Chapter 1

Rain poured down the back of my neck. My delivery jacket was soaked through.

I climbed the four flights of stairs to my studio apartment, my knees aching with every step. Inside, the radiator hissed a dry, metallic rattle. I pulled out my phone. The screen was badly cracked. I tapped the delivery app to close my shift. Two dollars in tips on twelve orders.

I sat down at the wobbly plywood table. On the corner lay a discarded copy of the local business section. I didn't mean to read it, but old habits die hard. My eyes scanned the numbers and stock charts, calculating market volatility in seconds.

My right thumb tapped against my index finger. One, two, three, four. It was an old reflex from the trading floor. A counting rhythm I used to steady my breathing before placing multi-million-dollar bets.

Now, I rode an electric bike in the rain for loose change.

I reached into my inner jacket pocket and touched the folded paper. It was a photograph of my father, Ford. He was smiling outside his university office, sharp and whole, taken right before my conviction six years ago.

This was freedom. Just a smaller cage with no lock, and nowhere to go.

A sudden knock rattled the thin door.

I froze. Nobody visited me. I walked over and pulled it open.

Bryce Lawson stood in the dingy hallway. He wore a tailored charcoal cashmere coat. In his hands, he held a massive bouquet of fresh white peonies.

My stomach churned. Peonies were my mother’s favorite flower. He knew that. He used it like a blade.

"Emmie," he breathed. His voice shook with rehearsed emotion. His eyes glistened with tears. "God, Em. Look at you."

"What do you want, Bryce?" My voice was dead flat.

He stepped closer, offering the flowers. "I’ve spent every night since your release looking for you. Losing you was the greatest mistake of my life. I know you hate me. You have every right to. But let me fix this. Let me take care of you."

He paused, letting his chin tremble. He had always been a master of timing.

"Get out," I said.

His face fell into wounded grace. He didn't push. Instead, he gently set the peonies on my welcome mat.

"I'm not giving up on us, Emmie," he whispered.

He walked down the stairs. I closed the door, locked it, and left the flowers outside to rot.

Over the next four days, he circled like a predator.

His black town car parked across the street from my building every morning. Expensive groceries and silk blankets appeared at my door. Then my delivery dispatcher called me into the back office with a grin, telling me my "devoted husband" had dropped off coffee and asked for my shift routes to make sure I was safe.

Bryce was squeezing the air out of my life, piece by piece. Every intrusion wrapped in the sickening disguise of devotion.

On Friday morning, the knock came again.

It wasn't Bryce.

Paulina Dixon stood on the threshold. She wore a camel hair coat and smelled heavily of jasmine perfume. She smiled, her eyes crinkling with sweet concern.

"Hi, Em," she said. She pushed right past me into the room. "Charming place. Very minimalist."

"Get out, Paulina."

She ignored me. She reached into her designer bag, pulled out a manila folder, and dropped it onto the table.

It fell open.

My breath caught in my throat.

Photographs spilled across the bare wood. They were pictures of my father. He was strapped into a wheelchair in a dim room. His hair was greasy and overgrown. His cheeks were sunken, his skin pale as paper, his eyes completely vacant. Dark bruises ringed his frail wrists from cloth restraints.

"He's deteriorating so fast at Whispering Pines," Paulina sighed. She leaned against my counter, buffing a manicured nail. "Bryce pays for his private room, you know. But that level of care is terribly expensive."

She placed a thick document and a sleek pen next to the photos.

"What is this?" I asked. My throat felt raw.

"An employment contract," Paulina said sweetly. "Personal assistant to the CEO of Lawson Capital. Full-time. You move back into the harbor estate. You manage his life. If you sign, your father keeps his doctors. If you refuse..." She tilted her head, her smile turning razor-sharp. "Bryce transfers him to a state facility by tonight. You know how those places are, Em. Confused old men fall in the showers. Nobody notices for days."

My thumb tapped violently against my index finger. One, two, three, four.

I looked down at Dad's hollow, drugged eyes.

I picked up the pen and signed my name.

That evening, a car brought me to the waterfront estate. The massive glass-and-stone house sat against the dark Puget Sound, cold and imposing.

Bryce opened the double doors himself. He pulled me into a tight embrace. "Welcome home, Em," he murmured into my hair.

I kept my arms pinned stiffly at my sides.

He stepped back and smiled at the two maids standing in the foyer. "Show Ms. Crawford to the ground-floor suite. Make sure she has everything she needs."

He led me down the polished hall to a room on the lower level. It was spotless, decorated in cream linens, with a wide glass view of the gray harbor. A golden cage.

Bryce lingered by the doorway. His fingers reached down and compulsively straightened his cufflinks—a nervous tic he always had when he fought for control.

"Your duties start tomorrow at six," he said, his smooth voice turning crisp. "My schedule. My wardrobe. My home office. Total availability, twenty-four hours a day. I need you close, Em. Right where you belong."

"Understood, Mr. Lawson," I said.

A flash of annoyance crossed his face, but he masked it with a nod. "Get some rest."

He closed the door.

I stood alone in the quiet room. I checked the heavy lock on the door. I noted the blind spots of the security cameras out on the terrace. I counted the seconds between the guard's patrol footsteps along the perimeter.

He thought he had put me back on a leash.

He forgot that before prison, I spent eight years analyzing complex systems, finding their hidden fractures, and tearing them apart from the inside.
