Chapter 2

I set the tray down.

Not dropped it. Not slammed it. I set it down on the nearest table, slow and even, like I was defusing something. The champagne flutes rattled once and went still.

Azalea was still smiling. Still waiting for me to cry, or apologize, or shrink the way I always had.

"Enjoy the night," I said. My voice came out calm. Quiet enough that only the people closest to us could hear it, which was exactly enough. "It's the last one you'll have like this."

Her smile flickered. Just for a second. Then she laughed, a bright brittle sound, and looked around for backup. "Wow. Okay. Someone's had a rough night."

I didn't answer her. I was already turning.

Dante had come up behind her, drawn by the sudden hush in that corner of the room the way sharks come to blood. His jaw was tight. His eyes flicked to the wet shirt clinging to my chest, to the gold catering logo, to the small crowd that had started to notice.

"Livia." Low. Warning. "Don't do this here."

"I'm filing for divorce," I said.

I said it the way you'd read a grocery list. No shake in it. No tears. I watched it land on his face — the confusion first, like he genuinely couldn't process the words in this setting, and then something colder underneath, already calculating what it would cost him.

"You're not thinking straight," he said. "We'll talk about this at home."

"We're not going to."

I turned and walked. Past the ice sculpture shaped like the Apex logo. Past Rowan Hale, who was watching me with an expression I didn't have time to read. Past Briggs at the door, who didn't try to stop me this time.

The elevator doors closed on Dante's face still frozen mid-sentence.

Outside, Manhattan had opened up into a full storm. Rain came down in sheets, hard enough to sting, turning the street into a river of taxi lights and reflected neon. I stood on the sidewalk in a soaked catering uniform and let it hit me.

I thought I'd cry. I'd been braced for it the whole ride down, some part of me waiting for the floor to finally give way.

It didn't come.

Instead my hand found the retractable pen clipped inside my jacket pocket — an old habit, a stupid grad-school tic I'd never managed to shake. I clicked it. Once. Twice. Three times.

The small mechanical sound, steady under the roar of the rain, did something to my chest. Slowed it down. Gave it a rhythm to hold onto instead of falling apart.

I flagged a cab. The driver took one look at me — dripping, shivering, dressed like I'd fled a restaurant fire — and didn't ask questions. "Brooklyn," I said. "Just drive."

The city blurred past the window, streaked gold and red through rain-washed glass. I watched it without really seeing it. My mind had already moved somewhere else, somewhere colder and more useful than grief.

Eight years. Eight years of late nights at the kitchen table with my laptop open after Dante had gone to bed, telling myself I was just helping. Eight years of timestamped commits under his username because it was easier, because he asked, because I loved him and love meant not needing the credit.

I started counting.

The original notebook, still in the drawer of my desk at home, filled with the algorithm in my own handwriting before Apex Digital ever had a name. The email thread with the lead investor where I'd walked Dante through the architecture line by line, disguised as "notes for your pitch." The server logs. The Git history, if he hadn't been stupid enough to scrub it — and Dante was many things, but he'd never once cared enough about my work to think it needed hiding.

By the time the cab crossed the bridge, I wasn't shaking from the cold anymore.

The hotel was a modest place near Fort Greene, the kind with a lobby that smelled like coffee and old carpet. I paid cash. I didn't want a card statement with my name on it showing up anywhere near tonight.

In the room, I peeled off the wet uniform and left it in a heap by the bathroom door, a small ruined flag of everything that had just ended. I put on the hotel robe, sat cross-legged on the bed, and opened my laptop.

The glow of the screen lit up the dark room.

I started a new folder. Named it something boring, something no one would look at twice. Then I began pulling files — years of them, scattered across drives and old accounts and a Stanford notebook I'd never once considered evidence, only memory.

Timestamped drafts of the core algorithm, going back further than the company itself. Emails where I'd fixed critical bugs at 2 a.m., cc'd to no one, credited to no one. Expense receipts I'd kept out of habit, not suspicion, filed the way an engineer files everything — meticulously, exactly, just in case.

I hadn't been building a case. I'd just been doing the work.

But sitting there at midnight, rain still ticking against the window, I understood for the first time what eight years of quiet documentation actually was.

It was a weapon. I'd built it without even knowing.

I clicked the pen once more, out of habit, and started organizing.
