Chapter 4

I drove to Connecticut on a Wednesday morning, when Nicholas thought I was at a board luncheon.

The house had been locked up since last Christmas. I used my key — the old brass one my father kept on a hook by the kitchen door, the one I'd taken the week after the funeral and never given back. The alarm beeped twice. I punched in my mother's birthday. It still worked.

The study smelled like him. Old paper and cedar and something faintly sweet, pipe tobacco maybe, though he'd quit smoking before I was born. I'd always thought that smell was just him — just Robert Taylor, woven into the walls. I stood in the doorway for a moment and let myself feel it. Then I sat down at his desk and got to work.

The files were exactly where he'd always kept them. Four gray boxes, labeled in his handwriting — *Taylor Enterprises: Founding Docs, 1994-1998.* I'd seen them a hundred times growing up, stacked on the bottom shelf like they held up the room. I'd never actually opened them.

I opened them now.

It took me three hours. My coffee went cold. Outside, the wind moved through the old oak my mother had planted the year they bought the house, and the branches scraped against the window the way they always had, the sound I used to hear from my childhood bedroom and find comforting.

I read everything.

The original incorporation documents. My father's signature on every page, big and looping, the way I remembered. The early board minutes, the Series A filings, the shareholder agreements. Thirty years of a man's life, distilled into paper.

Then I found the restructuring documents. The ones from two years after my parents died.

I read them slowly. Then I read them again.

Nicholas had moved fast. I hadn't known how fast. Within eight months of the funeral — while I was still sleeping twelve hours a day and forgetting to eat — he'd proposed three board amendments. Diluted the founding shareholder class. Restructured the voting rights. Brought in two new board members, both of them men his father knew, men who'd never met Robert Taylor and had no loyalty to his name.

And then, eighteen months after the funeral, the name change. *Taylor Enterprises* became *Hudson Group* in a single board resolution, passed five to two, on a Tuesday afternoon I had no memory of. I would have been twenty-one. I would have been signing whatever he put in front of me, because he was the only solid thing in the world and I trusted him the way you trust the floor under your feet.

I sat very still for a long time.

Outside, the oak tree scraped the window. The light through the curtains shifted, going gold and thin the way it did in late afternoon. I hadn't noticed the hours pass.

I touched my father's signature on the founding document. That big, looping hand.

Then I took out my phone and photographed every page.

---

I got back to the penthouse at nine.

Nicholas was already asleep, or pretending to be. His breathing was too even. I'd learned the difference.

I went to the kitchen table. I got a piece of paper — not my phone, not a laptop, just paper, the way my father always said the things that mattered deserved — and I started to write.

I didn't plan what to say. It just came.

*I don't know what to call you yet. I've been afraid to think too hard about names, the way you're afraid to look directly at something beautiful in case it disappears.*

*Your grandmother's name was Diane. She had a laugh that filled a room. Your grandfather built something from nothing, and someone took it from him after he was gone, and I let them, because I was nineteen and I didn't know better. But I know now.*

*The lake house in Connecticut has a dock that lists a little to the left. Your grandmother planted a garden by the back fence that still comes up every spring — I checked last summer, the peonies are still there, pink and ridiculous and stubborn. I want to show you.*

*Her perfume was something with gardenias. I haven't been able to find the exact one. I'm still looking.*

I stopped there. I didn't write about Nicholas. There was nothing to say about him that I wanted this child to carry.

I folded the letter in thirds. I found an envelope in the kitchen drawer and sealed it. Then I went to the bedroom closet, to the shelf where I kept the velvet box — the one with my mother's pearl earrings, the ones I only wore when I needed courage.

I lifted the lid. The pearls sat in their grooves, small and white and steady.

I placed the letter beneath them and closed the box.

Tomorrow was the gala. I already knew what earrings I would wear.
