Chapter 5

The cold seeped into my bones.

I sat alone in the dark warehouse, staring at the closed metal door. The nylon ropes dug into my raw skin. I didn't try to move. My husband had looked right past me and walked away with another woman. My chest felt hollowed out, like someone had carved out my heart with a dull spoon.

Then the heavy metal door blew inward.

A loud crash echoed off the concrete. The latch tore free from the brick frame. Flashlights cut through the gloom in sharp, white beams.

Men in dark tactical gear poured inside. They moved in silence, spreading out with military precision, clearing every blind corner in three seconds flat.

Behind them walked Axel Castillo.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and entirely calm. He wore a crisp dark suit beneath a heavy black wool coat. The dirt and dust of the warehouse didn't seem to touch him.

His eyes locked onto me through the shadows.

He didn't run. He didn't panic. He crossed the floor in long, measured strides and dropped to one knee before my chair.

Without a word, Axel drew a small folding blade from his pocket. A single quick flick, and the nylon cords fell away from my wrists. He took my hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and dry against my freezing skin.

He shrugged out of his heavy coat. He lifted it and draped it around my shoulders. It smelled like cedar, clean rain, and expensive wool. The warmth sank straight into my trembling chest.

He placed a hand under my elbow and helped me stand.

My knees wobbled. I shook violently. It wasn't fear. It was the full, crushing weight of Keegan’s choice settling into my bones. He had thrown me away to die.

Axel didn't say a single word. He didn't have to. His hand remained firm against my back, keeping me upright. His presence was the sentence.

He guided me out into the cool Red Hook night.

Fog rolled off the bay, thick and gray. Fifty feet away, near the streetlights, Keegan’s car sat idling.

Keegan was still there. He had his arm wrapped tight around Charli, guiding her toward the passenger side. Charli was dabbing at her dry eyes, leaning her head on his shoulder.

Then Keegan turned his head.

He saw us.

His footsteps stopped dead. His mouth fell slightly open. The color drained from his face until he looked like a ghost under the yellow streetlamp. He stared at me—alive, standing, wrapped in a coat that cost more than his car. Then his eyes drifted to Axel Castillo.

Recognition hit Keegan like a physical blow. His jaw went slack.

Axel didn't slow his pace. He walked me straight toward his black Escalade. As we passed near Keegan, Axel turned his head.

His eyes were completely black, devoid of anger, filled only with total, crushing contempt.

"She was never yours to throw away," Axel said.

His voice wasn't loud. It was low, conversational, and deadly cold.

Keegan flinched as if he had been slapped across the face. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. Charli’s grip on his arm tightened, her doe eyes wide with pure terror.

Axel didn't give them another second. A security guard held the door open, and Axel helped me into the back seat of the Escalade.

The heavy door shut with a solid thud. The world outside disappeared.

We pulled away from the curb. In the tinted side mirror, I watched Keegan and Charli shrink into two tiny, pathetic figures standing alone under the damp streetlight.

The car glided through the city in silence.

I expected Axel to take me to a private hospital, or maybe a hotel suite in Midtown. But the driver stayed on the West Side Highway, cruising north.

Twenty minutes later, the Escalade pulled up to a curb on 74th Street.

I looked out the window. My breath caught in my throat.

The stoop. The bay windows. The black wrought-iron railing with the little ivy curls where my grandmother used to rest her hands every summer evening.

The Turner family brownstone.

It was lit up with warm, amber light from the inside. The stone was scrubbed clean. The heavy oak door had a fresh coat of lacquer.

I couldn't move. My fingers gripped the leather seat.

"Axel..." My voice came out cracked and thin. "Why are we here?"

Axel stepped out of the car, walked around, and opened my door. He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a thick manila envelope.

He placed it gently into my lap.

"Three years ago," Axel said softly. "The auction was private. You needed the money to save his business. I made sure no one else could bid."

My hands shook as I pulled the papers from the envelope.

It was the deed. The original title to the Turner brownstone. At the bottom, in crisp black ink, the property had already been transferred.

*Owner: Ophelia Turner.*

"I paid the taxes," Axel continued, leaning against the open car door, his voice low and steady. "I kept the original wallpaper in the foyer. Your grandmother's reading chair is still by the bay window. The lemon tree on the terrace is blooming."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"I've been waiting for you to come home, Ophelia."

I looked from the paper to the house, then back to Axel.

He didn't want my gratitude. He didn't ask for a price. He had kept my entire world safe in the dark for three years, asking for nothing.

I stepped onto the sidewalk. My boots hit the familiar stone steps of my childhood home.

And right there, standing on the stoop, the tears finally came. Hot and fast, washing away three years of dirt and lies.

I wasn't crying from pain.

For the first time in my life, I was being seen.
