Chapter 2

The next evening, Keegan found me in the kitchen.

He didn’t look me in the eye. He rubbed the back of his neck, his fingers nervously tapping his gold watch.

"Charli wants to go to the charity gala tomorrow night," he said. His voice was too quiet, almost defensive. "As my date. On my arm."

The Moreno Group annual gala was the biggest night of his year. For three years, I had stood beside him. I had smiled for the photographers while my feet ached, playing the supportive wife so his investors felt safe.

Now, he wanted to parade his intern in front of Manhattan’s elite.

I set down my coffee mug. The ceramic clicked softly against the quartz counter.

"Three million dollars," I said.

Keegan blinked. "What?"

"You heard me," I replied, keeping my voice flat and even. "You want to humiliate me in front of the press and your board of directors. That's the price. Three million. Wire it to my private account right now, or I show up on your arm like I'm legally entitled to do."

"Ophelia, that's insane," he hissed. "Three million? That's half my liquid cash!"

"Then tell Charli she's staying home."

I picked up my mug and waited.

Keegan’s jaw clenched. One second passed. Two. Three. Four.

He pulled out his phone with a sharp curse. He typed furiously, his thumb slamming into the glass screen.

My phone chimed from the counter.

*Cha-ching.*

A wire confirmation popped up on my screen. Three million dollars, cleared instantly.

I looked at my phone, and for a second, the room tilted. I walked to my bedroom, locked the door, and opened my laptop. I typed the number into my spreadsheet. The bottom row calculated the sum.

Target reached.

For the first time in three years, I had enough. My chest felt tight and light all at once. The vertigo rushed through me, cold and sweet. I had the money to buy back my family's legacy.

Now, I just had to finish the job.

The ballroom at the Plaza was bathed in warm golden light. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, throwing sharp reflections across hundreds of silk gowns and tailored tuxedos.

Keegan was near the center of the room. Charli was glued to his side.

She wore a pale yellow silk dress with spaghetti straps. It was a replica of the dress Keegan’s college sweetheart wore in the photo he kept hidden in his desk. Charli was beaming, holding a glass of champagne, soaking in the stares.

Then the heavy double doors opened, and I walked in.

I wore an emerald green gown with a high neck and an open back. It hugged every curve and swept the marble floor. I wore no jewelry except my grandmother’s simple diamond studs. My hair was swept up, sleek and sharp.

The low hum of conversation near the entrance died down.

I didn't look at Keegan. I moved through the crowd with easy grace.

"Arthur," I said, smiling warmly at a gray-haired man. He was Keegan’s lead investor. "How is your daughter doing at Columbia? It feels like just yesterday we were sitting at my kitchen table, restructuring the company’s debt."

Arthur’s face softened. "Ophelia. You look stunning. We missed you at the opening remarks."

"Just running a little late," I said smoothly.

I moved from table to table. I greeted every board member and every major donor by their first name. With every smile and handshake, I casually dropped details from the bankruptcy years. I reminded every powerful person in that room who had kept Keegan afloat when his world was falling apart.

Across the ballroom, Keegan caught my eye.

The color drained from his face. His drink tilted in his hand, nearly spilling onto the rug. Beside him, Charli stiffened. Her bright smile froze, turning brittle and fake. Her fingers dug into Keegan's black sleeve like claws.

The master of ceremonies tapped the microphone on stage.

"And now," the speaker announced, "we move to our executive pledges."

I didn't wait. I glided toward the small stage before Keegan could even take a step. The speaker blinked in surprise, but smiled and stepped aside. Everyone knew me as Mrs. Moreno.

I took the microphone in my hand. The room fell dead silent.

"Good evening, everyone," I said, my voice echoing clearly over the speakers. I looked directly at Keegan. "Six months ago, my husband pledged a two-million-dollar gift in my name for tonight’s cause."

Keegan’s eyes went wide. He had forgotten all about it. It had been an empty promise made for tax write-offs, buried in old paperwork. But I had kept the signed pledge form in my safe.

"I am officially directing those funds tonight," I continued, smiling softly into the crowd. "Every single dollar will go directly to the Manhattan Women’s Shelter. For the women who need the courage to rebuild their lives after being cast aside."

A wave of polite applause broke out, quickly growing into a loud roar.

I lifted a champagne flute from a passing waiter's tray.

"A toast," I said, locking eyes with Charli. Her face was chalk-white now. "To knowing what things are worth. And to knowing when a man has traded solid gold for cheap plastic."

Gasps rippled through the front tables.

I took a single sip, set the flute down on the podium, and stepped off the stage.

I didn't look back. I walked down the center aisle, my chin high, the applause still ringing behind me.

"Ophelia! Stop!"

Keegan’s voice came from behind me in the lobby. He broke into a run, his polished shoes squeaking on the marble. He shoved past a cluster of shocked executives.

"Ophelia, what the hell was that?" he shouted, his face red with rage and panic. "You took my money! You swore you wouldn't come!"

I stepped into the waiting elevator and turned around.

"I said Charli could be your date," I said, my voice steady as ice. "I never said I wouldn't come to collect."

Keegan lunged forward, reaching an arm out to catch the metal door. "Wait—"

I pressed the button for the ground floor.

The heavy brass doors slid shut, cutting him off completely.
