Chapter 4

Rowan’s phone buzzed on the glass coffee table.

He picked it up, glanced at the caller ID, and tapped the speaker button.

"Mr. Bennett?" a woman’s professional voice came through the line. "This is Saint Jude’s Specialty Care. We’re calling regarding Henry Carlson’s medical insurance renewal and the pending invoice for his private kidney specialist. The coverage lapses at five today."

Rowan leaned back against the cushions. His thumb tapped the rim of his scotch glass. "How much?"

"Forty-eight thousand for the upcoming quarter, sir."

Rowan’s eyes slid toward me. I was wiping down the kitchen counter across the open room. His mouth curled into a slow, cold smile.

"Keep the file open," Rowan said into the phone. "I’ll handle it shortly."

He ended the call and tossed the phone onto the sofa.

Brooke was lying across the other end of the sectional, painting her fingernails bright crimson. She blew on her wet nails and looked up, her gaze flicking between Rowan and me.

"Come here, Daphne," Rowan said. His voice was smooth and quiet.

I set the damp cloth down on the marble. I walked over and stopped two paces from the sofa.

Rowan pointed a finger at the floor between Brooke’s bare feet.

"Your father’s bills are getting very steep," he said. He crossed his arms over his chest. "I don't mind paying them. After all, I am a generous man. But generosity requires gratitude. And Brooke feels like you’ve been a little cold lately."

Brooke smiled. She capped her nail polish bottle, stretched her long legs out on the leather cushions, and wiggled her pink-tipped toes.

"Much too cold," Brooke purred. "She glares at me whenever she thinks you aren't looking."

"We can't have that," Rowan said. His eyes locked onto mine. "Get on your knees, Daphne. Give Brooke a foot massage. Show her proper respect."

A cold shock hit the center of my chest.

My breath caught in my throat. My knuckles went white as my hands curled into tight balls at my sides. A red-hot heat roared behind my eyes. It wasn't fear. It wasn't shame. It was volcanic, blinding fury.

Brooke watched me, her smirk widening. She crossed one ankle over the other and waited.

"Did you hear me?" Rowan asked. His tone was casual, but the threat underneath was sharp as a razor. "Or should I call Saint Jude’s back and tell them to cancel your father’s dialysis?"

My jaw clicked shut.

I took a slow breath through my nose. I pushed the burning scream down into the hollow pit of my stomach.

I bent my knees.

The hardwood floor was cold beneath my skin. I lowered myself until I was kneeling right at Brooke’s feet. Rowan watched from above, his face filled with lazy amusement.

I reached out with steady hands. I took Brooke’s right foot in my palms. The skin felt cool and lotion-slicked.

I pressed my thumbs deep into the arch of her foot.

Brooke leaned her head back against the sofa cushions with a loud, exaggerated sigh. "Oh, that’s heaven," she groaned, laughing softly. "See, Rowan? She’s actually good for something."

Rowan chuckled and took a sip of his drink.

I kept my head down. My thumbs moved methodically across her skin, pressing, sliding, pressing again. Behind my ribs, my heart beat like a war drum.

Inside my head, a single thought echoed in the dark.

*Four days.*

***

Two days later, the penthouse was empty.

Rowan was locked in a forty-eight-hour marathon recording session at an outside studio in Midtown. Brooke had taken his black card to spend the afternoon browsing designer boutiques on Madison Avenue.

I had three hours.

I took a commuter train thirty miles north of the city to a quiet suburban bank. The air was gray and chilly when I stepped onto the platform.

Inside the bank’s vault, the air smelled of cold steel and paper.

The clerk led me to a private viewing booth, unlocked box number 412, and left, pulling the heavy door shut behind him.

I sat at the small metal table and opened the lid.

Inside lay two items.

The first was a thick manila folder labeled *Confidential Medical Record — Thorne Surgical Clinic*.

I opened it. On top was the donor consent form, dated five years ago. My old signature was scribbled in black ink at the bottom: *Daphne Carlson*.

Beneath it were the surgical scans. Pictures of my vocal cords before and after the excision. Pictures of Rowan’s damaged laryngeal tissue being replaced by my healthy tissue.

And tucked on the final page were Dr. Elias Thorne’s handwritten clinical notes.

*Procedure: Experimental Allogeneic Vocal Fold & Laryngeal Tissue Graft.*

*Biological viability limit: Sixty months.*

*Note: Graft will degrade completely without second-stage booster procedure at the five-year mark. Irreversible cellular collapse will follow.*

Next to the folder was a small, silver flash drive.

I plugged it into my portable tablet. A grid of video files appeared on the screen, all stamped with digital dates and times.

Hours of penthouse security footage. Rowan dragging me down the hall. Rowan tossing Brooke onto our bed. Rowan laughing while he shoved me to the floor. The cloud backups had saved every single frame.

Everything was in order. The trap was set.

I unplugged the drive and slid it into the inner lining of my coat. I closed the metal box, handed the key back to the clerk, and walked back out to the platform.

The wind blew hard off the tracks, smelling of autumn rain. I pulled my scarf tight around my throat.

*Two days.*
