Chapter 4

Piper shows up at seven in the morning with two paper cups of gas station coffee. The kind that tastes like burnt rubber and regret. She doesn't knock. Just walks in. I'm standing at the kitchen counter staring at another box of jasmine on the doorstep.

"You changed the locks yet?" she asks.

I shake my head.

"Do it today." She sets the coffee down. Pulls a thick folder from her bag. "I found the facility."

I go very still.

"It's in Switzerland. Outside Lucerne. Shut down eighteen months ago. Different name now. Different owners." She flips the folder open. "But I found a nurse. She talked. And I found the doctor who designed your protocols."

She slides a document across the counter. Sworn affidavit. Dr. Renata Voss. I scan the first page. Words jump out. Hypnotic regression. Memory suppression. Identity reconstruction. Experimental. Unethical. Illegal in most jurisdictions.

My hands don't shake. I keep reading.

"Six months," Piper says quietly. "They had you for six months. Dorian paid cash. No records. No paper trail except what Voss kept for her own protection."

I turn the page. There's a photo. Clinical. Cold. A woman in a hospital bed. Wires on her head. Eyes open but empty.

Me.

I set the photo down. Pick up the coffee. It's terrible. I drink it anyway.

"There's more," Piper says. She pulls out another stack of papers. "Dorian never filed a missing persons report. No death certificate. No legal documentation of any kind. Alayna Reed just vanished from every database. Social security. DMV. Bank accounts. All frozen or closed."

She slides over another document. "Claire Snow appeared six months later. Birth certificate. Social security number. Driver's license. Marriage license. All of it fabricated but thorough enough to pass scrutiny. He didn't just erase you. He replaced you."

I stare at the papers. Claire Snow's life. Neat. Complete. Fake.

"This is what I found," Piper says. Her voice is careful. Steady. "This is what was done to you. You have the right to know all of it."

I nod. My throat is tight.

"There's one more thing." She hesitates. Just for a second. "Your mother."

My head snaps up.

"Is she alive?"

"Yes." Piper's watching me. "She's in a private facility in Connecticut. Catatonic. Has been for six years. The bills are paid by an anonymous trust. No visitors on record. No family contact."

Because the world thought I was dead.

I close my eyes. Mom. Still alive. Still lost.

"I can get you the address," Piper says quietly.

"Do it."

She makes a note. We sit in silence. The coffee goes cold.

"Thank you," I say finally.

Piper shakes her head. "Don't thank me. Just tell me what you need next."

I look at the folder. At the evidence of my erasure. At proof that I was right. That I'm not crazy. That this happened.

"A locksmith," I say. "And a lawyer who can make divorce papers he can't ignore."

Piper almost smiles. "Consider it done."

---

The papers are ready by Thursday. Marcus Holt sends them by courier. Clean. Thorough. Brutal.

I wait until Tuesday morning. I don't know why Tuesday. It just feels right.

Dorian's been staying at a hotel. Piper confirmed it. But he still comes by. Leaves things. Flowers. Letters. Yesterday it was a framed photo of us. Claire and Dorian. Smiling on a beach.

I burned it.

This morning, I hear his car in the driveway. The front door opens. He still has a key. I haven't changed the locks yet. I wanted him to walk in. Wanted him to see me waiting.

He stops in the doorway to the kitchen. He looks terrible. Thinner. Unshaven. His eyes go straight to me.

"Alayna." My name in his mouth. Rough. Hopeful.

I don't answer. I slide the papers across the kitchen island. The same counter where we ate breakfast. Where Claire laughed at his jokes. Where everything was easy and false.

He looks down. Sees the heading. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

His face crumples.

He picks them up. Reads the first page. The second. His hands start shaking.

"No." He looks up. "No. I won't sign this."

"You don't have a choice."

"I do." He's gripping the papers so hard they crease. "I won't let you go. Not again. I can't."

"You didn't almost lose me," I say quietly. "You killed me. Then you built a doll that looked like me and kept it for five years. Those are not the same thing."

He flinches like I hit him.

"I loved you," he says. His voice breaks. "I still love you. Everything I did—"

"Was for you." I cut him off. "Not for me. For you. Because you couldn't stand losing. Because you needed to own me."

"That's not true."

"Sign the papers."

"No." He tears them in half. Right down the middle. Lets the pieces fall to the counter.

I watch them flutter. Land.

Then I pull my phone from my pocket. Text Marcus: *Send another set. Certified mail. His attorney's office.*

I look at Dorian. "You can tear up every copy I bring you. It won't matter. The state of California doesn't need your signature if you refuse to participate. I'll get my divorce either way. This was just a courtesy."

His face goes white.

"You're really doing this," he whispers.

"Yes."

"I'll give you everything. The company. The houses. The money. All of it. Just don't leave me with nothing."

I pick up the torn papers. Hold them for a moment. Then let them fall into the trash.

"You already have nothing," I say. "You just haven't figured it out yet."

I walk past him. Out of the kitchen. Up the stairs.

Behind me, I hear him sink onto a barstool. Hear the sound of his breathing. Ragged. Broken.

I don't look back.

In my bedroom, I pull out my suitcase. Start packing.

New York. Mom. Home.

I'm done being a ghost.
