression. "Good. That's—I'm glad you're being reasonable about this."

"I said I'd handle it Friday. I will."

He reached across the table and squeezed my hand. His palm was warm. I felt nothing.

After he went to bed, I started moving things.

My grandmother's jewelry first—the sapphire earrings, the pearl strand, the garnet brooch she wore to my college graduation. I wrapped each piece in tissue paper and placed them in a small lockbox I'd bought that afternoon at Target. Then my laptop. My birth certificate. The deed to a small parcel of land my father left me that Brantley had never bothered to ask about. Every document with my name on it that mattered.

I carried the box to my car in two trips, setting it in the trunk under the emergency blanket where it looked like nothing at all. Then I drove to Diana's apartment and left half of it with her, stacked neatly in her hall closet behind the winter coats.

"You're scaring me a little," Diana said, watching me work.

"Don't be scared. Be ready."

She nodded. She didn't ask what for.

Brantley cornered me Wednesday morning while I was brushing my teeth.

"I've scheduled a community meeting," he said to my reflection in the mirror. "Saturday afternoon. Two o'clock. In the courtyard."

I rinsed, spat, wiped my mouth. "A meeting."

"To mediate the ring dispute. Openly. Sasha thinks it would help if everyone could hear both sides, and honestly, I agree. It's the fairest way to handle this."

I turned to face him. "Who's 'everyone'?"

"Neighbors. Gerald from the HOA. A few people who've been concerned. It's not a trial, Sky. It's just—transparency. So no one can say we didn't try to work this out like adults."

A public tribunal. He was going to shame me into compliance in front of the entire neighborhood, with witnesses and social pressure and Sasha's practiced tears. He probably thought it was brilliant.

"Okay," I said. "I'll be there."

His eyebrows lifted. "You will?"

"I'll bring the checkbook."

The relief on his face was so complete, so unguarded, that I almost pitied him. Almost.

"Thank you," he said, and kissed my cheek like I'd just agreed to pick up his dry cleaning.

I spent the next three days preparing.

Thursday morning, I met with the attorney Diana had recommended—a sharp-eyed woman named Caroline Voss who listened to everything I had, asked three clarifying questions, and told me it was admissible, actionable, and more than enough.

"You're sure you want to do this publicly?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Then do it clean. No emotion. Just evidence."

I nodded. I'd been doing nothing but evidence for weeks.

Friday at midnight, I walked to the courtyard alone. The outdoor event screen—the one the HOA used for movie nights and holiday messages—stood dark against the far wall. I pulled out my phone, opened Bluetooth settings, and watched the screen flicker to life. It connected on the first try.

I played a test video. A cooking tutorial. It filled the screen in perfect clarity, sound and all.

I disconnected, turned everything off, and walked home in the dark.

Saturday morning, I laid everything out on my bed.

Two cubic zirconia rings in their Amazon packaging. The receipt, printed and highlighted. The small rubber-grip hammer I'd ordered, weight tested in my palm twice already. I placed them all in a zippered makeup bag and set the bag in my purse.

I didn't rehearse what I'd say. I didn't need to. The evidence would speak.

I showered, dressed in jeans and a simple blouse—nothing that looked like I was performing—and made myself breakfast. Toast. Coffee. An apple I ate standing at the counter.

Brantley was already gone. He'd left early to 'set up,' which meant he and Sasha were probably arranging chairs and practicing their speeches.

I washed my plate. Dried it. Put it away.

Then I picked up my purse, checked the weight of it one last time, and walked out the door.

The courtyard was two minutes away. I took five, letting the sun warm my shoulders, letting my heartbeat settle into something slow and steady.

I wasn't afraid.

I'd been afraid for weeks—afraid of the truth, afraid of what it meant, afraid of the woman I'd have to become to survive it.

But I wasn't afraid anymore.

I was ready.
