Chapter 2

The first photo showed up on a Tuesday. Nicholas and Laila in Central Park, his hand at the small of her back, both of them laughing at something outside the frame. The caption called her his "rumored fiancée." Rumored. Like the ring in Aspen hadn't been photographed from four different angles.

By Thursday there were three more. A dinner in Tribeca, candlelight, her fingers wrapped around a wine glass she probably hadn't paid for. A charity gala where he introduced her from the stage as Hudson Group's new "brand ambassador," and the room clapped, and I sat at a table near the back in a dress I'd bought for that exact event, and nobody clapped for me.

I started checking my phone the way you check a wound — carefully, bracing for it to hurt worse than you remember. Fan accounts appeared out of nowhere, thousands of followers overnight, edits of Nicholas and Laila set to music, captions with heart emojis. *nichlaila endgame*. *he deserves happiness*. Someone made a moodboard.

Then the blind items started.

*Which Hudson heir's wife has been "quietly checked out" of her marriage for years? Sources say cold doesn't begin to cover it.*

*A certain CEO's barren wife has been more interested in charity boards than her own husband. No wonder he found comfort elsewhere.*

Barren. I read that word four times before it stopped looking like English.

I printed them out. I don't know why — some old instinct from my father, who never trusted a screen for anything that mattered. I laid the pages on the kitchen island that night, next to the black cod Nicholas's assistant had ordered from the place he liked, and I waited for him to come home.

He came in at eight-forty, jacket over one shoulder, already loosening his tie. He saw the papers before he saw me.

"What's this?"

"Read it."

He picked up the top page, scanned it fast, the way he read board memos — looking for the parts that mattered to him and skipping the rest. "Emersyn, this is tabloid trash. You know how this works."

"They're calling me barren. In print. In a piece that also calls Laila your *brand ambassador* like that's a real job and not something Victor Hale made up so she'd have a reason to be photographed with you every week."

"It's not real reporting. Nobody serious reads this."

"I read it. Your mother reads it. My board reads it, Nicholas." I kept my voice level. I'd practiced that, actually — practiced staying calm, because the one time I'd raised my voice at him, months ago, over something small, he'd looked at me like I'd embarrassed us both. "I need you to say something. A statement. Anything. Tell people the engagement photo was staged, tell them Laila is not — whatever they're implying she is to you."

He set the page down and straightened his cufflinks, and I watched him do it, and for the first time I let myself really see what that gesture meant. He was gearing up. Getting ready to manage me.

"If I put out a statement, I'm feeding the story. I'm confirming there's something worth denying. That's PR one-oh-one." He said it gently, like he was explaining gravity to a child. "Engaging with tabloids is beneath us. Beneath the company. We're two weeks from the IPO roadshow, Em. This is not the moment to look rattled."

"I'm not asking you to look rattled. I'm asking you to defend your wife."

"You're making yourself hysterical over a blind item." He picked up his own plate, moved to the table, sat down like the conversation was over. "The press mischaracterizes everything. You know that better than anyone — remember when they said your father inflated the Series C numbers? Total fiction. It blew over. This will too."

I stood at the island a moment longer, my hands flat on the printed pages, and I thought about how easily he'd turned my father's name into an example, a data point, something to prove his own theory correct. He hadn't answered a single thing I'd actually said.

"Sit down, the fish is getting cold," he said, not looking up.

I sat. I don't know why I sat. Old habit, maybe — the same one that kept my spine straight and my voice soft for ten years, the one that made peace feel like the only currency I had.

But I watched him eat, unbothered, already scrolling through something on his phone — investor notes, I assumed, or maybe not — and I understood something I hadn't let myself say out loud yet, not even inside my own head.

He wasn't protecting me from the story.

He was protecting the story from me.

The IPO. The optics. The clean, uncomplicated narrative where he was a visionary CEO with a glamorous ambassador at his side, not a man whose pregnant wife was being called barren in the New York Post. My pain wasn't a crisis to him. It was a scheduling conflict.

I touched my stomach under the table, where no one could see, and thought about the doctor's voice. *Barely. No stress. Not in the first trimester.*

Then I picked up my fork, and I ate, and I didn't say another word for the rest of the night.
