Chapter 2

They came on a Tuesday.

I heard Shay's voice before I saw her—soft, warm, carrying down the corridor like she owned it. "We just wanted to check on sweet little Stella. I hope that's okay."

It wasn't okay. Nothing about it was okay. But Julien was with her, and he was already holding the door open, and by the time I was on my feet they were both inside.

Mason walked in behind them. He was five, maybe six. He had a metal toy car in his hand and he was dragging it along the wall, leaving a thin scratch in the paint.

I looked at Stella. She was propped up against her pillows, Bun tucked under her arm, watching the door with the careful attention of a child who has spent her whole life reading rooms. Her eyes moved from Shay to Mason and then found mine.

I gave her a small nod. I'm here.

She didn't look reassured.

"She looks so much better," Shay said. She had her hands clasped at her chest, her voice pitched at that particular frequency—gentle, aching, performing concern for an audience of one. "Doesn't she look better, Julien?"

Julien glanced at Stella the way you glance at a painting you've already decided you don't need to look at closely. "Yeah," he said. "She looks fine."

I stood near the window with my arms crossed and said nothing.

Mason was already bored. He circled the room once, dragging the toy car across the tray table, across the back of my chair. Stella tracked him without moving her head. Just her eyes.

Then he stopped at the foot of her bed.

He looked at her for a second. Then he pulled his arm back and threw the toy car directly at her chest.

The sound it made when it hit was small. Metal on skin, near bone.

Stella cried out—sharp, involuntary, her hands flying to her sternum where the incision was still healing beneath the bandages. Her face went white.

Mason pointed at her and laughed. "You look like a monster," he said. "What's all that on your chest?"

I was out of my chair before he finished the sentence.

"Get him out." My voice was shaking but it was quiet. Controlled. I turned to Shay. "Take your son and get out of this room right now."

Shay's face crumpled on cue. Her hand went to her mouth. "Mason, oh my God—Mason, say sorry—" She looked at Julien. Her eyes filled.

Julien stepped between us.

"Lara." His voice had that flat, practiced patience. The tone he used when he'd already decided I was the problem. "He's a kid. He didn't mean anything by it."

"He threw a metal object at our daughter's surgical site."

"He's five."

"She just had open-heart surgery, Julien."

"You're making a scene." He said it quietly, like he was doing me a favor. "These people came to be supportive and you're—"

"Supportive." The word came out flat. I looked at him for a moment. Then I looked at Shay.

She was still performing. Her shoulders were curved inward, her chin down, her eyes wet. One hand rested on Julien's arm. The picture of a woman distressed, fragile, needing protection.

But for one second—just one—she looked up and her eyes met mine.

And there was nothing in them.

No remorse. No embarrassment. No warmth. Just a flat, cold assessment, quick as a shutter click. She looked at me the way you look at an obstacle you've already calculated how to move.

Then her face crumpled again and she murmured something soft to Julien about not wanting to cause trouble.

I turned back to the window. My hands were very still at my sides. My heart was loud in my ears.

I said nothing.

I didn't need to.

Dr. Freeman arrived eleven minutes later for his rounds. He stopped in the doorway and took in the room—Shay, Mason, Julien, the scratch on the tray table, Stella still holding her chest—and his expression didn't change at all.

"I need to clear the room," he said. Not loudly. Not unkindly. The tone of a man who does not negotiate. "Post-surgical sterile protocol. Unauthorized visitors are a contamination risk."

Julien opened his mouth.

"Now, please," Dr. Freeman said.

They left. Shay touched Julien's arm as they went. Mason dragged the toy car along the doorframe on his way out.

The room went quiet.

Dr. Freeman checked Stella's chart. He checked her vitals. He examined the area near her incision with careful, unhurried hands and asked her if it hurt. She nodded. He wrote something down.

Then he pulled a small notebook from his coat pocket—the handwritten one, not the tablet—and sat at the desk near the door.

I watched him write. Date. Time. He paused, wrote something else. Paused again.

He didn't look at me. He didn't explain what he was recording.

But something in the deliberateness of it—the scratch of the pen, the careful attention—settled into my chest like ballast.

Somewhere, I understood, a record was beginning.

I sat down beside Stella. I took her hand. She leaned into my shoulder and I started humming—low, tuneless, the sound that has no melody but has always had her.

On the desk near the door, Dr. Freeman kept writing.
