Chapter 3

The archive loaded slowly, file by file, like a confession being dragged out of someone who knew they were caught.

I sat in Emilio's chair and watched the progress bar crawl across the screen. Dozens of files. Organized by date. By location. Some of the folder names were just initials. Some were hotel names I recognized — places we had stayed together, places I had thought were ours.

I opened one file. Watched four seconds of it. Closed it.

That was enough.

I copied everything to the first encrypted server. Then the second. Then the third — a cloud account registered under an email address I had created three years ago for reasons I couldn't have explained at the time. Some instinct I had never let myself examine. I examined it now.

While the third backup ran, I pulled up the asset accounts.

The countersignature requirement had been my idea. Early days, when we were still operating out of a two-room office in Midtown and every dollar mattered. I had insisted that any transfer above a certain threshold require both our signatures. Emilio had called it paranoia. He had said it with that particular smile of his — the one that was almost fond, almost condescending, the one I had spent years interpreting as affection.

He had signed the provision anyway. Because I had asked. Because back then, I still believed that mattered.

I started moving money.

Not everything. Not in a way that would trigger immediate flags. I was careful and methodical, the way I had always been with the company's finances, the way Emilio had always trusted me to be without ever fully understanding what that trust meant. Six point three million, distributed across four accounts that required my countersignature to access — accounts that were, technically, jointly held, but that I had structured so that joint meant mine.

By the time the transfers cleared, the backup was done.

I sat back and pressed my thumb against the inside of my ring finger.

Six point three million. A start.

The entertainment investment file was still open in another window. Two million dollars, earmarked for a production company with one project in development and a D-list influencer attached as executive producer. I had seen the proposal six months ago and said nothing. I had recognized Aleyna's name in the fine print and told myself it was a coincidence. That Emilio had simply liked the project on its merits.

I canceled it.

Strategic reallocation. Two words in the memo field. I signed it with Emilio's credentials and sent the notification before I could think too carefully about the look on Aleyna's face when she found out.

Actually, I thought about it for a moment.

Then I picked up Emilio's phone and opened a browser.

The first outlet was a gossip site that had broken three celebrity affairs in the past year. The second was a entertainment news blog with a loyal following and a reputation for accuracy. The third was a journalist I had met twice at industry events — sharp, ambitious, the kind of person who understood that a good source was worth protecting.

I sent three separate anonymous messages. Each one contained enough detail to make the story real: a prominent married CEO, a D-list influencer with brand deals, a relationship that had been running for years. I attached nothing traceable. I included enough specifics that any competent journalist could connect the dots without my help.

I deleted the sent messages and cleared the browser history.

Outside, the Manhattan skyline was going amber and gold. I had been in this office for nine hours. My back ached in a way that felt unfamiliar — Emilio's body carrying tension differently than mine, storing it in different places. I rolled his shoulders and stood.

My phone — his phone — buzzed.

A text from the penthouse. Emilio, in my body, using my phone.

*She's here.*

Two words. I knew exactly who he meant.

---

I watched it on my laptop through the penthouse security feed, the small camera I had installed in the dining room two years ago after a piece of jewelry went missing during a Gloria visit. I had never told Emilio about it. Another instinct I hadn't examined until now.

Gloria Reyes walked through the front door without knocking.

She never knocked. It was her son's home, which meant it was her home, which meant the woman who lived in it was a guest at best and a fixture at worst. I had understood this within six months of our marriage and spent the following years pretending I hadn't.

She was carrying the monogrammed bag. Of course she was.

Emilio — in my body, wearing my face — was sitting at the dining table when she came in. He looked up. I watched him try to arrange my features into something neutral and not quite manage it.

Gloria didn't greet him.

She set the bag on the table, unzipped it, and extracted the thermos. The same thermos she had been bringing for three years. Dark glass, silver lid, the smell of it something between medicine and punishment. She set it down in front of him with the particular precision of someone performing a ritual they have long since stopped questioning.

'Drink it,' she said.

Emilio looked at the thermos. I watched his throat move.

'All of it,' Gloria added. She sat down. In my chair. At the head of my table, in the seat I had stopped trying to claim somewhere around year two of the marriage, because the energy it cost to reclaim it every visit was energy I needed for everything else.

She folded her hands.

'You look tired,' she said. It was not a sympathetic observation. 'A woman who cannot manage her own health cannot manage a household. Cannot manage a pregnancy.' She paused. 'Not that pregnancy appears to be a concern at this point.'

Emilio said nothing.

'Three years,' Gloria said. 'Three years of this treatment and nothing to show for it. Do you understand what that means for this family? Do you understand what people say?'

On the screen, I watched my own face absorb this. Watched Emilio sit in my body and receive what I had been receiving for three years, and I felt nothing that resembled satisfaction. What I felt was quieter than that. More settled.

This was the education he had never bothered to seek.

'A wife who cannot fulfill her function,' Gloria said, 'has no value. That is not cruelty. That is simply the truth.' She nodded at the thermos. 'Drink.'

Emilio picked it up. I watched him take the first sip and saw my face contract — the bitterness of it, the particular awfulness that I had learned to swallow without expression over years of practice.

He had no practice.

He drank it anyway. All of it. In silence, while Gloria sat in my chair and told him, in careful and unhurried language, exactly how little he was worth.

I closed the laptop.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my ring finger and held it there.

Forty-eight hours left on the clock. Two million canceled. Six point three million moved. An archive backed up on three servers. Three journalists with enough rope to hang Aleyna's public image before the week was out.

And Emilio, sitting in my body, finally learning the shape of the life I had been living.

I picked up the list Khloe had given me, unfolded it, and read the SoHo address again.

There was still so much left to do.
