Chapter 1

The morning after Valentine's Day, I stood in our marble bathroom, Dawson's charcoal overcoat draped over my arm. The dry cleaner had called to remind me about their extended holiday hours, and I needed to drop it off before my afternoon meeting at Carpenter Industries.

My fingers brushed the inner pocket, feeling something crumpled and foreign. I pulled out a receipt, its edges softened from being crushed and smoothed flat again. The paper was expensive, heavy stock with embossed lettering: "Le Ciel, West Village."

My breath caught. Le Ciel was the Michelin-starred French restaurant that had been profiled in last month's Vogue. I'd mentioned wanting to try it for our anniversary next month.

The receipt was for a couples' prix fixe dinner for two. $320 plus a $120 bottle of Bordeaux. Dated February 14th. Valentine's Day. The night Dawson had kissed my forehead at 5 PM, his eyes filled with practiced sorrow as he told me he needed to drive upstate to visit his parents' graves.

"I should be back by midnight," he'd said, squeezing my hand. "You understand, right? Some traditions are important."

I'd nodded, of course I understood. I always understood.

My hands trembled now as I read the itemized charges. Two lobster thermidors. Two chocolate soufflés. The receipt was signed with flourish – not Dawson's signature, but someone's. Someone who'd been there with him while I sat alone in our penthouse, watching rom-coms and eating takeout from the Thai place downstairs.

I folded the receipt carefully, my movements mechanical. There had to be an explanation. Dawson was many things – ambitious, sometimes distant, always concerned with appearances – but he wouldn't lie about something like this. Would he?

Something cold and precise clicked into place behind my ribs. Not quite anger, not quite grief. Something harder.

---

That night, I couldn't sleep. Dawson's steady breathing beside me felt like a mockery. At 2 AM, I slipped out of bed and padded to the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I sat on the cool tile floor and opened Instagram.

Kaeli's profile appeared at the top of my feed. My best friend since college. The woman I'd rescued from debt, from homelessness, from an abusive ex who'd stalked her for months. The woman who called me her sister, her rock, her person.

I scrolled through her stories. And there it was.

A photo of Le Ciel's signature dessert – a chocolate rose on a black plate, petals dusted with gold. The same dessert listed on the receipt. Posted the previous night with a single heart emoji. No caption. The timestamp read 9:47 PM.

Exactly forty-three minutes after Dawson had texted me: "On my way back from upstate. Traffic is terrible. Don't wait up."

My phone burned in my hand. I screenshot the story, my thumb shaking slightly as I pressed the button. Then I stood, walked to my closet, and retrieved the small fireproof box where I kept important documents. I sealed the receipt inside, next to my mother's gold band and my father's business notebook.

I made a decision as I closed the box. I wouldn't confront anyone. Not yet. I would watch. I would wait. I would gather what I needed.

---

The following Saturday, I told Dawson I was meeting a client for brunch. Instead, I followed him into SoHo, keeping a careful distance. He moved with purpose, checking his phone occasionally, smiling at messages I couldn't see.

He stopped outside a nail salon with pink neon lettering. I recognized it – Kaeli had mentioned getting her nails done here. "They do these amazing gel designs," she'd told me last month. "You should try it sometime."

I crossed the street and positioned myself behind a boutique display rack, angling for a clear view through the salon's plate-glass window.

Dawson entered, and moments later, Kaeli appeared from the back. She wore a red dress I'd never seen before, her dark hair loose around her shoulders. She smiled – that warm, intimate smile I'd seen a thousand times directed at me.

Dawson pulled out her chair. He took her hand across the small table, his thumb tracing circles on her palm. They leaned close, whispering, laughing. Kaeli's manicurist worked silently, painting delicate designs on her nails while my husband and my best friend existed in a bubble of intimacy I hadn't known was possible between them.

I raised my phone and began to photograph. One image. Two. Three. Eleven in total, each one more damning than the last. I captured their hands intertwined, their foreheads touching, the casual way Kaeli tucked a strand of hair behind her ear – a gesture I'd seen her make a hundred times, but never directed at my husband.

When Dawson glanced toward the window, I didn't flinch. I lowered my phone, slipped it into my purse, and walked away. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my steps were steady.

---

That night, after Dawson fell asleep, I moved silently through our darkened apartment to his home office. I'd never entered without permission before – it had been our unspoken agreement that his work space was private. But tonight, I needed to know.

I found financial statements hidden beneath a false bottom in his desk drawer. Transfer records showing systematic movement of Carpenter Industries funds into offshore accounts. Expense reports with fabricated business dinners and nonexistent travel. Tax documents with numbers that didn't match the company's official filings.

I photographed every page, my hands surprisingly steady despite the earthquake happening inside my chest. I replaced each document exactly as I'd found it, erasing all evidence of my presence.

Back in our bedroom, I slid into bed beside my husband. He didn't stir. I lay rigid in the darkness, staring at the ceiling until dawn broke, my mind racing with the implications of what I'd discovered.

This wasn't just betrayal. This was calculated. Systematic. Planned.

And I was just beginning to understand how deep the deception went.
