Chapter 4

The door opened on what I guessed was the fifth day, though time had started to bend in that windowless room. Maddox stepped inside, and something in his posture made me sit up straighter on the cot. He looked different. The frantic energy of the man who'd come to me before was gone. In its place was something almost serene, the calm of someone who had made his final decision and felt the weight lift from his shoulders.

He crouched in front of me, close enough that I could smell his cologne — the same one he wore to board meetings, the same one he'd worn when he told me he loved me for the first time. His eyes were clear. His hands were steady. He adjusted his left cufflink, then his right. One smooth motion.

"Eleanor," he said, and my name sounded different in his mouth now, like he was already speaking to a ghost. "I've made arrangements."

I said nothing. I'd learned that silence was the only weapon I had left.

"The consent question is no longer relevant," he continued. "I've arranged a private surgical team. The facility is on the Upper East Side. Very discreet. Very clean." He paused, studying my face for a reaction. I gave him nothing. "The procedure will happen whether you agree or not. Afterward, I'll give you a clean divorce. You can disappear. Start over somewhere else."

His voice was gentle. Reasonable. The voice of a man who believed he was being generous.

"You should be grateful," he said. "Most people in your position wouldn't get the chance to walk away at all."

I looked at his hands. They were the same hands that had once held mine across a folding table in our first apartment, the same hands that had shaken with excitement when his first investor called. Now they were steady as stone as he planned to cut me open and take a piece of me away.

"Maddox," I said. My voice was rough from disuse. "Do you remember the apartment above the laundromat?"

His expression flickered. For just a moment, something crossed his face — confusion, maybe, or the ghost of an old feeling he'd forgotten he'd ever had.

"That was a long time ago," he said.

"You used to chew the end of your pen when you worked. You still have that habit."

He stood up abruptly. "This isn't productive, Eleanor. We leave in an hour."

As he turned to go, I caught his sleeve. He looked down at my hand on his arm like it was something distasteful, but I didn't let go.

"Marcus," I said, looking past Maddox to where Thorne stood in the doorway. He stepped forward, his face impassive. "Can I speak with you?"

Maddox hesitated, then nodded once. "Make it quick."

He stepped outside. The door didn't close all the way. I could see him standing in the hallway, his back to us, already moving on to the next item on his checklist.

Thorne looked down at me. "What?"

I stood up slowly. My legs were weak from days on the cot, but I forced myself to meet his eyes. "I need you to understand something, Marcus. Your salary this year is two hundred and seventy thousand dollars. Your pension fund is managed through Meridian Capital, which is a subsidiary of Aguilar Financial. The equipment budget for your team — the weapons, the vehicles, the surveillance systems — it all traces back to shell companies that my family controls."

His face didn't change, but something shifted in his eyes. A calculation.

"You're saying you're somebody," he said flatly.

"I'm saying you've been working for me for three years without knowing it." I watched him carefully. "My mother knows I'm missing. She'll come for me. And when she does, she'll ask who helped and who didn't."

Three seconds. That's how long he hesitated. Three seconds where I saw the math happen behind his eyes, where I watched him weigh his loyalty to Maddox against the possibility that I was telling the truth. Three seconds where something like fear flickered across his face.

Then he looked away. "We leave in an hour," he said, and stepped back through the door.

I filed that information away like a check I would cash later. Even a moment of hesitation was useful. Even a crack in the foundation was something I could build on.

An hour later, they came for me.

They didn't bother with the hood this time. I was strapped to a gurney, wrists and ankles secured with leather restraints that bit into my skin. The hallway was blindingly bright after days in the dim room. I blinked against the fluorescent lights as they wheeled me toward an elevator.

Outside, the medical transport vehicle was waiting — unmarked, professional, the kind of ambulance that wealthy people paid for when they wanted privacy. The driver didn't look at me as they loaded me in. Thorne sat across from me, his face a mask.

The facility on the Upper East Side looked like any other private medical center — sleek, modern, expensive. But as they wheeled me through the back entrance, past security doors that required key cards and codes, I understood that this place existed entirely off the books.

Dr. Arthur Vance was waiting in the operating room. He was older than I expected, with thinning hair and the careful hands of someone who had once been very good at what he did. Now his eyes held the dull resignation of a man who had made his choice and lived with the consequences.

"Prep her," he said to the two nurses — or people dressed as nurses — who began attaching monitors to my chest and arms. "We'll begin as soon as Mr. Warren confirms."

Through the glass partition, I could see into an adjacent room. Cheyenne sat in a hospital bed, her dark hair framing her pale face. Maddox stood beside her, holding her hand. She was crying — perfect, delicate tears that made her look even more fragile and beautiful. He was whispering something in her ear, his face a mask of protective tenderness.

I looked away. The anesthesiologist approached with a syringe. I felt the sharp sting of the needle in my arm, and as the edges of my vision began to blur, I ran my thumb across the empty place on my finger where the ring used to be.

I wondered if my mother was close enough yet to hear me thinking her name.
