Chapter 2

They put a hood over my head before the car stopped moving. I didn't fight it. I'd already learned, in the first five minutes, that fighting only made the zip tie bite harder into my wrists.

When they pulled the hood off, I was standing in a room the size of a walk-in closet. Concrete floor. Steel door. A cot bolted to the wall and a bare bulb screwed into the ceiling, burning white and constant, like a little sun that never set.

Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway with his arms crossed. He had the build of a man who used to be a soldier and the face of a man who'd stopped caring what he was ordered to do a long time ago.

"You'll stay here," he said, "until you sign."

"Sign what?"

"The divorce papers." A pause. "And the consent form. For the surgery."

I looked at the bulb. I looked at the cot. I looked at him.

"And if I don't?"

"Then you stay longer." He said it the way someone might tell you the elevator was out of service. No cruelty in it. Just fact.

The door shut. The lock turned. I counted the seconds between the click and the silence that followed — four. I filed that away.

*

The light never went off.

I didn't know if it was day or night. I had no phone, no window, nothing but the hum of a sound system somewhere in the wall that played low static in bursts — twenty minutes on, ten minutes off, just enough to keep me from settling into anything deeper than the shallow edge of sleep.

Every forty minutes, the slot in the door slid open. A pair of eyes. Sometimes water. Sometimes nothing at all.

My mother once told me that panic is a luxury, and that the Aguilars had never been able to afford it. I hadn't understood her then. I understood her now.

So instead of breaking, I counted.

The room was nine feet by six. The cot's frame had a manufacturer's stamp near the leg — *Hendricks Steel, Trenton NJ*. The lock on the door was a Medeco, the kind that took four full turns, which meant it was pickable but not by hand. The guards rotated in threes. I learned their footsteps. Heavy boots at what I guessed was morning. Softer soles later. A limp, faint but consistent, on the third man — an old injury, maybe a knee.

I didn't cry. I catalogued.

Somewhere in the second night — or what I decided to call the second night — I ran my thumb along the inside of my empty left ring finger, the place where a plain platinum band used to sit before Maddox had taken it back "for cleaning" and never returned it. The gesture steadied me. It always had.

*

He came on what Thorne told me was the second day, though I had no real way to know.

The door opened and there he was, filling the frame like he owned it, which I supposed he believed he did. His suit was pressed. His hair was combed. He adjusted his left cufflink, then his right, the same small motion he made before every piece of bad news he'd ever delivered to a boardroom or a wife.

"You look tired," he said. Almost gentle. Almost kind, if you didn't know what gentleness actually sounded like.

I said nothing.

"You should sign, Eleanor. This doesn't have to be hard." He crouched slightly, the way you'd crouch to talk to a child, or a dog. "No one's coming for you. You understand that, don't you?"

I kept my eyes on the bulb.

"You don't have people," he went on. "No family that matters. No name anyone would recognize if they went looking. That's — " he searched for the word, found it, seemed pleased with himself for finding it — "convenient. For me. I'm sorry it isn't for you."

He meant it to cut. I felt it try to cut, felt the old shape of the wound where those words would have landed five years ago, when I still needed him to see me as someone worth keeping. But the wound was old scar tissue now. It didn't open. It just ached, distantly, like weather in a bone that had healed wrong.

Because he was wrong. Spectacularly, catastrophically wrong. There was a woman in Manhattan right now who could dismantle his entire life with one phone call and never raise her voice doing it. There was a sister with five certified copies of a document he had never bothered to read. There was a name — Aguilar — that could make grown men in board meetings stand up a little straighter, and he had been sleeping next to it for five years without once asking what it was worth.

He thought my silence was defeat.

I ran my thumb across the bare place on my finger and said nothing at all, and he took my silence, folded it up, and put it in his pocket like a man who believed he'd already won.

He left satisfied. That was the mistake that would cost him everything.
