Chapter 4

Ford stood over Sienna like she was something precious that had shattered. His hand was on her shoulder. His voice was soft, careful, the voice he used when cameras were on him.

I sat in my wheelchair five feet away and watched him not look at me.

"She's dangerous," Sienna whispered. Her mascara had run in perfect black streaks down her cheeks. "Ford, I'm scared. I don't feel safe here."

He turned. Finally. His eyes landed on me and they were cold. Empty.

"If you ever touch her again," he said, "I will have you committed. Do you understand me? I will have doctors sign papers. I will have you put somewhere you can't hurt anyone."

I pressed my fingertips to my lips. I didn't speak.

Lilian appeared at the top of the stairs. She looked down at the scene — Sienna on the floor, Ford crouched beside her, me in the chair — and her mouth thinned into a line.

"Margaret," she called. "Help Miss Flores to the guest room. The blue one. Make sure she's comfortable."

Not my room. The blue one. The one with the good mattress and the view of the garden.

Margaret moved forward, her face blank, and helped Sienna to her feet. Sienna limped as she walked, leaning heavily on Margaret's arm. I watched her steps. The left ankle, the one she'd been clutching. It bore her weight just fine.

Ford stayed on the floor for a moment after they left. Then he stood and walked past me without a word. His shoulder brushed the back of my chair. I felt the vibration through the frame.

I turned the wheelchair and rolled back to the guest wing.

Inside, I opened my notebook. I wrote the date. The time. Ford's exact words. The threat. Sienna's performance. Lilian's choice of room.

Then I wrote a new line at the bottom of the page: *Ten days.*

I closed the book.

I was almost done being patient.

---

The phone call happened at midnight.

I used the encrypted line, the one tied to the consultancy, the one Ford had never known existed. Diane Okafor answered on the second ring. Her voice was alert. She didn't sleep much either.

"It's time," I said.

A pause. Then: "You're sure."

"I'm sure."

I heard the sound of her standing, papers rustling. "I'll need everything. Every document. Every screenshot. Every recorded conversation. The medical authorizations, the financial transfers, the messages. All of it."

"You'll have it in twenty minutes."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Sawyer," she said. Her voice was quieter now. "I've been practicing law for eighteen years. I've never seen a case like this. What he did to you — what they all did — it's not just criminal. It's monstrous."

"I know."

"When we file, there's no taking it back. The DA will open an investigation. The press will follow. Your life will be public in ways you can't control."

"I know," I said again. "But right now, my life isn't mine at all. So I'll take public."

She exhaled. "All right. I'll draft the divorce filing and the criminal complaint simultaneously. We'll submit both on the same day. The timing has to be exact."

"It will be."

"And Sawyer?" Her voice softened. "When this is over, you're going to need to disappear for a while. Somewhere he can't reach you. Somewhere safe."

"Already arranged."

I hung up. Then I opened my laptop and began uploading files. Seven years of evidence. Seven pregnancies. Seven murders. I watched the progress bar fill, one percent at a time, and felt nothing but the cold, steady weight of certainty.

Twenty minutes later, I sent the final file. Then I closed the laptop and sat in the dark.

I thought about staircases. About falling. About the sound two palms make when they hit your back.

I thought about Ford's voice in the hospital hallway, ordering my body taken apart like it was a transaction.

I thought about Sienna's laugh. Lilian's contempt. The wheelchair they'd given me like a cage.

And I thought about the moment — ten days from now — when I would walk out of this house and take everything they'd built with me.

I didn't sleep.

I planned.

---

The next morning, I began researching clinics.

Neurological rehabilitation centers in Switzerland. Germany. The Netherlands. I read patient testimonials. Success rates. Staff credentials. I cross-referenced with specialists who'd published papers on spinal recovery.

I found one in Zurich. A private facility that didn't advertise. The kind of place that only took referrals. The kind of place that didn't ask questions if you paid in advance.

I contacted them through an intermediary — a consultant connected to my business, someone Ford had never met. I arranged transport. Medical clearance. A private room with a view of the lake.

I set a departure date: ten days.

Then I went back to being the woman Ford expected.

I attended breakfast. I smiled at Lilian. I thanked Margaret for the tea. I sat in the guest wing and stared out the window and let them all believe I was exactly where they'd put me.

Broken. Contained. Finished.

At night, I packed. One bag. Small enough to fit under the wheelchair. Clothes. Documents. The notebook. The laptop. Everything else could burn.

I counted down the days.

Ten. Nine. Eight.

Ford came to me on the seventh night. He sat on the edge of the bed and took my hand.

"I know things have been hard," he said. "But I want you to know I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."

I squeezed his hand. I made my voice soft. "I know. Thank you."

He kissed my forehead. Then he left.

I wiped the spot where his lips had touched.

Seven days. Six. Five.

On the fourth day, Sienna came by with flowers. On the third, Lilian reminded me that the Vanderbilts were coming for dinner and I should stay upstairs.

I said yes to everything.

I smiled.

I waited.

And on the night before I left, I sat in the dark and opened my notebook one last time. I read every page. Every date. Every name. Every cruelty.

Then I closed it and set it in my bag.

Tomorrow, I would walk out of this house.

Not on my own legs. Not yet.

But I would walk out.

And I would take everything with me.
