Chapter 2

Ryan came home at noon.

I heard his key in the lock and didn't move from the kitchen table. I had a cup of coffee in front of me that had gone cold an hour ago. I kept my hands wrapped around it anyway.

He set his keys on the counter. Didn't look at me right away. He opened the refrigerator, closed it, then turned around and leaned against the counter with his arms crossed — the posture he used when he'd already decided how a conversation was going to go.

"We need to talk," he said.

"Okay."

He took a breath. "The boy needs a father. I'm not going to pretend he doesn't exist. That's not who I am."

I looked at him. I didn't say anything.

"I know this is hard for you," he continued. "I'm not saying it isn't. But you have to be reasonable about this. He's a child. He didn't ask for any of this situation."

The child. His son. The baby he'd been holding in that hospital room like he'd been waiting his whole life for the moment.

"I'm being very reasonable," I said.

Something flickered across his face. He'd expected tears, maybe. Or anger. He knew how to handle both of those. He didn't quite know what to do with this.

"I'm going to be in his life," Ryan said. "That's not negotiable. What I'm asking is for you to understand that this doesn't change what we are."

I almost laughed. I pressed my palm flat against my stomach instead.

He never apologized. Not once in the next forty minutes. He talked about Demi's son's welfare, about responsibility, about what kind of man he was. He talked about the future like it was a project he was managing and I was a stakeholder he needed to bring on board. He never said *I'm sorry I lied to you for two years.* He never said *I'm sorry I left you alone on that path in the dark.* He never said *I'm sorry* at all.

I sat there and I listened and I kept my face very still.

---

He brought it up three days later, over dinner.

"There's going to be a one-month celebration," he said. "For the baby. It's a significant thing. People will be there — family, colleagues." He cut his food without looking up. "It would be better if things were clean on paper. For your sake as much as anything."

I set down my fork. "What does that mean?"

"A temporary arrangement. Just on paper." He said it the way you'd say *just a formality.* "A separation, technically. So I can acknowledge the boy publicly without it looking — complicated. Once things settle down, we revisit it."

I stared at him.

He finally looked up. "It protects your reputation. You wouldn't be the wife in the middle of a scandal. You'd just be — separate. Temporarily."

Under the table, my phone was already in my hand. I'd had Claire Sutton's number saved for four days. I opened our text thread and typed without looking down: *He's asking for a paper divorce. Temporary, he says. Can you make it permanent and binding without him knowing?*

Three dots appeared almost immediately. Then: *Yes. I'll have the paperwork ready tomorrow. Make sure he signs all pages. Don't let him rush through it.*

I put the phone face-down on my thigh.

"Okay," I said.

Ryan blinked. He'd been braced for a fight. "Okay?"

"If you think it's the right thing." I picked up my fork again. "I trust your judgment."

He looked at me for a moment longer than was comfortable. Then he nodded and went back to his food.

I ate the rest of my dinner and didn't taste any of it.

---

He signed on a Thursday afternoon.

Claire had sent the documents through a courier, sealed, with a cover note that said *standard separation agreement* in the subject line. Ryan sat at the kitchen table with a pen and flipped to the signature page without reading past the first paragraph. I watched him sign his name in that quick, decisive way he had — the signature of a man who didn't doubt his own decisions.

He didn't read page four, where Claire had inserted the clause that made it irrevocable under state law. He didn't read page seven, where the asset division was outlined in full. He didn't read the last page at all.

He capped the pen and slid the folder back across the table.

"I'll have my lawyer file it," he said.

"Of course," I said.

I picked up the folder. Under the table, my hand was completely steady.

---

Demi arrived on a Saturday.

I was in the living room when Ryan opened the front door. She came in with her son in a carrier against her chest, a diaper bag over one shoulder, and two rolling suitcases behind her. She looked around the house with the careful, measuring look of someone taking inventory.

"Just until things are more settled," Ryan said to me, not quite meeting my eyes. "It makes more sense logistically."

I nodded.

I watched her set the diaper bag on my kitchen counter. I watched Ryan take one of the suitcases down the hall. I stood in the middle of my own living room and I pressed my palm flat against my stomach and I breathed.

By Monday, there was a bouncy seat in the corner of the living room. By Tuesday, a drying rack of small onesies in the hallway. By Wednesday, formula cans on the kitchen shelf where I kept my prenatal vitamins.

Each time, Ryan had a reason. *It's just easier. It's just temporary. You understand.*

I took photographs of all of it. Quietly, methodically, the way Claire had told me to. Date and time stamps on every one.

Demi watched me from across the room sometimes. She never said anything directly. She just watched, with that small, patient smile, like a woman who had already won and was simply waiting for me to figure it out.

I smiled back.

She didn't know that the papers Ryan had signed were already filed. She didn't know that *temporary* was a word that had stopped applying the moment his pen left the page.

I pressed my hand against my stomach. The baby shifted, slow and certain.

"Not long now," I whispered.

I wasn't sure if I meant the pregnancy or something else entirely.
