Chapter 1

My phone buzzed at 3:33 AM.

I reached for it in the dark. Malcolm slept beside me with his back turned, like always. The city glowed through the penthouse windows, cold and blue.

Unknown number.

*Malcolm never loved you. He loves Valery Hoffman. He married you to manipulate his grandfather. If you don't leave, you'll lose your baby, lose your mind, and die alone in a psychiatric ward. This is you — ten years from now.*

I almost laughed. A prank. Some bored socialite who hated the butcher's daughter from Queens who married Malcolm Crawford.

Then a second line appeared.

*You call him Bishop when you're alone, because he cheats at chess. He keeps a black journal in the hidden pocket of his briefcase. You've never read it.*

My hands started shaking. Nobody knew about Bishop. Not even Malcolm's family. And the journal... I had found it once, months ago. I'd zipped the pocket closed and told no one.

*Baby.* I pressed a palm to my stomach. I was four days late. I hadn't told anyone that either.

I didn't sleep again.

---

At breakfast, Malcolm read the *Journal* and drank his black coffee. Perfect suit. Perfect hair. Three years married, and he still looked like a magazine cover.

I buttered his toast the way he liked it. Then I said it, light as air.

"Who's Valery Hoffman?"

He didn't look up. But the page didn't turn either. One second. Maybe less.

His thumb found his wedding ring and rolled it slowly around his finger.

"Where did you hear that name?"

"Someone mentioned her. At the salon."

His jaw went tight, just at the hinge. Then he smiled. "My old tutor. Nobody important, sweetheart. Don't worry about it."

*Don't worry about it.* He said that a lot. I had always heard it as kindness.

This morning, it sounded like a door closing.

"Okay," I said. I smiled back. And I watched him the way my grandfather taught me to watch a man across a card table.

---

The next night, 3:33 AM again.

*He's meeting her tonight. 53rd and Park, private room, second floor. The diamond pendant around her neck is the one from Tiffany's you admired six months ago. The one he said was "too extravagant for everyday wear."*

Malcolm told me he had a late dinner with investors.

I wore the red dress he liked. I don't know why. Maybe I still wanted to be wrong.

The restaurant was all dark wood and low gold light. I climbed the stairs. The door at the end of the hall was cracked open an inch.

I looked.

A woman sat by the window. Older than me. Pale silk blouse, no logos, hair in a loose knot. Elegant in that quiet way money can't fake.

Malcolm stood behind her. He lifted a chain from a blue velvet box. The diamond caught the candlelight. I knew that teardrop shape. I had stood at the counter and touched the glass.

He fastened it at her neck. His fingers lingered on her skin.

And his face... I had never seen it like that. Soft. Open. Almost scared, like he was holding something holy.

He had never once looked at me that way.

I stepped back. My heel hit the floor too loud. I turned and walked fast down the hall, and rounded the corner straight into a wall of dark suits.

Grandfather Crawford.

He stood in the center of his men, silver-haired, his ebony cane gripped in one spotted hand. His eyes moved from me to the private room door.

"Spying," he said. "How very fitting for a girl from a meat counter."

"I wasn't—"

The cane whipped across my shin.

Pain shot up white and hot. My knees hit the carpet. I couldn't breathe.

The door opened behind me.

Malcolm stepped out. He saw me on the floor. He saw his grandfather standing over me with the cane still raised.

He put his hands in his pockets.

He didn't say a word.

Valery appeared at his shoulder. She touched her collarbone, right where the diamond sat, and her brown eyes filled with gentle worry.

"Oh, Malcolm," she murmured. "Is she all right? Poor thing. This must be so hard for her."

Nobody helped me up. I got up on my own.

---

That night, I locked myself in the penthouse bathroom. Marble everywhere. So clean. So expensive. So cold.

My shin had swollen purple. Mascara ran down my face in two black lines. The red dress lay on the floor like a dead thing.

My phone lit up on the counter.

*Now you know. The charity gala is next. He'll humiliate you in front of all of New York. It only gets worse after that. Don't make my mistakes.*

I stared at the woman in the mirror. Swollen eyes. Split lip from biting it too hard.

Is this where you end up? Ten years. A locked ward. Alone.

She stared back. She didn't answer.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand. Then I straightened my spine, shoulders back, chin level. The posture I'd spent three years pretending I never learned.

I scrolled to a number I hadn't dialed since my wedding day. A Las Vegas area code.

It rang once.

"Thomas Reyes." Deep voice. Fully awake, even at this hour.

"It's Lillie."

A long pause. I heard him sit up.

"Miss Mendez," he said carefully. "Your grandfather has been waiting a long time for this call."

Outside, a siren wailed across Manhattan and faded. Down the hall, Malcolm's phone buzzed. I heard him laugh softly. Not for me.

"I need divorce papers drafted," I said quietly. "In absolute secrecy."

"Understood. Anything else?"

I touched my stomach. Then I looked at the bruise.

"Not yet," I said. "But soon."
