Chapter 4

The projector hummed in the boardroom. Dawson stood at the head of the long mahogany table, looking sharp in his tailored navy suit. He clicked to the next slide with a smooth flick of his wrist.

The title read: *Phase Two: Streamlined Executive Leadership.*

Dawson touched his left cufflink—his unconscious tell whenever he lied. Then he flashed his warm, practiced smile.

"We all know what Alina has endured over the past year," he said softly. His eyes swept across the room and settled on me with tender concern. "Losing Richard was devastating for this company. But it was even harder on his daughter. She shouldn’t have to carry this crushing burden alone."

He turned back toward the screen. The diagram laid it out plainly: full operational control shifting directly into his hands.

"This restructuring consolidates daily management under my office," Dawson explained. "It protects Alina from unnecessary stress. It gives her space to heal, while ensuring Carpenter Industries remains steady."

A murmur of agreement ran through the room. Mr. Hayes and two other senior members nodded right away. Hayes even smiled at Dawson like an admiring uncle. They had bought every word.

I looked across the table at Sandra Lee.

She was my father’s oldest ally on the board. Sandra sat with her back straight, her arms folded over her chest. Her face was set in stone. She didn't nod. She didn't smile. She just watched Dawson through narrow, cold eyes.

I didn't say a single word. I kept my head down, holding a pen over my father’s old leather notebook, pretending to scribble harmless notes.

When Dawson called for an informal show of support, four members raised their hands. I slid my phone out just beneath the mahogany lip of the table. With two silent taps, I took photos of the raised hands and the faces attached to them. I needed to know exactly who stood with him when the hammer fell.

Dawson felt the shift in me that week.

I was too quiet. Too agreeable. In the past, I would have argued about company decisions. Now, I simply nodded. The silence made him uneasy. He liked having an emotional target he could manipulate. Without one, he grew clumsy.

So he started pushing harder at home.

"Alina, did you leave the back door unlocked again?" he asked on Tuesday night, walking into the kitchen with a heavy sigh.

"I locked it at six, Dawson," I said evenly, wiping down the counter.

He shook his head, looking down at me with fake sadness. "No, you didn't. You’ve been so forgetful lately, honey. Honestly, it's worrying."

Two nights later, we hosted a dinner party for several high-profile acquaintances. The dining room was warm, filled with candlelight and the clink of crystal glasses. Over dessert, Dawson leaned closer to our guests, lowering his voice into a confidential whisper.

"She’s just been so fragile," he murmured, glancing across the table at me with a tragic expression. "Ever since the miscarriage three years ago... she’s never really come back to us. Some days, I genuinely worry about her grip on reality."

Mrs. Harrison gasped softly. She set her fork down and looked at me with pitying eyes.

My hands stayed relaxed in my lap. My heart didn't race. I lifted my wine glass, met Dawson’s gaze straight on, and smiled pleasantly.

"Would you like more wine, Dawson?" I asked, my voice light and clear.

His smile faltered for half a second. A flicker of doubt crossed his eyes.

Later that night, while the shower ran in the master bathroom, I opened my laptop. I pulled up the encrypted timeline document Victor had asked me to maintain. I logged the date, the names of every guest at the table, and Dawson’s exact words: *Fragile. Grip on reality.*

He was building a narrative to make me look insane.

I was building a record that would put him behind bars.

The next afternoon, the heavy oak door of my office swung open without a knock.

"Surprise, babe!" Kaeli sang out.

She strutted in wearing a fitted knit dress that clearly showed off her small bump. She didn't wait for an invitation. She kicked off her designer heels, tossed her purse on my desk, and sprawled across my leather sofa.

She rested one hand over her stomach, smoothing the fabric over and over.

"I was just downstairs having lunch with Dawson," she said, glancing around my corner office with hungry eyes. "He practically runs this entire place now anyway. It's crazy how much work he takes off your plate."

I sat behind my father’s desk, my pen resting between my fingers. "Does he?"

"Totally. And honestly, Alina? You look completely drained." Kaeli brushed a strand of dark hair behind her ear.

The silver links on her wrist caught the afternoon sun.

It was a Tiffany bracelet. I had bought it for her four years ago, during the worst winter of her life. She had slept on my couch for three months, hiding from a violent ex-boyfriend who was stalking her. I had paid off her debts. I had covered her rent. I had held her while she sobbed into my shoulder.

Now she wore it while carrying my husband's child.

"You should really step back," Kaeli said, her voice dripping with sweet, poisonous concern. "Let Dawson take the wheel. You've been through so much trauma, babe. You just need to focus on yourself for once."

I looked at the silver bracelet on her wrist. Then I looked up into her smiling face.

"You're right, Kaeli," I said softly. My voice was calm and steady. "I should focus on myself."

Kaeli beamed, soaking in what she thought was another small victory.

She had no idea what was coming.
