Chapter 1

The attorney's office sat on a quiet street in Brooklyn. No brass plaques. No marble floors. Just a name on a door and a receptionist who looked up when I walked in.

"Elena Daniels," I said. "I have an appointment with Kyla Martinez."

The woman nodded and gestured toward a hallway. I held Haisley's hand tighter. My daughter looked up at me with those wide brown eyes, trusting and curious. I had left her with a neighbor for this. I had told myself I could do this in under an hour.

Kyla Martinez was younger than I expected. Sharp suit. Sharper eyes. She stood when I entered and shook my hand with the kind of grip that said she had done this before.

"Ms. Daniels," she said. "Please, sit."

I sat. I pulled the envelope from my bag and set it on her desk. Inside were the medical records. The diagnosis. The prognosis. Four weeks, maybe less. Stage IV gastric cancer with metastasis to the lymph nodes and liver. Dr. Chu had printed it all out for me after I made him swear he would never tell another living soul.

Kyla opened the envelope and read in silence. Her face did not change. When she finished, she set the papers down and looked at me.

"I'm sorry," she said.

I nodded. I did not need her to be sorry. I needed her to do her job.

"I have a four-year-old daughter," I said. "No family. No savings. Her father is Harrison Fox."

Kyla's eyebrows lifted slightly. Everyone in New York knew the Fox name. Hotels. Real estate. Old money that never ran out.

"He's been asking me to come back," I continued. "I'm going to accept. I need you to draft a will, a guardianship plan, and a trust fund structure before I do."

Kyla leaned back in her chair. "You're going back to secure her inheritance."

"Yes."

"And he doesn't know you're dying."

"No. And he won't. Not until it's too late to change anything."

Kyla was quiet for a moment. Then she pulled a legal pad toward her and clicked her pen.

"Walk me through what you want," she said.

I told her. Every detail. The trust fund that would activate upon my death. The court-appointed guardian I wanted vetted and selected. The conditions under which the Fox family could contest it, and how to make those conditions impossible to meet. I had written it all out in careful handwriting on the back of a grocery receipt. Kyla took notes and asked questions. She did not tell me this was extreme. She did not tell me to reconcile with Harrison for real. She just worked.

When we finished, she looked at me across the desk.

"This will hold," she said. "But you need to survive long enough for me to finalize it. Two weeks minimum."

"I'll survive," I said.

I stood to leave. At the door, I paused and turned back.

"Haisley's favorite book is about a rabbit who builds a house," I said. "In case anyone ever asks."

Kyla nodded slowly. She understood. I left.

Two days later, I called Harrison.

He answered on the second ring. His voice was careful, like he was afraid I would hang up.

"Elena?"

"I'll come back," I said.

Silence. Then: "You will?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"This weekend."

Another pause. I could hear him breathing.

"Elena, I—" he started.

"I'll see you Saturday," I said, and hung up.

I sat on the edge of the bed in my basement apartment and looked at Haisley asleep in the corner. The room was small and cold. The ceiling leaked when it rained. But it was ours. For three years, it had been ours.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the vitamin bottle. Inside were the morphine tablets Dr. Chu had prescribed. I took one and swallowed it dry. The pain in my stomach had been building all day. It felt like something inside me was eating itself.

I lay down next to Haisley and watched her breathe.

Saturday came too fast.

I packed a single suitcase. Haisley's clothes. A few of mine. Nothing else. No photos. No keepsakes. I was not going back to build a life. I was going back to finish one.

The drive to the Hamptons took two hours. Haisley fell asleep in the backseat. I kept my hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road. The Fox estate appeared through the trees like something out of a magazine. Stone walls. Manicured hedges. A circular driveway that could fit ten cars.

Harrison was waiting at the door.

He looked the same. Tall. Broad-shouldered. That same expression he always wore when he wanted something from me—relief mixed with expectation. He smiled when I got out of the car.

"Elena," he said, stepping forward.

I walked past him into the foyer. Haisley's hand was in mine. I did not smile. I did not soften.

"Where should I put our things?" I asked.

His smile faltered. "Upstairs. I'll show you."

That evening, Delaney hosted dinner. The dining room was enormous. Crystal chandeliers. A table that could seat twenty. Delaney sat at the head. Harrison sat to her right. I sat across from him. Jaxon sat at the far end, as far from me as the table allowed.

Delaney looked at me with that thin, polite smile she had perfected over decades.

"Elena," she said. "How nice to have you back."

"Thank you," I said.

"And little Haisley. She's grown."

"Yes."

Jaxon did not look up from his plate. I tried once.

"Jaxon," I said. "How's school?"

He shrugged. "Fine."

That was it. One word. He did not meet my eyes.

I did not try again.

That night, Harrison came to the bedroom. I was already in bed, facing the wall.

"Elena," he said.

I did not turn around.

"I'm glad you're here," he continued. "I know it's been hard. But we can fix this. We can—"

"I won't be sharing your bed," I said.

Silence.

"What?"

"I'll sleep in one of the other rooms."

"Elena, we're married."

"We're separated. Legally."

"You came back."

"For Haisley. Not for you."

I heard him stand. I heard the door close.

I waited until his footsteps faded. Then I got up and went to the servant's bathroom at the end of the hall. I turned on the tap and took two morphine tablets from the vitamin bottle. The pain was worse tonight. It felt like my stomach was full of broken glass.

I gripped the sink and breathed through it. When it passed, I looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked like a ghost.

I went back to bed.

The next morning, the phone rang. Harrison answered it in the kitchen. I heard him say her name.

"Tatum."

I walked into the kitchen and held out my hand.

"Give me the phone," I said.

Harrison stared at me.

"Elena—"

"Give it to me."

He handed it over.

"Tatum," I said. "This is Elena. You should come to dinner tonight."

Silence on the other end.

"I'm sorry?" Tatum said.

"Dinner. Seven o'clock. I'll tell Harrison to set an extra place."

I hung up and handed the phone back to Harrison.

He looked at me like I had lost my mind.

"What are you doing?" he said.

"Stop pretending," I said. "Be with the woman you actually want."

I walked out of the kitchen.

Behind me, Harrison said nothing.

He did not understand yet.

He was looking at a woman who had already died.

He just did not know it.
