Chapter 4

The Hamptons house smelled like salt and money. Someone had lit a fire in the main room. The associates—three men from Caleb's Singapore deal, a woman from his legal team—stood in clusters with their drinks, laughing at the right volume. The kind of laughing that means nothing.

I moved through it easily. I always could. I asked about the Singapore project. I remembered one of the men had a daughter starting at Columbia in the fall, and I asked about her. His face opened up like a window.

Caleb watched me from across the room. I could feel it. The faint satisfaction of a man whose wife is performing correctly. He had wanted me here for the optics. Fine. I was here for the optics.

Paisley was at the bar, pouring herself something amber. She had worn a dress I hadn't seen before—deep green, fitted. She looked good. She knew she looked good.

I drifted over.

"You look relaxed," I said. I kept my voice easy. Warm, even.

She turned, and for a half-second, something flickered behind her eyes. Then the careful smile came back. "I love it out here. The water helps."

"It does." I picked up a glass, just to have something in my hand. "I always thought this house deserved someone who actually wanted to be in it."

She went still.

I let the silence sit for a moment. Then, almost to myself: "It's just the paperwork, really. That's the only thing that's still—" I shook my head lightly. "It doesn't matter."

"What paperwork?" Her voice was careful. Controlled.

I looked at her like I was deciding whether to say it. "The legal piece. The separation agreement. Once that's signed, everything else just—" I made a small gesture with my hand. "Resolves."

Her eyes moved to Caleb across the room.

"He'd sign it tonight if he were relaxed enough," I said. Almost offhand. Almost bored. "You know how he gets when he's had a few. Generous. Easy." I picked up my drink. "Anyway. It's not your problem."

I walked away.

I did not look back.

---

Paisley spent the rest of the evening at Caleb's elbow.

I watched her work from a comfortable distance. She was good at it, I'll give her that. She steered him from wine to whiskey with the ease of someone who had been practicing. She laughed at everything. She kept his glass full. She touched his arm when she made a point.

Caleb expanded under the attention the way a man does when he believes the room belongs to him. He was loud, then louder. He told a story twice. He didn't notice.

The associates drifted to their rooms around midnight. The fire had burned down to low orange. The house went quiet in that particular Hamptons way—the wind off the water, the creak of good wood settling.

Caleb was at the kitchen table, his jacket off, his tie loose. Paisley sat beside him. She refilled his glass one more time and rested her chin in her hand and smiled at him like he was the only thing in the room.

He was.

I came in from the hallway.

I sat down across from him. I set the folder on the table between us. I kept my voice flat and practical, the way you'd discuss a grocery list.

"Just the separation paperwork. So we can all move forward cleanly." I slid the papers toward him. "You've been saying you wanted this handled."

Caleb looked at the papers. He looked at me. His eyes were loose at the edges, soft with whiskey and satisfaction.

"Yeah." He picked up the pen from beside the fruit bowl. "Yeah, let's just—"

He signed without reading.

A flourish. Like he was approving a restaurant check.

Paisley watched from the doorway. Her mouth curved.

I gathered the papers. I slid them into the folder. I stood.

"Good night," I said.

Neither of them answered. They had already turned toward each other.

I walked out the front door into the dark.

---

The drive back to Manhattan took two hours. I kept the radio off. The highway was empty, the headlights cutting a narrow lane through the black.

I let myself into the penthouse at four in the morning.

I moved through it one last time. Not looking for anything. Just moving through the rooms the way you'd walk through a house you grew up in, after the sale has gone through. Noting the walls. Noting the light.

In the kitchen, I set two things on the counter.

My journal. The cover worn soft at the corners from years of handling.

And a sealed envelope. Hospital records. The date on them was a night in March. The night I drove myself to the emergency room with blood on my coat and a story I had never told anyone.

I straightened them so the edges were even.

I walked to the front door.

I stood there for three seconds. Not from doubt. Just to mark it. To let the moment be a moment.

Then I stepped out.

I pulled the door shut behind me.

I did not look back at it.

I drove north as the sky began, very slowly, to go gray.
