Chapter 1

The alarm never rang. I'd been awake since four, watching the darkness fade into a pale gray dawn through our bedroom curtains. Michael's side of the bed remained untouched, the sheets still crisp from yesterday's making. Not unusual—he often worked late. But today was different. Today marked thirty years.

I slipped from bed and padded to the closet, my fingers finding the emerald-green dress I'd hidden behind my winter coats. The saleswoman at Nordstrom had assured me it took ten years off, though I wasn't sure I believed her. Still, Michael had always loved me in green. Said it brought out the gold flecks in my brown eyes.

Downstairs, the house felt hollow in the pre-dawn quiet. I polished each crystal wine glass until it gleamed, arranged and rearranged the silverware, then finally placed a single red rose across his plate. Just like our first anniversary, when we could barely afford the apartment, let alone a fancy dinner. He'd brought me one rose then, said it was all he needed—one perfect thing for his one perfect love.

The kitchen became my sanctuary as morning broke. I lost myself in the familiar rhythm of chopping shallots, reducing wine, stirring the lobster risotto with the patience it demanded. The chocolate soufflé batter waited in the refrigerator, ready for its moment. Everything had to be perfect. Everything would be perfect.

My hands stilled over the cutting board as my gaze drifted to the bookshelf visible through the doorway. There, between Michael's business books and my forgotten novels, sat our college photo. I wiped my hands on my apron and retrieved it, tracing the faces of those fearless kids who thought love could conquer anything. We'd been so young. So certain.

"Eleanor, you're making a mistake," my mother had said, her pearls catching the light as she'd turned away from me that final time. "Men like him—they take and take until there's nothing left."

I'd proven her wrong, hadn't I? Thirty years. Two affairs forgiven. One son raised. A business empire built on the foundation of our love.

The afternoon melted into evening. I showered, styled my graying hair into soft waves, applied lipstick with a steady hand. The dress fit perfectly, hugging curves that had softened with age but remained, I hoped, appealing to the man who'd mapped them with his hands for three decades.

Six o'clock. I lit the candles, their warm glow dancing across the crystal and china. The Bordeaux—a 1994, from the year Jason was born—breathed in the decanter.

Seven o'clock. I sent a text: "Dinner's ready when you are. Happy anniversary, my love."

Eight o'clock. Another text: "Everything okay? The risotto is keeping warm."

Nine. Ten. The candles had burned halfway down, wax pooling on the silver holders I'd inherited from my grandmother. My phone remained silent, its black screen reflecting my increasingly drawn face.

Eleven. I stood, my knees protesting after hours of sitting. The risotto had congealed into a sticky mass. The soufflé would never rise now. I scraped each plate into the garbage, the sound harsh in the quiet house.

Midnight. I blew out the candles one by one, smoke curling up like the ghost of my expectations. In the living room, our wedding portrait watched me with knowing eyes—that radiant bride who'd defied her family for love, who'd believed she was worth choosing, worth coming home to.

I poured the wine down the sink, watching the red swirl away. Upstairs, I hung the green dress back in the closet, behind the winter coats where it belonged. Michael's side of the bed remained untouched.

The next morning arrived too bright, too ordinary. I made coffee with mechanical precision, my movements automatic after three decades of practice. The anniversary dishes still sat in the dishwasher. The rose on Michael's plate had already begun to wilt.

When my phone rang, I expected Michael's name, an excuse, an apology. Instead, the screen showed an unknown number. I almost didn't answer.

"Eleanor Bennett?" The woman's voice was crisp, confident. "My name is Victoria Palmer. We need to talk about your husband."

My coffee mug paused halfway to my lips. "I'm sorry, who is this?"

"I said, Victoria Palmer. I'll be at the Starbucks on Newbury Street in an hour. You'll want to hear what I have to say."

The line went dead. I set down my mug with trembling fingers, watching the coffee's surface ripple like disturbed water, like the calm before a storm.
