Chapter 1

The chandeliers at The Plaza dropped light like slow rain. I stood beside Cal in a champagne satin dress, and I could feel the ballroom watching us. The Harpers. Together again. That was the story the room wanted.

Cal didn't look at me. He looked past me, at the stage, at a waiter, at the door. When a photographer lifted a lens, he offered the smallest, flattest smile. It was the smile you gave a woman whose name you'd been reminded of ten minutes ago.

I pressed my thumb into the inside of my wrist. The old spot. The place I go when I need to keep my face still.

Wynter drifted in from his other side, like she had a magnet under her skin. Cream silk. Soft curls. A small clutch she held with both hands, the way she did everything — carefully, like the world might scold her.

"Cal," she said, so quietly I had to lean to hear. "Are you okay standing this long? I know it's still tender."

Her fingers grazed his sleeve. Rested there. Slid down to his cuff and stayed.

He nodded at her without turning. "I'm fine."

I counted the touches. Three since we'd walked in. Four now. Her knuckles brushed the back of his hand and he didn't move away. He didn't move toward me either. I was the empty chair at the table. I was a coat someone forgot in the corner.

"Can I get you a water?" I asked him. My voice sounded normal. I was proud of that.

He glanced at me. "Wynter already got me one."

Wynter smiled at the floor. Modest. Practiced. "I hope that's okay."

"Of course," I said. Thumb into wrist. Harder.

The emcee said something about generosity. The room laughed. A woman on stage lifted a glass. I remember the shape of her mouth opening for the next word.

Then the floor jumped.

No — the floor tried to leave. A white sound cracked the ceiling in half. I didn't hear the blast so much as feel it punch me sideways in the chest. Glass fell like water. People became shapes. Somewhere a man was screaming a name that wasn't mine.

My body moved before I did. I don't remember deciding. I remember Cal's shoulder under my hands and my ribs bending over his back and thinking, small and clear, cover him, cover his head.

At the exact same second, he twisted the other way. Not toward me. Away from me. His arm shot out and dragged Wynter down beneath him.

I saw it. I saw it while I was still falling.

Something huge came down on my left leg. It didn't hurt at first. It just pinned me, like a hand on a moth. Then the pain arrived in a color I had no name for. White. Then red. Then no color at all.

I stayed awake. I don't know why. I heard men counting. I heard metal being cut. I heard Cal's voice, farther away than it should have been, asking if Wynter was hurt.

A paramedic leaned into my face. Kind eyes. Blood on his chin that wasn't his.

"Ma'am, stay with me. What's your name?"

"Claire," I said. "Claire Ferguson."

"Claire, we're going to have to — the leg — we can't — amputation—"

That was the word that turned the lights off.

———

I woke to a ceiling I didn't know. Acoustic tiles. A water stain shaped like Florida. My mouth tasted like tin.

I didn't look down for a long time. I already knew. The sheet was too flat on one side. Flat in a way sheets are not supposed to be.

I looked anyway. You have to look.

Below my left knee, the blanket dropped straight to the mattress. Nothing under it. Nothing to lift it. My leg ended in the middle of the bed like a sentence someone stopped writing.

The door opened.

Cal walked in. A butterfly bandage over one eyebrow. A small cut on his jaw. Otherwise, whole. Walking. Alive. He wore the navy suit I had picked out for him two years ago, back when he still let me pick things.

He stopped at the foot of the bed. He looked at the sheet. Then at my face. Then somewhere past my ear.

"They said you were awake," he said.

I waited. I waited for my name. For his hand. For anything.

He cleared his throat. "The doctors say you're stable. That's good."

Stable. The word a man uses about a stranger's mother.

Behind him, Wynter appeared in the doorway. A soft sweater. No makeup, artfully. She put her fingertips on his elbow like she was steadying a horse.

"Cal," she whispered. "You promised you'd rest. Come on. She needs quiet."

He let her turn him. He let her walk him out. He did not look back.

The door clicked. I pressed my thumb into my wrist until I felt the bone.

———

Rehab was a long hallway that smelled like lemon cleaner and old coffee. I learned to stand on a temporary leg that wasn't mine. I learned to fall without crying out. Nurses were kind in the careful way nurses are kind to people no one is coming for.

No one came.

Mrs. Harper came once. She sat in the plastic chair by my bed in her camel coat and did not take it off. She looked at the sheet, then at the window, then at my hand on the blanket. She reached out and squeezed my fingers, just once, hard enough that I felt the ring on her thumb.

"Claire," she said. And then, softer, "I'm sorry."

She didn't say what for. She didn't have to.

When she left, the room got very quiet. I lay back and stared at the ceiling tiles and counted them. Forty-eight across. Thirty-two down. My thumb pressed into my wrist, slow, steady, like a heartbeat someone else was keeping for me.

I was beginning to understand.

He was not going to remember me.

And I was going to have to keep breathing anyway.
