Chapter 2

The pills were blue. Small and round. Dr. Holt handed them to me twice a day with a paper cup of water and a smile that never reached her eyes.

"This will help with the anxiety, Mrs. Cole."

I swallowed them. I smiled back. I said thank you.

At night, I spit them into the toilet.

The facility had cream-colored walls. Soft lighting. Furniture with rounded edges. Everything designed to feel safe. Everything designed to make you forget you couldn't leave.

I had a room on the second floor. Window overlooking the garden. No lock on the door. They called it a suite. They called the orderlies wellness attendants. They called the bars on the windows architectural accents.

I spent three months counting ceiling tiles. Twelve across. Sixteen deep. One hundred ninety-two total. I rehearsed ballet sequences in my head. Tendu, dégagé, rond de jambe. I moved through entire performances without moving at all.

And every night, after they checked on me and turned out the lights, I pulled the photograph from the lining of my wallet.

Finley. Hours old. Eyes closed. Wrapped in a hospital blanket with his name written in marker on the corner. I'd taken it with a disposable camera I'd hidden in my hospital bag. One photo. Thirty seconds. Then the nurses came back and told me he was gone.

I pressed my thumb against his tiny face until I could feel the texture of the paper. Until I could prove he was real.

They searched my room twice. They never found it.

Dr. Holt called me into her office every Tuesday. She sat behind a mahogany desk with my file open in front of her. She asked careful questions. She took careful notes.

"Tell me about the boy you saw in the courtyard."

"I was confused," I said. "I'd been under a lot of stress."

"And now?"

"Now I understand I was mistaken."

She smiled. She wrote something down. She told me I was making excellent progress.

Rylan visited once. He brought flowers. White roses. He sat in the chair across from my bed and asked how I was feeling.

"Better," I said. "Thank you for getting me help."

He looked relieved. He touched my hand. He told me we'd get through this together.

I looked at his face and felt nothing.

On the day they released me, Dr. Holt walked me to the entrance herself. She put her hand on my shoulder. She told me to keep taking my medication. She told me to call if I needed anything.

I thanked her. I got into the car Rylan sent. I watched the facility disappear in the side mirror.

I never looked back.

The Cole estate looked exactly the same. Same marble floors. Same crystal chandeliers. Same portraits of dead relatives staring down from the walls.

Rylan was waiting in the foyer. He kissed my forehead. He told me he'd missed me. He told me everything was going to be fine now.

I smiled. I nodded. I let him lead me upstairs.

He stopped at a door I'd never used before. Guest suite. East wing. Far from the master bedroom. Far from everything.

"I thought you'd be more comfortable here," he said. "Quieter. More space to recover."

He opened the door. My clothes were already hanging in the closet. My books on the shelf. My jewelry box on the dresser.

Everything moved. Nothing asked.

"Thank you," I said. "It's perfect."

He left me alone to rest.

I sat on the edge of the bed. I looked around the room. Cream walls. Soft lighting. Furniture with rounded edges.

Just like the facility.

That night, I went down to dinner. Demi was sitting at the head of the table. My seat. She wore a silk blouse. Pearl earrings. She smiled when she saw me.

"Selene. You look well."

"Thank you."

Rylan sat beside her. I sat at the far end. A staff member I'd known for six years served my plate without meeting my eyes.

Demi talked about Finley's day. His reading progress. His piano lesson. The new shoes he needed.

Rylan listened. He nodded. He asked questions.

I ate quietly. I counted the seconds between bites. I rehearsed sequences in my head.

After dinner, I went back to my room. I pulled out the burner phone I'd bought three days after my release. Cash. No name. Purchased at a bodega on Fifth Avenue while Rylan thought I was at a therapy appointment.

I called the number I'd memorized.

"Law offices."

"I need to file for divorce," I said. "Quietly. Quickly. And I need it ironclad."

The lawyer's voice was calm. Professional. "I'll need a retainer."

"I have jewelry," I said. "Designer pieces. Six years' worth. I'll send you the list."

"That'll work."

I hung up. I deleted the call log. I hid the phone inside the lining of my winter coat.

Then I lay down on the bed in my new room. My guest suite. My exile.

I stared at the ceiling. Twelve across. Sixteen deep.

One hundred ninety-two tiles.

I could wait.
