Chapter 2

The debit card Ruthie had left sat on the scarred laminate table like a loaded gun. Three hundred thousand dollars. It was enough to rent a doorman building in the Village, to buy high-thread-count sheets, to sleep for a year. But I didn’t want sleep. I wanted war.

I left the apartment before the sun hit the pavement, heading straight for the Garment District. I bypassed the plush showrooms where I used to sip espresso while sales associates fawned over my credit limit. Instead, I dove into the wholesalers, the dusty caverns that smelled of sizing and machine oil. My fingers, stripped of their diamond rings, grazed over bolts of Italian wool and heavy silk charmeuse. I needed structure. I needed weight.

I bought five yards of midnight blue crepe and a lining the color of a fresh bruise. Back in the studio apartment, the radiator clanking a discordant rhythm, I set up a second-hand Juki sewing machine. The hum of the needle became a chant. I wasn’t just sewing a suit; I was stitching a spine. I worked for three days, barely eating, pinning the fabric directly onto my own body until the fit was surgical. Sharp lapels. A cinched waist that offered no apology.

Then, the bathroom mirror. The woman staring back was too soft. Too Logan.

I picked up the kitchen shears. The metal was cold against my neck. *Snip.* Long, honey-blonde waves—Logan’s favorite feature, the ones he loved to wind around his fist—fell into the rusted sink. I didn’t stop until my hair was a sharp, architectural bob that framed my jaw like a helmet. I applied crimson lipstick, a shade darker than blood. The trophy wife was dead.

I needed allies, or at least, I needed a way in. I called Diana Blackwood. She agreed to meet at Le Coucou, likely out of morbid curiosity rather than friendship.

I walked in wearing my new armor. The maître d’ hesitated, not recognizing the woman with the jagged hair and the predatory stride, but he led me to the corner table. Diana didn’t stand. She was dissecting a scallop with the precision of a surgeon, her pearls gleaming in the ambient light.

"You look... different," she said, her eyes raking over my suit. It wasn't a compliment.

"I need a contact at LVMH, Diana," I said, skipping the pleasantries. I reached for the water glass, my hand steady. "Or the buyer at Bergdorf’s. I’m launching a capsule collection."

Diana laughed, a brittle, tinkling sound that drew stares. She leaned in, the scent of expensive gin wafting across the table. "Oh, Bella. You really don't know, do you?"

"Know what?"

"Logan told everyone." She lowered her voice, feigning intimacy. "The breakdown. The manic episodes. He said he tried to get you help for years, but you were... unstable. And the affair with the tennis pro? Tacky, darling."

My blood ran cold, then hot. "There was no affair. And I am perfectly sane."

"Perception is reality in this town," she said, signaling for the check without looking at me. "You’re radioactive, Isabella. No one will touch you. Go to Jersey. Find a nice dentist. Fashion is for the sharks, and you’re bleeding in the water."

I stood up, the chair scraping harsh against the floor. "Then I’ll learn to bite back."

Diana was right about one thing: the old gates were barred. I had to break down a new door.

*Velvet & Steel*. They were the antithesis of Logan’s world—gritty, avant-garde, rising fast in SoHo. I knew their Creative Director, Marcus Chen, was brilliant but disorganized. I spent three days stalking the lobby of their headquarters, learning the rhythm of the building, waiting for a gap in the security detail.

On Thursday morning, the gap appeared. Marcus stormed through the revolving doors, looking exhausted, clutching a mannequin torso draped in a camel trench coat that just wouldn't hang right. He was arguing with someone on his headset, marching toward the elevator.

I slipped in behind him just as the steel doors slid shut.

Silence, heavy and thick. He groaned, ripping the headset off and glaring at the coat’s collar. "Disaster."

"It’s the shoulder seam," I said. My voice didn't shake. It echoed in the small metal box.

He looked at me, really looked at me, for the first time. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles bruising the skin beneath them. "Excuse me?"

"The drop shoulder," I said, stepping into his personal space. I reached out, pinching the fabric where it bunched near the clavicle. "It’s fighting the grain of the wool. You’re trying to force a structural drape on a bias cut. You need a raglan sleeve, or you need to interface the yoke to support the weight."

I pulled a small sketchbook from my bag—my weapon of choice—and ripped out the page I’d drawn while waiting in the lobby. I shoved it at him.

He stared at the sketch, his brow furrowing. He looked at the coat, tracing the line I had pointed out, then back at me. The elevator dinged at the top floor. The doors opened to a chaotic loft buzzing with frantic assistants.

"Who are you?" he asked, his eyes narrowing, calculating.

"Isabella King," I said, squaring my shoulders in my midnight blue armor. "And I can fix your entire fall line before lunch."

He hesitated, his foot caught between the elevator and the hallway. He looked at the sketch one more time, then jerked his head toward the studio.

"You have ten minutes," he snapped. "Don't bore me."
