Chapter 3

The Tribeca penthouse felt enormous and cold.

I packed a small overnight bag with clothes and toiletries. My hands were steady.

I sat down on the edge of the king-sized bed and dialed my mother's number.

"Hannah?" Mom answered after three rings. Her voice was fretful, just like always. "Is everything okay? You didn't call on Sunday."

"I'm divorcing Ryan, Mom."

Silence fell over the line. It was heavy and thick.

"Hannah, no," Mom gasped. Her voice climbed an octave. "What are you saying? You can't divorce Ryan!"

"He cheated on me. It's over."

"Men make mistakes!" she rushed out. "You talk to him. You work it out. But what if you can't make it on your own? You're forty-two, Hannah. You haven't worked in twenty years!"

I held the phone away from my ear for a second. The words stung like tiny slaps.

Then I heard rustling, and my father took the phone.

"Mija," Dad said slowly. His tone was deep, heavy with traditional caution. "Listen to your mother. Don't do anything rash. Marriage is hard work. You don't throw away a home over a quarrel."

Neither of them asked what Ryan had done.

Neither of them asked if I was hurting.

Neither of them asked if I was okay.

"I have to go," I whispered.

"Hannah, wait—"

I pressed the red button and ended the call.

I set the phone on the mattress. The silence in the master bedroom came back, pressing hard against my ears. I felt completely isolated. More alone than I had ever been in my life.

Yet beneath the hurt, something shifted. A cold, quiet steel bloomed in my chest.

No one was coming to rescue me. Not my husband. Not my daughter. Not my parents.

If I wanted my life back, I had to take it myself.

Ten minutes later, my phone buzzed. It was Kingston.

"Hannah," he said. His voice was deep and steady, anchoring me instantly. "Jocelyn just flagged something big."

I stood up and walked over to the tall windows. "What did Ryan do?"

"Not Ryan. His father." Kingston paused. I heard the faint rustle of legal documents. "Dawson Williamson stepped in. He hired two corporate defense firms early this morning. They're trying to push forty million dollars in real estate holdings into an offshore family trust."

"Can they hide it?" I asked.

Kingston gave a low, quiet chuckle. It wasn't smug. It was lethal.

"Not a chance. Jocelyn was waiting for a move like that. We filed emergency injunctions with the Manhattan court an hour ago. Every transfer is frozen mid-wire."

"What does that mean for us?"

"It means Dawson made a fatal mistake," Kingston explained. "Under New York law, deliberate asset concealment during a divorce is fraud. Jocelyn is building a complete paper trail. A judge will see it as bad faith. You won't just get fifty percent of those assets, Hannah. You can petition for the whole lot."

"Good," I said. My pulse beat with sharp clarity. "Make them pay for every lie."

"We will," Kingston promised. His tone softened suddenly. "Are you eating? Have you slept at all?"

The gentle care in his voice caught me off guard. My throat tightened.

"I'm fine, Kingston. Thank you."

"I'm right here," he said quietly. "Call me whenever you need."

He hung up, leaving a faint warmth in my chest.

An hour later, my phone pinged with a notification from a Manhattan society blog.

Right after, a text popped up from an acquaintance on my old museum board: *Hannah, have you seen this? Oh my god.*

I tapped the link.

The screen opened to photos of the annual Autumn Arts Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street. It was a high-society event packed with Wall Street elites, politicians, and socialites. People who had smiled at me across dinner tables for fifteen years.

Right in the center of the red carpet was Adalyn Fox.

She wore a plunging black silk gown that hugged every curve. She held a glass of champagne, smirking right at the cameras with bright, insolent eyes. Everleigh wasn't in the frame, but Ryan was standing just a few feet behind her, chatting with an investment banker.

My eyes didn't linger on Adalyn's face.

They dropped straight to her throat.

Resting against her bare collarbone was the teardrop emerald. The delicate platinum filigree sparkled under the harsh flashbulbs, glowing a deep, vivid green.

My grandmother’s necklace.

Half the women at that gala recognized it. They had seen me wear it to charity benefits for a decade.

Now, a twenty-three-year-old girl was parading it in public.

Under the photo, the headline read: *Real Estate Scion Ryan Williamson Steps Out With Stunning New Muse Flaunting Williamson Family Jewels.*

Adalyn wasn't hiding. She wasn't ashamed of sleeping with her best friend's father.

She was declaring victory to all of New York. She wanted the whole city to know she had taken my place.

I stared at the photo for a long, quiet minute.

My hands didn't shake. My breath didn't hitch.

A slow, icy smile curved my lips.

*Enjoy the spotlight, Adalyn,* I thought. *Every picture is just another piece of rope to hang yourself with.*
