Chapter 3

Margaret Reyes picked the café herself. Small. Loud espresso machine. Nobody from my firm within ten blocks.

She slid into the booth and set her phone face down. That's how I knew she'd come to work.

"The opening is Friday the fourteenth," she said. "Seven p.m. Two hundred and twenty on the guest list. Press from three outlets. Two luxury sponsors on stage."

"Names?"

She gave me all of them. A watch house. A champagne label. A private bank that loved to be photographed near art. I wrote nothing down. I just listened.

"The gallery is live-posting," Margaret said. "Stories, reels, the works. Everett's people want it everywhere."

"Good."

She tilted her head. "And the main wall?"

"What about it?"

"One big projection screen behind the stage. He'll show his work during the speech. It runs off a standard HDMI feed. Their tech guy told me it takes any drive you plug in." She stirred her coffee. Didn't look up. "I'm just saying. In case anyone asked."

I studied her. Margaret had known me nine years. She'd seen me at three a.m. in the office, still in yesterday's blouse. She'd seen me cancel Christmas twice.

She didn't ask why I wanted in.

"I need a name," I said.

"Already working on it." She pulled out a printed card. Cream stock. Heavy. "Claire Ashworth. Private collector. Boston money. Interested in emerging photography."

"Boston?"

"Nobody checks Boston."

I almost smiled. Almost.

"Your invitation will be at the door," she said. "Confirmed. Plus one, if you want."

"I won't."

She nodded slowly. Then she reached across the table and put her hand over mine, just for a second. Her palm was warm. Mine was ice.

"Whatever it is," Margaret said, "you've earned it."

I pulled my hand back. Gently. Because if I let that sit, something in my chest might crack.

"Thank you," I said.

That night, I sat at my kitchen island while Everett slept down the hall. Rain tapped the window. I opened a new browser, a clean one, and logged into the account I'd built three weeks ago. *A. Whitfield. Private Arts Patron.* Four hundred followers I'd bought. A profile photo of a gallery wall. Nothing else.

I had been feeding Yareli small things for weeks. A like. A comment. *Stunning light in this one.* Then a message, polite and a little dry. Money people are always a little dry.

Tonight I wrote:

*Ms. Morales, I'm hosting a private art event in SoHo on the 14th. High-profile guests. I'd like you to attend as a featured model. $3,000 appearance fee, paid in advance. A few gallery directors will be there. I'd be glad to make introductions regarding representation.*

I read it twice. Cut one word. Sent it.

The typing bubble showed up in under a minute.

*OMG!! Yes!! Of course!!*

Then: *Wait is this the Duncan show??*

My pulse ticked once. Just once.

*I'm not at liberty to say which gallery,* I wrote. *Confidentiality. But I think you'll find the room worth your time.*

*Totally understand!!* she wrote. Three hearts. *What should I wear??*

I looked at the rain on the glass. At my reflection, pale and perfectly calm.

*Dress to be seen,* I typed.

She sent back a string of flames.

One door for her. One for him. Both open now.

I closed the laptop and sat in the dark for a moment. Down the hall, Everett turned over in bed. I heard the mattress creak. I heard him sigh the sigh of a man with nothing on his conscience.

I went to bed beside him and slept like a stone.

---

The server room at my firm sat on the thirty-first floor. No windows. Cold enough to hurt. The machines hummed like a hive.

All week, I stayed after everyone left. Badge swipe, 9:40 p.m. Badge swipe, 11:15. Nobody looked twice. Simone Hart working late was the most boring fact in the building.

I built the slideshow the way I build everything. Like I was presenting to a board.

First, the beautiful work. Three of Everett's best photographs. Let them see what he wanted them to see.

Then the Birkin. The Leica. Yareli on Instagram, holding both.

Then the receipts. Dates. Amounts. A red line connecting each charge to my account.

Then the messages. *Walking ATM with no sex appeal.* Twenty-point font. White on black.

Then the wire transfers. Then the photographs. Then the total.

$412,860.

I watched it play through once, alone, my arms crossed against the cold. When it hit the total, my jaw ached. I realized I'd been clenching it for an hour.

I called Dev, a contractor I'd trusted with firm security for years. He asked me nothing. He loaded the file onto a remote-access drive and set it to auto-loop.

"It won't stop unless someone enters the override," he said. "Six digits. You pick it."

I picked it. Said it once out loud, quietly.

Then I deleted the sticky note on my screen, closed every window, and sat there repeating it in my head until it felt like my own pulse.

I didn't write it down.
