Chapter 1

On New Year's Day, I finally had a morning off.

No calls. No sprint reviews. No 6 a.m. emails from the Singapore team. Just me, a mug of coffee, and the couch I'd paid for but almost never sat on.

Flynn had left early with Brodie and his mother. "Brunch," he'd said, kissing my forehead. "You rest, babe. You earned it." He always said things like that. Two million people online believed he meant them.

I opened the family group chat. *Cunningham Crew.* Little red envelopes were already stacking up, the digital cash gifts we sent every New Year. Silly money. Five dollars here, twenty there. I smiled and reached to tap the first one.

The screen went gray.

*You were removed from the group by Flynn.*

I stared at it. My thumb hung in the air. A glitch, I told myself. He'd hit the wrong button. I found the invite link and tapped it.

*This link has been disabled.*

The coffee tasted like metal.

Flynn's tablet sat on the coffee table, charging. It synced with his phone. He never locked it. Why would he? I was the trusting one. I was the one who worked seventy hours a week and came home too tired to look.

I looked now.

A thread from *R. Talbot, Property Law.* The newest message sat at the top.

*Title transfer docs ready for the Belltown unit. Please confirm the recipient's full legal name.*

Flynn's reply: *Elyse Medina. She's the single mother I sponsor through the Harborlight Charity Fund. Want it done before Layne's bonus clears.*

The Belltown unit. My condo. The one I bought last fall with ten years of savings. Every late night. Every missed dinner. Every Christmas I spent on a laptop.

My hands went cold, like I'd dipped them in Puget Sound in January. I was twisting my wedding ring. Round and round. I made myself stop.

Then I took screenshots. All of them. Every single one.

---

The drive downtown took twenty minutes. Rain smeared the windshield. The wipers sounded like someone saying *no, no, no.*

The condo was supposed to be empty. We hadn't moved in yet. Flynn said the paint needed to cure.

I turned my key. The door swung open.

Perfume hit me first. Sweet and heavy, like vanilla gone bad. Not mine. I wear nothing.

A purple sippy cup sat on the kitchen counter, a ring of apple juice under it. Through the open closet, I saw dresses. Pink, cream, silk. Rows of them. On *my* hangers.

And at my dining table sat a woman in a silk robe. Dark hair piled on top of her head. Diamond studs in her ears. She was scrolling her phone with one long acrylic nail, like she was waiting for room service.

She glanced up. She didn't stand.

"Oh," she said. "You're early."

"Who are you?" My voice came out thin.

She smiled a little. "Elyse." Like I should already know.

The master bedroom door opened. Flynn stepped out, arms crossed over his chest. His hair was perfect. It was always perfect.

"Layne." He said my name like a sigh. "I wanted to tell you properly."

"Tell me what? That you're giving my condo to a stranger?"

"She's not a stranger. She's someone in need." He nodded at the bedroom behind him. "Your stuff from the move is in there. I need you to clear it out. Elyse should be properly settled."

"Properly settled," I repeated. "In the master bedroom. Of the home I paid for."

"We paid for," he said. Calm. Patient. Like I was a child.

A loud sigh came from the leather sofa. Virginia, his mother, lay across it in a new cashmere wrap. Camel-colored. Expensive. I knew because I'd seen the charge on my card last week.

"Honestly, Layne," she murmured, eyes half-closed. "A little Christian compassion wouldn't kill you."

"Compassion," I said. "Is that what this is?"

She rolled her eyes at the ceiling and didn't answer.

Brodie sat cross-legged on the rug, glued to the gaming tablet I'd bought him for his tenth birthday. My son. My boy. I'd rocked him through fevers. I'd flown home from Austin when he broke his wrist.

"Brodie," I said softly. "Honey?"

He looked up. Just for a second. His eyes were flat.

"Dad said Elyse is staying now." He went back to his screen. "Why are you even here?"

Nobody corrected him.

I stood in the doorway of my own home. The rain ticked on the big windows. Four people breathed in that room, and every one of them belonged there except me.

I was the stranger.

---

I walked to the guest bedroom. I didn't run. I wouldn't give them that. I shut the door and turned the lock. The click was very small.

I called Chelsea.

"Happy New Year, workaholic," she answered. I heard ice rattle in her tumbler.

"Chels." My voice was flat and even. Too even. "I need you to listen."

The ice went quiet.

I told her everything. The group chat. The attorney. Harborlight. The perfume. The sippy cup. Elyse in her robe. Brodie's eyes.

She didn't interrupt once. Chelsea always interrupts.

When I finished, she was silent for three long seconds.

"Okay," she said. Low and precise. "Don't touch anything. Don't confront him yet. Don't let him know what you saw on that tablet."

"He's giving her my—"

"I know. Let him think he's winning." A pause. "I'm calling Marcus Sterling first thing tomorrow morning."

"Who's Marcus Sterling?"

"The guy I call when someone's lying about who they are."

She hung up. I sat on the edge of the guest bed.

Through the wall, I heard Elyse laugh. Then Flynn's voice, soft and warm, the way he used to talk to me.

I opened my phone and stared at the screenshots. *Elyse Medina.* I read the name until the letters stopped looking like words.

The rain kept falling. The city lights blinked on.

I did not sleep.
