Chapter 3

The broken pieces of my mother's amulet lay wrapped in silk in my drawer, a physical reminder of the shattered life I'd been living. Three days had passed since I discovered Ethan's betrayal, and each moment since had been a careful dance of pretending nothing had changed while my mind worked furiously beneath the surface.

Selene paced restlessly within me. *Tonight,* she urged. *When the pack sleeps.*

I nodded imperceptibly, checking my reflection one last time before leaving our bedroom. The dark circles under my eyes were perfectly concealed, my hair immaculately styled. No one would suspect the storm raging inside me.

"I'll be working late with Marcus," Ethan informed me over dinner, not bothering to look up from his phone. "Don't wait up."

"Of course," I replied, the perfect picture of a dutiful Luna. "I have some designs to finish anyway."

His disinterest was my advantage. As soon as the grandfather clock in the hall struck midnight, I slipped from our bed, dressed in dark clothing, and made my way through the silent corridors of the pack house.

The records vault was located in the east wing, adjacent to Silas's office. Few pack members had access, but years ago, I had memorized the security code when Ethan carelessly entered it in my presence. He'd never imagined I would have any reason to use it.

My fingers trembled slightly as I punched in the numbers. The lock clicked open, and I slipped inside, closing the door silently behind me.

The vault smelled of old paper and dust. Moonlight filtered through a high window, casting silver beams across rows of filing cabinets. I knew exactly what I was looking for: mate ceremony records.

Each drawer was meticulously labeled. I found the section for official ceremonies and began rifling through the files, my heart pounding so loudly I feared someone might hear it echoing through the silent room.

And then I found it—a folder labeled "Reynolds, E. & Parker, O." With shaking hands, I opened it.

The document inside bore the official seal of the Werewolf Council. "Mate Ceremony: Alpha Ethan Reynolds and Olivia Parker, conducted in private ceremony on June 12th, six years ago."

The exact date of my supposed "rejection."

I took photos with my phone, careful to capture every detail, every signature. Proof of a ceremony conducted in secret while I continued to live as his Luna, unaware that in the eyes of pack law, I was nothing.

*We need more,* Selene whispered. *Medical proof.*

I replaced the folder exactly as I'd found it and slipped out of the vault, my mind already forming the next step of my plan.

"Luna Claire," Healer Elara greeted me the next morning, her kind eyes crinkling at the corners. "What brings you to the healing den?"

I'd chosen my moment carefully—early morning, when most pack members were still asleep or busy with breakfast. Elara was alone in her workspace, organizing herbs.

"I need to speak with you privately," I said, my voice low. "About a sensitive matter."

Something in my tone must have alerted her. She quickly closed the door to her office and activated a privacy ward—a small gesture that spoke volumes about her intuition.

"What troubles you?" she asked, gesturing for me to sit.

I took a deep breath. "I need to know if someone has been poisoning me."

Elara's eyes widened, but to her credit, she didn't immediately dismiss my concern. "What makes you think that?"

"The supplements Ethan insists I take every morning. I believe they contain herbs to suppress my fertility."

A shadow crossed her face. She was silent for a long moment, clearly wrestling with her healer's oath and her loyalty to the Alpha.

"I can run some tests," she finally said. "But I need a sample."

I reached into my pocket and produced a small vial containing one of the capsules. "Here."

Elara's examination was thorough and silent. I watched as she crushed the capsule, separated its contents, and tested them with various reagents. Her face grew increasingly troubled.

"Moon Goddess," she whispered finally. "This contains concentrated wolfsbane extract and silver thistle. Both powerful suppressants of a female wolf's reproductive system."

"And if taken daily for years?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

"Potentially permanent damage to your wolf's fertility." Her eyes met mine, filled with compassion and horror. "Claire, who gave you these?"

"My mate," I replied, the word bitter on my tongue. "The Alpha."

Elara's hands trembled as she documented her findings, creating an official medical report. "This is a violation of pack law," she said quietly. "To deliberately harm a wolf's ability to reproduce without consent..."

"I need that report," I said. "And your discretion."

She handed me the sealed document. "What will you do?"

"What I must," I replied, tucking the evidence away. "Thank you, Elara."

---

That evening, Elder Anderson slipped me a small device—an ancient mind-link recorder tuned to a frequency so old most modern wolves had forgotten it existed.

"Be careful," he warned. "This will capture their thoughts, but you must be within close range."

I nodded, concealing the device in my palm. "I know exactly when to use it."

I didn't have to wait long. That night, Ethan and Marcus retreated to his study for their weekly strategy meeting. I positioned myself in the adjoining room, activating the recorder.

Their voices filtered through the mind-link frequency, unguarded and clear.

"The herbs are working perfectly," Ethan was saying. "Another year, and the damage will be permanent."

"And then what?" Marcus asked. "You can't keep her as Luna forever."

Ethan's laugh was cold. "Once Olivia's position is secure and Jacob is old enough, I'll reveal the truth. Claire will have no choice but to accept her fate as an omega."

"And if she fights it?"

"She won't," Ethan replied confidently. "I've spent ten years breaking her spirit. She believes she's worthless without me."

I clutched the recorder tightly, tears streaming down my face as I captured every damning word. They had no idea how wrong they were.

I wasn't broken. I was awakening—and my revenge was just beginning.
